Summoner of Nightmares

Chapter 31: The Caretaker’s Quiet World

  • Next Chapter

The Caretaker did not speak.

He did not need to.

Words were indeed useful things.

They can sooth, they can clarify misunderstandings, and they can even explain complex concepts.

Mother Sarah used them to teach.

Victor used them to ramble on rather enthusiastically about science.

Morrigan used them to transform vile threats into elegant warnings.

Lilith used them to declare war over her missing cookies.

The Caretaker preferred simpler methods.

A tilt of the head.

A slow turn.

A knife resting meaningfully against his shoulder.

The sudden realization, on the part of others, that they were in terrible danger.

It was a language all its own.

And while most people found that language deeply unsettling, the Caretaker found it efficient.

The Nightmare Grand Hotel was his home.

Its endless halls, flickering lights, and whispering shadows were comfortable in ways he could never properly explain.

The hotel breathed around him like a living creature.

Every creak of the floorboards and every draft through the corridors was familiar.

He knew every room.

Every passage.

Every shadow.

And every member of the strange family that had claimed him as one of their own.

He guarded them all.

Even when they realized it.

But, usually he did it when they did not realize danger was afoot.

⸻

Morning Patrol

The Caretaker began each day before anyone else.

The hotel existed in perpetual twilight, but he knew when the household slept deepest and when the first stirrings of life began.

He moved through the halls with his usual silent purpose.

The kitchen.

The lobby.

The children’s floor.

The laboratories.

He checked doors.

Adjusted portraits that had shifted overnight.

Removed a skeletal raven that had attempted to build a nest inside a chandelier.

The raven squawked indignantly.

The Caretaker stared.

The bird lowered its head and flew away.

Acceptable.

At least until he has Victor take care of it.

He passed the playroom.

Lilith slept curled on a mountain of cushions, her silver hair spread across the pillow, stuffed rabbit clutched against her chest.

The Caretaker stood in the doorway for several moments.

He listened to her breathing.

Steady.

Peacefully resting.

Satisfied, he blended back into the shadows and moved on.

⸻

Hank Dorsey and the Hidden Dangers

Hank Dorsey was the hotel’s security guard.

He was a middle-aged NPC with thinning hair, sensible shoes, and a remarkable ability to accept the impossible.

When Gene had first created him, Hank had been intended as a practical employee.

What Gene had accidentally created was a man whose greatest strength was his complete refusal to panic.

This trait made him uniquely qualified to work in a haunted hotel.

Hank routinely encountered:

• Ghosts in the mirrors.

• Skeleton birds in the rafters.

• A child queen commanding stitched monsters.

• Victor testing “mostly harmless” inventions.

• The Caretaker appearing behind him without warning.

Hank had long since adopted a simple philosophy.

If it was not actively trying to kill him, it was probably just another Tuesday.

The Caretaker respected that.

Which was fortunate.

Because Hank needed constant protection.

⸻

The Tentacle Incident

At precisely 2:14 a.m., Hank made his usual rounds through the lower storage corridor.

He carried a flashlight and a cup of coffee.

He hummed softly to himself.

Behind him, one of Victor and Morrigan’s containment seals flickered.

A crack opened in the air.

A rubbery tentacle began to emerge.

The creature was technically harmless.

Technically.

Its primary defense mechanism involved wrapping around unsuspecting victims and covering them in sticky luminescent mucus.

Hank remained blissfully unaware.

The Caretaker, standing in the shadows at the end of the hall, observed the situation.

He stepped forward.

The tentacle froze.

The Caretaker raised his knife.

The tentacle reconsidered its life choices and withdrew immediately.

The dimensional crack snapped shut.

Hank turned at the sound.

The Caretaker stood motionless ten feet away.

Hank sighed.

“Morning, boss.”

The Caretaker inclined his head.

Hank nodded and continued walking.

Crisis resolved.

⸻

The Hallway Scare

The Caretaker did not intentionally scare Hank.

Not usually.

Unfortunately, he was very good at standing silently in dark corners.

Later that morning, Hank rounded a corner and nearly walked face-first into the masked giant.

Coffee splashed everywhere.

Hank clutched his chest.

“Sweet mercy.”

The Caretaker stared.

Hank breathed heavily for a few moments.

Then pointed a finger.

“One of these days, you’re going to put me in an early grave.”

The Caretaker tilted his head.

Hank narrowed his eyes.

“You think that’s funny.”

The Caretaker did not move.

Hank sighed.

“Yeah. Probably.”

He walked off muttering about hazard pay.

The Caretaker watched him go.

If he had been capable of smiling, he might have.

⸻

Lilith’s Summons

The emotional bond between the Caretaker and Lilith was strong enough that he could often sense when she wanted him.

This particular summons arrived during midmorning.

A feeling of excitement.

A pulse of affection.

And a clear mental image of a tiny teacup.

The Caretaker changed direction immediately.

He entered the playroom to find Lilith seated at a small table surrounded by dolls, stuffed animals, and several patient NPC children.

A lace tablecloth covered the toy table.

Tiny porcelain cups had been arranged with alarming precision.

Lilith beamed.

“Mister Caretaker!”

She pointed to an empty chair far too small for him.

“You’re late.”

The Caretaker stood motionless for a moment.

The chair creaked ominously under his weight when he sat.

Lilith poured imaginary tea.

The Caretaker accepted the delicate cup between two gloved fingers.

Lilith nodded approvingly.

“Very good manners.”

One of the younger children stared at him with wide eyes.

“Is he going to drink it?”

Lilith looked scandalized.

“Of course he is.”

The Caretaker lifted the cup to his mask.

There was a brief pause.

Then he tilted the cup back.

Lilith clapped.

The children cheered.

Tea parties were serious business of course.

⸻

A Royal Protector

After tea, Lilith insisted on introducing Fluffy to several dolls.

The three-headed dire wolf lay on the floor, each head wearing a different ribbon.

The Caretaker stood nearby while Lilith narrated elaborate adventures involving princesses, monsters, and suspiciously villainous cookies.

At one point, Lilith climbed into his lap.

He adjusted automatically, ensuring she was secure.

She leaned against his chest and looked up at his mask.

“Do you like our tea parties?”

The Caretaker tilted his head.

Lilith considered this.

“That usually means yes.”

She patted his arm.

“I like spending time with you too.”

The Caretaker patted one large hand gently on her back.

Lilith smiled and returned to her game.

The Caretaker remained watching ever vigilant.

For a being born from horror and violence, these quiet moments were strangely precious to him.

⸻

The Scientists’ Experiment

The laboratories were never entirely safe.

Victor and Morrigan tried their best, but “best” was a relative term when one spouse animated corpses and the other believed electricity improved nearly everything.

During his afternoon patrol, the Caretaker entered to find Victor adjusting a metal collar on a skeletal hound.

Morrigan made notes nearby.

Victor brightened.

“Perfect timing!”

The Caretaker stopped.

That sentence rarely led to positive outcomes.

Victor gestured excitedly.

“We’ve developed a prototype translation device!”

Morrigan smiled.

“It should allow certain nonverbal summons to communicate through text projection.”

The Caretaker considered this.

Victor held up the collar.

“Would you like to test it?”

The Caretaker stared.

Victor lowered the device.

“I’ll take that as a no.”

Morrigan patted her husband’s arm.

“Perhaps later.”

The Caretaker nodded once and continued on his way.

He did not dislike the idea.

He simply preferred the mysterious answers he left people with.

⸻

The Mirror Monster

That evening, Hank carried fresh linens toward the guest wing.

He whistled off-key.

He passed a decorative mirror.

A pale hand began reaching out from the glass.

The Caretaker appeared beside the mirror.

The hand withdrew instantly.

The surface returned to normal.

Hank paused.

He looked at the mirror.

Then at the Caretaker staring at the mirror.

Then back at the mirror.

He shrugged, usually he is saved by him.

“Thanks?! I am sure you stopped me dying somehow.”

The Caretaker inclined his head.

Hank continued on.

The Caretaker remained behind long enough to glare at the mirror.

No further hands will be emerging tonight.

⸻

Dinner with Family

At dinner, the Caretaker stood in his usual place behind Lilith’s chair.

Gene discussed expansion plans.

Selene laughed at one of Victor’s stories.

Mother Sarah corrected arithmetic homework between bites.

Lilith secretly attempted to feed Fluffy vegetables under the table.

The Caretaker intercepted a falling carrot before it hit the floor.

Lilith looked up.

“Thank you.”

She offered him one of her dinner rolls.

The Caretaker accepted.

Gene noticed and smiled.

Selene covered her mouth to hide a grin.

The Caretaker was unconcerned.

He was secure enough in his image as an unstoppable nightmare to accept baked goods from a child.

⸻

Night Watch

As the hotel settled into silence, the Caretaker resumed his rounds.

He checked on the children.

Observed Mother Sarah grading papers in the academy.

Passed Victor and Morrigan asleep over shared notes in the laboratory.

Ensured Gene’s study lights were extinguished.

Finally, he returned to the balcony outside Lilith’s room.

She slept peacefully beneath a mountain of blankets.

The silver charm he had given her rested on the bedside table.

The Caretaker stood watch.

The eternal twilight bathed the grounds in violet light.

The Nightmare Grand Hotel and Midnight Academy rose together against the horizon.

A home.

A school.

A family.

The Caretaker had once existed only to kill.

To stalk.

To punish.

Now he guarded.

Protected.

Belonged.

Inside the room, Lilith stirred in her sleep.

“G’Night Mister Caretaker,” she murmured softly.

The Caretaker turned toward her.

Lilith smiled without waking and hugged her stuffed rabbit tighter.

The Caretaker resumed his vigil.

Silently waiting.

And utterly content.
