Summoner of Nightmares

Chapter 32: Jesse Belle

  • Next Chapter

Gene Gingerline had discovered that the most dangerous question a summoner could ask himself was deceptively simple.

What if I made just one more summon?

The thought rarely arrived at a convenient time.

Sometimes it struck during breakfast while Lilith was arguing with Mother Sarah over the legality of pudding as a vegetable.

Sometimes it appeared in the middle of the night when Gene should have been sleeping but was instead paging through his Nightmare Architect’s Manual.

Sometimes it came while he was brushing his teeth and thinking, You know what this family needs? More monsters.

This particular bout of inspiration struck on a quiet Sunday afternoon.

Gene sat in the lounge with a cup of coffee and his black leather manual spread open across his lap.

Around him, life unfolded in all its peculiar glory.

Lilith and several NPC children built a blanket fort under the supervision of Mother Sarah.

Victor and Morrigan were sketching plans for a self-cleaning laboratory table.

Selene sat beside Gene on the sofa, reading a book with one leg tucked beneath her.

The Caretaker stood near the fireplace, motionless as always, while Lilith occasionally crawled over to drape paper crowns over his mask.

Gene turned another page in the manual.

Dozens of potential blueprints shimmered before him.

New creatures.

New guardians.

New possibilities.

He sighed.

Selene glanced up from her book.

“That sounded like either a brilliant idea or an impending disaster.”

Gene smiled.

“Why not both?”

She closed her book and shifted closer.

“What are you thinking about?”

Gene tapped the open manual.

“I’ve been wondering if we should create someone new.”

Lilith’s head popped out of the blanket fort.

“New friend?”

Mother Sarah sighed, though there was affection in it.

“Your hearing is supernatural.”

Lilith grinned.

“Thank you.”

Gene chuckled and turned back to Selene.

“I’m not sure what role we’re missing.”

He looked around the room.

The family was growing.

The hotel was thriving.

The school was nearly operational.

They had scientists, teachers, guardians, and a small monarch with an army of ravens.

What they did not have, Gene realized, was someone specifically for one member of the family.

His gaze drifted toward the Caretaker.

The masked killer stood perfectly still while a little girl in a cardboard crown attempted to balance a second crown on his shoulder.

The sight made Gene smile.

The Caretaker had become so much more than Gene’s first summon.

He was protector, babysitter, occasional tea party guest, and arguably the emotional center of the hotel’s security staff.

He had accepted this strange family without complaint.

And while he never seemed lonely, Gene wondered.

Everyone else had someone.

Victor had Morrigan.

Mother Sarah had the children.

Lilith had all of them.

Gene had Selene.

The Caretaker had… everyone.

But he had no one who was specifically his.

Gene leaned back.

Then sat upright as the idea struck him.

Selene noticed immediately.

“Oh no.”

Gene grinned.

“I know exactly what we’re missing.”

Selene followed his gaze to the Caretaker.

A slow smile spread across her face.

“You’re going to make him a wife.”

Gene snapped his fingers.

“Exactly.”

Lilith gasped.

“Mister Caretaker gets married!”

The entire room froze.

Victor nearly dropped his pencil.

Morrigan pressed both hands to her chest.

Mother Sarah’s eyes widened.

The Caretaker tilted his head.

Gene looked up at him.

“What do you think?”

The Caretaker stood motionless for several seconds.

Then, very slowly, he tilted his head the other way.

Gene laughed.

“I’ll take that as cautious optimism.”

Lilith launched herself at the Caretaker’s legs.

“You’re getting a wife!”

The masked giant rested one hand gently on her head.

Selene laughed softly and squeezed Gene’s hand.

“This I have to see.”

Designing the Perfect Match

That evening, Gene, Selene, and the rest of the family gathered in the summoning chamber.

The great ancient machine hummed softly, waiting.

Gene stood before the glowing console while ideas tumbled through his mind.

He wanted someone who complemented the Caretaker rather than copying him.

Someone dangerous, yes—but warm where he was silent, expressive where he was reserved.

A woman who could stand beside him as an equal.

Gene turned to Lilith.

“What do you think she should be like?”

Lilith didn’t hesitate.

“Pretty.”

“Good start.”

“Strong enough to pick me up.”

“Excellent.”

“Nice.”

Gene nodded.

“Anything else?”

Lilith considered.

“She should love Mister Caretaker.”

The Caretaker, standing nearby, became very still.

Gene’s smile softened.

“That part is non-negotiable.”

Selene stepped forward.

“She should also be able to speak for both of them when needed.”

Victor adjusted his glasses.

“Perhaps enhanced mobility to complement his relentless durability.”

Morrigan clasped her husband’s hand.

“A romantic counterpart.”

Mother Sarah folded her hands.

“And patience.”

Gene nodded as each suggestion settled into place.

Then details emerged in his imagination.

A shorter woman, compact and powerfully built.

Broad-shouldered and graceful.

Dark auburn hair.

Warm amber eyes.

Tiny black bull horns peeking through her curls.

A wood-splitting axe resting easily on one shoulder.

A Southern accent that sounded like summer evenings, front porches, and sweet tea.

Gene grinned.

“Oh, she’s going to be incredible.”

⸻

The Summoning Description

Gene placed his hands on the console and began to type.

Jesse Belle is a supernatural slasher woman and guardian spirit.

She is shorter than the Caretaker but physically powerful enough to match him.

She is quicker, more agile, and capable of bursts of astonishing speed.

She speaks with a warm Southern American country accent.

She is protective, affectionate, and deeply loyal.

She carries a massive wood-splitting axe as her signature weapon.

Tiny bull horns curve from her hair, giving her a slightly demonic appearance.

She can be terrifying to enemies but gentle to those she loves.

Upon meeting the Caretaker, she recognizes him as her perfect partner and falls deeply in love with him.

She enjoys family life, children, and helping protect the hotel.

Gene stepped back.

The machine flared to life.

Scarlet and gold light flooded the chamber.

The air trembled.

A figure emerged.

⸻

Jesse Belle Arrives

The woman who stepped from the summoning circle was stunning.

She stood a little shorter than the Caretaker, around six feet tall, with a strong athletic build.

Her long auburn hair spilled in loose waves over a fitted flannel shirt, dark leather trousers, and heavy work boots.

Tiny black horns curved delicately from her temples.

Freckles dusted her cheeks.

Warm amber eyes glowed with intelligence and confidence.

Resting across one shoulder was an enormous wood-splitting axe whose polished blade gleamed wickedly.

She looked around the chamber.

Then her gaze landed on the Caretaker.

She froze.

The axe slipped from her shoulder and thudded into the floor.

For one breathless moment, she simply stared.

Then she pressed both hands to her chest.

“Well butter my biscuit.”

Her Southern drawl was rich and warm.

“Ain’t you the finest thing I ever did see.”

The room went completely silent.

The Caretaker did not move.

Jesse Belle approached him slowly, eyes shining.

“Sugar, you are absolutely perfect.”

The Caretaker tilted his head.

Jesse Belle sighed dreamily.

“Oh Lord, and he’s mysterious too.”

Lilith squealed.

“She likes him!”

Jesse Belle looked down and gasped.

“Oh, honey!”

She scooped Lilith into her arms effortlessly.

“Aren’t you just precious?”

Lilith giggled.

“I’m Queen Lilith.”

Jesse Belle kissed her cheek.

“Well, Your Majesty, I am honored.”

She set Lilith down and turned to Gene and Selene.

Her smile was radiant.

“I reckon y’all are the sweethearts responsible for bringing me here.”

Gene grinned.

“That would be us.”

Jesse Belle placed a hand over her heart.

“Thank you kindly.”

Then she turned back to the Caretaker.

“Now, darlin’, I know we just met, but I’m pretty sure I’m in love with you.”

The Caretaker remained motionless.

Jesse Belle nodded seriously.

“That’s all right. We can take things slow.”

⸻

Meeting the Family

Within minutes, Jesse Belle fit into the household as though she had always belonged there.

Victor shook her hand enthusiastically.

Morrigan hugged her.

Mother Sarah smiled warmly.

Fluffy sniffed her boots and received affectionate ear scratches from all three heads.

Jesse Belle charmed everyone.

She praised Mother Sarah’s poise.

Called Victor and Morrigan “the cutest mad scientists this side of the grave.”

And informed Gene that he had “excellent taste in both monsters and women.”

Selene nearly laughed herself breathless.

But it was with Lilith that Jesse Belle connected immediately.

The little queen led her through the hotel, introducing every room with solemn importance.

“This is the playroom.”

“Well, ain’t this delightful.”

“This is Mister Caretaker’s favorite hallway.”

Jesse Belle placed a hand to her heart.

“I can see why.”

Lilith leaned closer.

“Do you really love him?”

Jesse Belle looked toward the towering masked figure following a few steps behind.

Her expression softened.

“With my whole heart, sugar.”

Lilith smiled.

“Good.”

⸻

The Courtship of a Silent Killer

That evening, Jesse Belle sat beside the Caretaker on the balcony overlooking the grounds.

Gene and Selene observed discreetly from a nearby window.

Or at least Gene thought they were discreet.

Jesse Belle swung her legs over the edge of the stone railing.

The Caretaker sat beside her in his usual silent stillness.

She leaned against his shoulder as if she had done so all her life.

“You don’t say much.”

The Caretaker tilted his head.

“That’s okay. I talk enough for two.”

A comfortable silence followed.

Then Jesse Belle reached over and slipped her hand into his.

The Caretaker looked down at their joined hands.

Jesse Belle smiled softly.

“You make me feel safe.”

The Caretaker’s gloved fingers tightened almost imperceptibly around hers.

Jesse Belle beamed.

“There he is.”

Behind the curtains, Gene quietly fist-pumped.

Selene covered her mouth to stifle laughter.

⸻

The Axe Demonstration

The following day, Jesse Belle insisted on a sparring session.

The family gathered in the training yard.

Jesse Belle twirled her massive axe with impossible ease.

“All right, y’all. Let’s show these folks what we can do.”

She moved like a storm.

Fast.

Graceful.

Explosively powerful.

Where the Caretaker was relentless and implacable, Jesse Belle was fluid and aggressive.

She spun, leaped, and struck with enough force to split stone.

Then she vanished in a blur and reappeared behind a target dummy, burying her axe clean through it.

Lilith clapped wildly.

“She’s amazing!”

The Caretaker stood nearby, watching.

Gene sensed something unusual through their bond.

Admiration.

And unmistakable affection.

Gene grinned.

Mission accomplished.

⸻

Tea for Two

Later that afternoon, Lilith organized a special tea party.

This time, two honored guests sat at the tiny table.

The Caretaker occupied one impossibly small chair.

Jesse Belle sat beside him, somehow looking perfectly natural.

She sipped imaginary tea and sighed happily.

“This is just lovely.”

Lilith smiled smugly.

“I knew you’d fit in.”

Jesse Belle winked.

“I aim to please.”

The Caretaker lifted his tiny cup.

Jesse Belle clinked hers gently against it.

“To family.”

The Caretaker inclined his head.

Lilith raised her cup as well.

“To family.”

⸻

Gene’s Satisfaction

That night, Gene stood on the balcony with Selene.

Below them, Jesse Belle and the Caretaker walked the moonlit grounds hand in hand.

Jesse Belle talked animatedly while the Caretaker listened in silence.

They looked perfect together.

Selene rested her head on Gene’s shoulder.

“You did good.”

Gene smiled.

“I think he likes her.”

Selene laughed.

“She had him at ‘well butter my biscuit.’”

Gene snorted.

“That’s fair.”

They watched as Jesse Belle stopped, rose onto her toes, and kissed the Caretaker’s mask.

The giant slasher placed a protective arm around her waist.

Gene felt a quiet surge of contentment.

His family had grown again.

Not through necessity.

Not for strategy.

But because someone he cared about deserved companionship.

Selene squeezed his hand.

“You’re building more than a kingdom.”

Gene looked at the grounds below.

The hotel.

The academy.

The monsters and the people who had become his home.

The silent killer and the horned woman with the country accent walking together beneath the stars.

He smiled.

“Yeah,” he said softly.

“I think I really am.”
