Summoner of Nightmares
Chapter 30: Dinner with the Future In-Laws
Gene Gingerline had fought in a magical arena.
He had stared down griffins, noble brats, and the occasional trespasser who thought robbing a haunted hotel was a sound life choice.
He commanded a masked slasher, a ghostly nun, a monster queen, and a married pair of scientists who treated grave robbing as a hobby.
None of that really prepared him for meeting Selene’s parents.
⸻
The Invitation
The letter arrived on cream-colored paper thick enough to stop a knife.
Its silver seal bore the crest of House Ashcroft: a crescent moon framed by ivy and stars.
Gene turned the envelope over in his hands while sitting in his study.
Selene stood nearby, trying—and failing—to appear calm.
“You’re pacing.”
Selene stopped.
“I am not.”
Gene raised an eyebrow.
She resumed pacing.
“Okay, perhaps a little.”
Gene broke the seal and unfolded the letter.
The handwriting was elegant and flowing.
Dear Selene,
Your mother and I would be delighted if you and Mr. Gene Gingerline would join us for dinner at Moonveil Manor this upcoming Saturday.
Your mother is absolutely determined to meet the young man who has convinced our daughter to smile so strongly at breakfast.
Bring your appetite, you know how your mother is.
— Lord Orion Ashcroft
Gene read it twice.
Then looked up.
“Your father sounds surprisingly charming.”
Selene’s cheeks warmed.
“He is.”
“And your mother?”
Selene smiled.
“She’s even more wonderful.”
Gene narrowed his eyes.
“That answer contained absolutely no useful information.”
Selene laughed and crossed the room to sit on the edge of his desk.
“They’re kind, but… eccentric.”
Gene leaned back in his chair.
“In what way?”
Selene considered.
“My father treats life like an ongoing experiment.”
“That sounds pretty fun.”
“My mother believes every emotional situation can be improved with baked goods.”
Gene thought about that.
“Atleast I know your mother and Lilith are going to get along.”
Selene smiled, but her fingers twisted in her lap.
Gene reached for her hand.
“Hey.”
She looked at him.
“Are you worried?”
“A little.”
Gene squeezed her fingers.
“So am I.”
Selene blinked.
“Really?”
Gene snorted.
“Selene, I have been accepted by a serial killer, a ghost nun, and a tiny monster queen. If your parents don’t like me, it will somehow hurt more.”
Selene laughed.
Then she leaned up and kissed him.
“They’ll love you.”
Gene smiled.
“Bold statement.”
He touched his forehead to her.
“I mean it.”
⸻
Preparations
The household treated the dinner like a royal campaign.
Mother Sarah helped Gene select an appropriate suit.
Victor offered to create a “conversation-enhancing electro cravat.”
Gene declined.
Morrigan suggested a subtle confidence potion.
Gene declined that as well.
Lilith was deeply invested.
She sat cross-legged on Gene’s bed while he adjusted his tie.
“Remember,” she said matter of factly, “if they are mean, I can send fluffy after them.”
Gene smiled.
“That’s very sweet, but hopefully unnecessary.”
Lilith nodded.
“Then be polite, tell them they raised a wonderful daughter, and compliment the food.”
Gene blinked.
“Where did you learn that?”
Lilith shrugged.
“Mother Sarah.”
The nun, standing in the doorway, inclined her head.
“A practical approach.”
The Caretaker stepped forward and straightened Gene’s collar with surprising precision.
Gene stared.
“Thank you.”
The masked killer gave a single nod.
Gene looked around at his bizarre support system.
“Somehow, this is the healthiest family dynamic I’ve ever had.”
⸻
Arrival at Moonveil Manor
Moonveil Manor stood atop a gently sloping hill surrounded by silver-barked trees and moonlit gardens.
The estate was large but elegant rather than ostentatious.
Graceful towers rose above ivy-covered stone walls.
Soft magical lanterns drifted through the grounds like fireflies.
Gene stepped from the carriage and looked up.
“Okay,” he said quietly. “Your family has excellent taste.”
Selene smiled, though her hand tightened around his.
“You’re doing great.”
The front doors opened before they reached them.
Lady Celestine Ashcroft swept out in a swirl of midnight-blue silk.
She was beautiful in the way Selene was beautiful, though warmer and more openly expressive.
The resemblance between mother and daughter was unmistakable.
“Oh!”
Before Gene could react, Celestine embraced Selene.
Then she turned and seized Gene in an equally enthusiastic hug.
“You must be Gene.”
Gene, currently being squeezed by a noblewoman he had just met, managed a polite smile.
“It’s wonderful to meet you.”
Celestine stepped back and cupped his face.
“My dear, you look exactly like someone who hasn’t been fed enough.”
Gene blinked.
“I beg your pardon?”
“Come inside.”
She looped an arm through his.
“I made six desserts.”
Gene glanced at Selene.
Selene mouthed, I told you.
⸻
Lord Orion Ashcroft
The manor’s great hall was lined with books, enchanted artwork, and tasteful displays of magical artifacts.
At the base of a sweeping staircase stood Lord Orion Ashcroft.
Tall and silver-haired, he wore deep green robes embroidered with constellations.
Round spectacles rested on his nose, and his sharp eyes glittered with curiosity rather than severity.
He regarded Gene thoughtfully.
Then he smiled.
“So you’re the young man who weaponized horror fiction.”
Gene inclined his head.
“That would be me.”
Orion extended his hand.
Gene shook it.
The older man’s grip was firm.
“Excellent. I’ve had twelve questions prepared since breakfast.”
Selene groaned.
“Father.”
Orion waved her off.
“Relax. This is how I express affection.”
Gene laughed.
“I respect the honesty.”
Orion’s smile widened.
“Good answer.”
⸻
Dinner
The dining room was magnificent.
The food was better.
Celestine floated around the table making sure everyone had enough to eat.
Orion asked Gene about Earth.
Selene relaxed visibly as the evening progressed.
Gene found himself genuinely enjoying their company.
Celestine wanted to hear stories about Lilith.
Orion was fascinated by Victor and Morrigan.
At one point, Celestine dabbed at her eyes.
“She called Selene ‘Mama Selene’?”
Selene blushed crimson.
Gene smiled.
“She did.”
Celestine clasped her hands.
“That is unbearably adorable.”
Orion cleared his throat.
“She likes children.”
Selene buried her face in her hands.
Gene nearly choked on his wine.
⸻
The Test
After dinner, Orion led Gene to his private study.
It was a spacious room filled with books, telescopes, and magical diagrams.
A large summoning pedestal stood in the center.
Orion clasped his hands behind his back.
“Relax. This isn’t a trap.”
Gene eyed the pedestal.
“That sentence does not inspire confidence.”
Orion chuckled.
“I have no intention of grilling you about your intentions toward my daughter.”
Gene blinked.
“You don’t?”
Orion looked genuinely puzzled.
“Selene is perfectly capable of handling that herself.”
Gene nodded slowly.
“Fair point.”
Orion gestured to the pedestal.
“I am interested in your creativity.”
He turned to Gene.
“House Ashcroft values wisdom, stewardship, and protection. Suppose you wished to create a summon that complemented our household. What would you design?”
Gene looked at the summoning machine.
This was not a challenge of strength.
It was a challenge of understanding.
He thought about Selene.
Her compassion.
Her intelligence.
Her protective instincts.
He thought about Celestine’s warmth and Orion’s curiosity.
And then an idea formed.
Gene smiled.
“I know exactly what I’d make.”
⸻
The Moon Librarian
Gene stepped to the pedestal and began entering a description.
A serene guardian spirit appearing as an elegant woman in flowing silver robes.
She serves as both librarian and protector.
She preserves knowledge, guides students, and shields the manor from magical intrusion.
She can summon living books, moonlight barriers, and memory spirits.
She is patient, wise, and fiercely protective of those under her care.
The machine hummed.
Silver light filled the study.
A woman emerged.
She appeared to be in her early thirties, with luminous silver hair and kind moonlit eyes.
Her robes shimmered like starlit water.
Several ancient tomes floated around her in silent orbit.
She bowed gracefully.
“I am Lunaria, Keeper of the Moon Archive.”
Orion stared.
Then slowly removed his spectacles and cleaned them.
Celestine, who had entered unnoticed with Selene, pressed a hand to her heart.
“She’s beautiful.”
Selene’s eyes shone.
Gene exhaled.
Lunaria turned to the family.
“My purpose is to preserve knowledge, protect this household, and nurture those who seek wisdom.”
One of the floating books opened.
Moonlight spilled across the room, forming a protective dome around the group.
Orion let out a delighted laugh.
“Oh, I adore her.”
⸻
Approval
Orion turned to Gene.
“Do you know why this impressed me?”
Gene shook his head.
“Because you did not create something designed to show off.”
The lord gestured to Lunaria.
“You created something that reflects our values.”
Celestine smiled warmly.
“And you made her beautiful.”
Selene slipped her hand into Gene’s.
Orion approached him.
For one tense moment, Gene wondered if the man intended to cast some obscure truth spell.
Instead, Orion placed a hand on his shoulder.
“You have my approval.”
Gene felt a surprising wave of relief.
“Thank you.”
Celestine hugged him again.
“Welcome to the family, dear.”
Gene froze.
Selene’s eyes widened.
Celestine blinked.
“Oh. Was that too soon?”
Gene laughed.
“No,” he said, voice thick with emotion.
“Not at all.”
⸻
Moonlit Confessions
Later, Gene and Selene walked through the manor gardens.
Silver flowers glowed softly beneath the moon.
Selene leaned against him.
“They love you.”
Gene wrapped an arm around her waist.
“I love them too.”
She looked up, smiling.
“You passed my father’s test.”
Gene grinned.
“Your mother’s dessert test was harder.”
Selene laughed.
Then her expression softened.
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For taking this seriously.”
Gene brushed a strand of hair from her face.
“Selene, you’re important to me.”
Her eyes shimmered.
She rose onto her toes and kissed him.
Long.
Tender.
Certain.
When they parted, Gene rested his forehead against hers.
“I’m glad I came.”
Selene smiled.
“So am I.”
⸻
Home Again
When they returned to the Nightmare Grand Hotel, Lilith was waiting in the lobby in her nightgown.
She rubbed sleep from her eyes.
“Well, how did everything go?”
Gene scooped her into his arms.
“They liked me.”
Lilith beamed.
“I knew they would.”
Selene kissed Lilith’s forehead.
“My parents told me to tell you hello as well.”
Lilith smiled happily.
“So… Now you both can get married!”
Gene nearly dropped her.
Selene turned scarlet.
Mother Sarah, standing nearby with crossed arms, looked entirely too amused.
Lilith snuggled against Gene’s shoulder.
“I want to be the one that throws the flower petals! Oooo! Can I also help choose the cake?”
Gene stared helplessly at Selene.
Selene was laughing too hard to help.
Gene looked down at the little girl who had so casually skipped several major relationship milestones.
“You don’t waste time, do you?”
Lilith smiled sleepily.
“Nope.”
Gene carried her upstairs, Selene at his side.
The hotel was quiet.
Warm.
Alive.
As Gene walked through the halls of the world he had built, with his daughter in his arms and the woman he loved beside him, he felt a deep and profound certainty.
Whatever challenges awaited him.
Whatever battles remained.
He was exactly where he was meant to be.
