Chapter 1605: Failing at the last moment

After the door opened, the room that was revealed came as a surprise to Lin Fan and Ye Qing Huan.

"It’s just an office."

There really wasn’t anything special in this room, it seemed like the office of someone that worked in this research facility.

But the fact that it was an office for one person was enough to show that it wasn’t normal. Not to mention that this was an office that had been placed on the third floor where all the important research was placed.

On the second floor, the offices had all been crammed into a single space as if they wanted to put as many people as possible in that single room.

So there was no doubt that this was the office of someone quite important.

Lin Fan came forward with the token in hand, making sure to keep his guard up just in case there was something else in this place. After all, the record room just now had three layers of defenses, so it wouldn’t make sense that there would only be one layer in this office.

It was just that there was no reaction that came from the token.

No matter how many steps he took, it felt like this token was completely silent.

"Is it because there’s nothing here or is it because this isn’t something the token can help me with?" Lin Fan couldn’t help thinking to himself while a bitter feeling filled him.

As he continued like this, he was able to reach the desk that was the center piece of this room. It was the thing that attracted the most attention, the thing that seemed to be what the rest of the room was centered around.

It was just that there was nothing on this desk.

Even when Lin Fan looked at the drawers, he could tell that there were things that had been there once but they had been taken away. WIth the state the the drawers had even been left in, it was as if someone had dug through them just to remove everything.

This didn’t seem like something that had been done by the ones that were in charge of this research lab. It seemed like something that had been done by an outsider that was searching for the things that were hidden in this lab.

Though for them to do something like this, it should mean that the things that they searched for should have some kind of value.

"In this situation, it should mean the opposite though." Lin Fan couldn’t help thinking this to himself.

When the Dao Sect was destroyed, it had been destroyed for trying to obtain information about things that were above its level.

So if there was something that someone was searching for, it was most likely related to that. They were here looking for the thing that had to be destroyed so that this information wouldn’t be passed on.

"Find what you’re looking for?"

Both Lin Fan and Ye Qing Huan jumped when they heard this voice.

When they turned around, they found that there was someone floating there.

Though when they saw this person, it wasn’t as if they were that surprised to see him. Rather, the two of them looked at this person as if they were already expecting this.

But after thinking about it, their expressions changed.

Since coming to this inner part of the Dao Sect, this was something that they had never encountered before.

It was common for them to see the remnants left behind by the elders of the Dao Sect in the outer part of the Dao Sect, but it wasn’t as common in the inner part. After all, the pavilions in the inner part of the Dao Sect operated completely differently from those in the outer part.

Yet there was someone that was floating there in front of them.

Seeing the way that the two of them looked at him, this person just said with a smile, "Is it really that surprising to see someone like me? I think that you must have already encountered something similar before this."

Wry smiles appeared on Lin Fan and Ye Qing Huan’s faces as they didn’t know how to respond to this elder.

From the way that they were dressed, Lin Fan could tell that he was one of the researchers of this lab. In fact, the fact that he appeared in this place most likely meant that he was the director of this lab.

Only it didn’t make sense that the director would speak to them directly like this.

Seeing that they still weren’t saying anything, the director said, "Well, when people are wandering around in your territory, it’s only normal that you would want to keep watch over them."

Then he narrowed his eyes to look at Lin Fan, or more specifically he was looking at the token that was in Lin Fan’s hand. The look in his eyes showed that he recognized this token and knew what it was for.

But in the end, he didn’t say anything about it.

It didn’t seem like he wasn’t capable of saying anything, it was just that he didn’t seem like he wanted to say anything.

After all, he suddenly changed the topic by saying, "You aren’t qualified to inherit the will of this lab."

The elder had said this specifically while looking at Lin Fan, almost as if he was proving a point.

A strange look appeared on both Lin Fan and Ye Qing Huan’s face when they heard this. At the same time, they looked at the elder as if they were trying to figure out what he meant by this.

It was just that the elder didn’t seem to want to explain this. The look that was on the elder’s face was as if he thought that they should already know the answer to this question.

Though it wasn’t as if the two of them didn’t actually know the answer.

It was quite the simple answer and it didn’t take any thought to think of it.

Simply put, it was that the elder was right.

Lin Fan just simply wasn’t the type to get lost in research like this. He wasn’t even a good student in his past life, so it wasn’t as if he would have ever been interested in a place like this.

However, it wasn’t as if he had a choice since he wanted the inheritance of the elder and this research lab. So even if he wasn’t actually interested, he had to at least act like he was interested.

"There’s no need for you to act this way, it’s not as if there’s no other choice." The elder spoke before Lin Fan could even say anything. The words that he said struck at the heart of what they were thinking, so it was hard for them to say anything in the end.

All they could do was look at the elder with strange looks as they waited for his answer.

The elder didn’t mind them looking at him like this, instead the elder turned to look at Xiao Mu who was still standing outside. As he looked at Xiao Mu, it was as if he was appreciating him which seemed even more strange for Lin Fan and Ye Qing Huan.

"It’s very simple, that one has the will to carry on our research."

Neither Lin Fan nor Ye Qing Huan were really that surprised by these words since they could already guess that this was what the elder had wanted to say with the way that it had been acting.

However, it wasn’t as if they were going to accept it that easily.

"Why Xiao Mu?" Ye Qing Huan had been silent the entire time since it wasn’t her place to say anything, but it was different when it involved Xiao Mu.

The elder didn’t seem to mind the way that Ye Qing Huan said this as he casually said, "It’s like I said, that one has the will to carry on our research. I think you should be very clear on what I mean by this."

Once again, neither Lin Fan or Ye Qing Huan were surprised to hear this.

They could already think of something that proved what the elder said, so they knew that the elder was sincere about this.

It was just that beyond this sincerity, they wanted to know what the elder was really planning.

"Can you even say that when you won’t even let Xiao Mu into these important parts of the lab?" Lin Fan pointed out the only thing that he could think of.

Though he said this in a provoking tone that didn’t hold back at all, the elder didn’t seem to be offended by this at all. Instead, the elder even seemed to find all of this funny with the way that he suddenly revealed a smile.

As he shook his head with this same smile on his face, the elder said, "That’s actually quite easy to explain. It’s all because your friend is quite the special specimen."

Both Lin Fan and Ye Qing Huan knitted their brows when they heard what the elder said.

In particular, they didn’t like the way that the elder said the word ’specimen’.

It was almost as if he was treating Xiao Mu as some kind of study case.

Though for Lin Fan, it wasn’t as if he couldn’t understand why the elder would treat Xiao Mu like this.

If he was in the same field as the elder, then he would certainly see Xiao Mu as something similar.
