“There’s nothing much else to worry about.”

Chen Wen said with a smile after helping Adam repair the roof.

Adam nodded and thanked Chen Wen.

After clearing the snow outside and chatting a bit, seeing that the snowstorm was about to intensify again, everyone quickly returned to the shelter.

But just as Chen Wen returned to the camp.

Outside, Wuwu unexpectedly came to the shelter.

It let out a series of roars, calling Chen Wen’s name.

Hearing Wuwu’s call, Chen Wen immediately left the shelter and went outside.

Wuwu’s expression was somewhat alarmed.

Seeing Chen Wen approaching, it quickly came closer.

Chen Wen reached out his hand to soothe Wuwu: “What’s wrong? What happened? Don’t panic. Any problem can be solved with me here!”

Upon hearing this, Wuwu calmed down a bit.

Then it said, “I smelled some strange odors while resting near the nest.”

Strange odors?

Chen Wen frowned slightly and asked, “What kind of smell? Can you identify who it is?”

Wuwu shook its head: “I don’t know, but I can feel the scent is dangerous. It’s not the smell of one animal; there are many animals.”

Many animals, which means they’re moving in groups!

Chen Wen frowned slightly and asked, “Could it be the scent of prey?”

Wuwu thought for a moment and shook its head: “I’m not sure, but for some reason, I keep feeling a voice warning me not to approach those creatures with that scent.”

“I see… Okay, I understand.”

Chen Wen said: “While the snowstorm isn’t too bad, I’ll go out with Golden Eagle to check it out with you. If it’s the scent of prey, that would be best. But if it’s not the scent of herbivores, those moving creatures in this weather could be a bit dangerous!”

Upon hearing this, Wuwu looked at Chen Wen with confusion.

It wasn’t clear about animals that hunt during snowstorms, but Chen Wen knew for sure.

Around Lake Baikal, there is a very fierce predator. They move in groups, are very agile, but are very few in number!

They are the Siberian Plain Wolves!

There are wolves at Lake Baikal, but their numbers are notably small.

In the earlier years, the wolf packs were often killed by local herders and farmers for hunting livestock, causing their territory to shrink into the deep forests around Lake Baikal.

Humans rarely encounter them.

However, there is a chance for Chen Wen and the others to encounter a wolf pack where they are surviving this time.

Hence, Chen Wen intended to eliminate this hidden danger.

He called for the Golden Eagle, picked up a spear, and after informing Hua Yun and the others, left the camp.

…

Though the blizzard continued at this time, the wind had lessened compared to before, roughly at level six or seven, and the snow was probably moderate.

The weather didn’t have too severe an impact on Chen Wen.

However, the snow on the ground made it somewhat difficult for Chen Wen to move.

This time, he didn’t have any traits that improved his movement efficiency in the snow, so his pace was slow.

Wuwu led the way ahead. As they walked, Chen Wen asked, “When did you smell those scents?”

Because Chen Wen was covering his face, his voice wasn’t very loud; Wuwu didn’t hear him clearly, so Chen Wen had to repeat it.

Wuwu then said, “It was quite a while back, I remember it was when the snow was still quite heavy.”

Which would be two or three hours ago.

Chen Wen estimated the time and let Wuwu lead the way.

Following Wuwu’s tracks, Chen Wen quickly arrived near its nest with Wuwu.

Chen Wen had the Golden Eagle take off to check the surroundings.

Chen Wen and Wuwu then approached the nest to start looking for the scent’s source.

Lately, Wuwu and the lynx’s special training had paid off, and relying on its enhanced sense of smell, Wuwu quickly identified the direction from which the scent came: “Roughly over here.”

Northeast direction, near the lake.

Chen Wen frowned slightly and walked in the direction Wuwu pointed.

After a few steps, Chen Wen saw some tracks in the snow ahead.

He raised an eyebrow and immediately quickened his pace, intending to see what kind of tracks these were.

Upon reaching the vicinity of the tracks.

Although it was clear they were footprints, due to the age of the footprints and the significant amount of snow during this period, Chen Wen couldn’t determine whose footprints they were.

He took off his gloves and tried to clear the accumulated snow from the footprints with his hand.

But still, it was no use.

The snow that had fallen during this time made the footprints difficult to identify.

“Can’t quite make it out.”

Chen Wen put his gloves back on and shook his head.

Wuwu heard this and continued to lead the way.

After walking a while longer, Wuwu indicated that this was where the scent was strongest.

Chen Wen searched around and finally discovered the scent’s source near a bush.

“Is this something that peed here?”

Chen Wen walked to the side of the bush, looking at the marks in the snow, and could even make out a bit of yellow.

There were also some congealed liquid drops on the bush.

Chen Wen didn’t touch these things; he had already determined it was some animal’s excrement.

“This stuff stinks!”

Chen Wen complained and asked Wuwu to step back a bit.

He estimated the animal’s size using the ice drops on the bush: “This thing isn’t too big but not too small either. If it’s a predator, it should be a medium to large mammal. If it’s a herbivore, then it’s between a Siberian Roe Deer and an Elk in size.”

Upon hearing Chen Wen’s analysis, Wuwu immediately showed an impressed expression.

Without even seeing the creature, Chen Wen could already narrow down some information about it. This ability made Wuwu particularly envious.

Seemingly noticing Wuwu’s thoughts, Chen Wen smiled and patted Wuwu’s big head: “Don’t worry, I’ll teach you these things over the next few days. By the time I leave, you should have learned most of it.”

Upon hearing this, Wuwu couldn’t help but ask, “After you leave, will you come back?”

“Of course.”

Chen Wen said with a smile: “And if you ever change your mind, you can tell me when I come, and I’ll take you with me.”

Wuwu thought about it and said, “That might be when I’m left incapable of walking.”

While Chen Wen and Wuwu were talking, a sharp cry came from the sky.

Chen Wen looked up, and the Golden Eagle soared down with the wind, landing beside Chen Wen with a whoosh.

It shook its wings and said, “Found something. I saw a group of animals that look a bit like dogs, just like the dog living with Jiang Xue.”

Dogs?

Chen Wen was taken aback and quickly recalled: “Oh, you mean that stray dog often seen at the zoo?”

“Yes, that one, looked a lot like it.”

The Golden Eagle nodded.

Chen Wen acknowledged, confirming the animals’ identity from the scent: “Then it must be the Siberian Plain Wolves. That dog was a husky, and the Siberian Plain Wolves are the ancestors of huskies.”

In appearance, the Siberian Plain Wolves and huskies are very similar.

Many images of Siberian Plain Wolves, if not examined closely, can easily be mixed up with pictures of huskies.

After confirming the animals’ identity, Chen Wen asked, “Did you see the wolves’ path? Where are they heading?”

The Golden Eagle replied, “I’m not sure, but if they don’t change direction, they seem to be heading north along the lake’s shore.”
