Chapter 269: Chapter 265: Psycho Couple 29
Just two days after Wu Chufeng and Ji Xiaosong’s wedding, Wu Wanqing came calling while Wu Chufeng was away at court.
Given the precedent of Xiao Mumu forcing her way in last time, Wu Wanqing was stopped at the gate by the guard captain.
"You insolent dog! How dare you block my path!"
Wu Wanqing’s eyebrows shot up and her eyes widened in fury as she glared at the guard captain. Her voice was so shrill it seemed to slice through the air.
"I am Wu Chufeng’s biological sister! How dare you be so rude!"
She had dressed up in her finest for the occasion—a magnificent brocade robe with swaying pearls and jewels in her hair. But now, her face was contorted with rage, making her elaborate makeup look grotesque.
The guard captain’s expression was grim, his posture as straight and unyielding as a pine. Uncowed by Wu Wanqing’s tirade, he cupped his fists and said with neither servility nor arrogance, "Miss Wu, the mansion is under orders. Without the master’s permission, no unauthorized persons are allowed entry. I hope you will not make things difficult for us."
"Unauthorized persons? You’re calling *me* an unauthorized person?"
Wu Wanqing laughed as if she’d heard the funniest joke in the world, a sound dripping with mockery and rage. "My daughter was murdered! I’ve come to demand an explanation from my own brother, and you’re stopping me at the door! Is there any justice left in this world?!"
With that, she took a step forward, intending to force her way inside.
The guard captain quickly moved to block her path. Behind him, the guards tensed, gripping their weapons and moving into defensive stances.
This sight pushed Wu Wanqing’s fury to its peak, and she began to shriek curses at the gate of the Wu Family residence:
"Wu Chufeng, you heartless beast! You murdered your own niece! You deserve a miserable death! How can you still show your face in this world!"
Her screams attracted a crowd of passersby, who all stared with a mixture of curiosity and surprise.
Inside, Ji Xiaosong was sipping tea in the main hall. She frowned slightly upon hearing the commotion outside.
She set down her teacup and spoke quietly to her maid. "Go. Have someone bring that madwoman from the gate in here. Don’t let her continue making a scene outside." The maid bowed and departed.
Before long, several burly guards entered, hauling Wu Wanqing between them.
Wu Wanqing was still struggling violently, her mouth a torrent of curses. "You pack of dogs, unhand me! Ji Xiaosong, you demoness! You and Wu Chufeng conspired to murder my daughter! I’ll see you pay with your lives!"
Ji Xiaosong remained in the seat of honor, her expression placid but her eyes icy. She watched Wu Wanqing being brought in as if observing a pathetic clown.
"Gag her," Ji Xiaosong said flatly.
A guard immediately stepped forward and gagged Wu Wanqing with a strip of cloth. Wu Wanqing could only make muffled cries, her eyes burning with hatred as she stared fixedly at Ji Xiaosong.
Ji Xiaosong rose unhurriedly and walked with elegant steps to stand before Wu Wanqing. Looking down at her, the corners of Ji Xiaosong’s lips curled into a mocking smile.
"Miss Wu, you keep insisting that we murdered your daughter. Do you have any proof? If you don’t, are you prepared to bear the consequences of slander?"
Wu Wanqing shook her head desperately, trying to speak past the gag, her hands flailing in the air.
At this sight, Ji Xiaosong raised a hand slightly, gesturing for the guards to remove the gag.
Wu Wanqing gasped for breath before shouting, "If not you, then who? After you locked her up, Mumu mysteriously turned up dead in a cesspit! If you weren’t behind it, then who was?!"
Ji Xiaosong sneered. "Miss Wu, you shouldn’t make baseless accusations. Xiao Mumu committed an outrageous offense by causing such a scene at our wedding. My husband merely had her confined to reflect on her actions; he did nothing more. As for her death... who knows? Perhaps it was simply karmic retribution for her own evil deeds."
"Nonsense!"
Wu Wanqing’s eyes were bloodshot, practically spitting fire. "My daughter was pregnant with a child of the Wu bloodline! How could Wu Chufeng possibly let her live? You must have committed this vicious act to eliminate the threat, root and stem!"
Ji Xiaosong’s expression sharpened, a flash of displeasure in her eyes. "Miss Wu, watch your tongue! Are you trying to stir up conflict within the family with these baseless accusations? As the eldest miss of the Wu Mansion, surely you understand the need to protect the family’s reputation?"
Wu Wanqing was rendered speechless by this retort. She glared venomously at Ji Xiaosong, her chest heaving with rage.
’I actually didn’t know Xiao Mumu was dead, much less that she died so horribly.’
’I’m not sure if Wu Chufeng was the one who did it, but I’m about eighty percent certain he was.’
’It’s exactly the kind of thing he would do.’
Just then, footsteps sounded from outside. Wu Chufeng had returned from court.
Wu Chufeng strode into the hall with a steady gait. Upon seeing Wu Wanqing restrained by the guards, a mocking smirk immediately spread across his face.
He sauntered over to the seat of honor, reaching out to gently stroke Ji Xiaosong’s shoulder. Then he looked down at Wu Wanqing, his eyes sizing her up as if she were a worthless ant.
"Sister, what’s this little drama you’re staging?"
Wu Chufeng’s voice was dripping with mockery. "What’s wrong? Couldn’t bear to stay in your own residence, so you came to mine to throw a fit? Have you no sense of propriety?"
At the sight of him, Wu Wanqing struggled with all her might, screaming at the top of her lungs:
"Wu Chufeng, stop playing dumb! You murdered my daughter, and you owe me an explanation!"
Wu Chufeng raised an eyebrow, a flicker of disdain in his eyes. "Sister, one must be careful with their words. When did I ever harm Mumu? I was already exceptionally lenient with her, for her sake as my niece and your daughter. She caused such a ruckus at the wedding, disrupting my and Xiaosong’s celebration. I only had her locked up for two days before letting her go. What else would I have done?"
"Lies!"
Wu Wanqing’s eyes bulged, welling with tears. Her voice trembled with rage and grief. "After you locked her up, Mumu was found dead in a cesspit! If it wasn’t you, who was it? She was carrying a child of the Wu Family’s bloodline!"
Wu Chufeng’s arrogant expression didn’t falter. He snorted coldly.
"Sister, perhaps Mumu was just so spoiled by you that she carelessly fell into the cesspit on her own, and now you want to pin the blame on me? I am an esteemed Assistant Minister; why would I involve myself in such a filthy matter? You, on the other hand, sister, stormed into my home without any regard for the facts and made a scene at my front gate. Are you trying to make our Wu Family the laughingstock of the entire Capital City?"
Ji Xiaosong sat to one side, quietly observing the scene unfold.
Although she found herself eighty percent convinced by his words, she remained perfectly composed, only lifting her eyes occasionally to observe his expression.
Wu Chufeng sensed Ji Xiaosong’s gaze, and tilting his head slightly, he offered her a faint, reassuring smile.
Wu Wanqing was so enraged by his speech that her whole body trembled, yet she was momentarily unable to find a retort.
She pointed a trembling finger at Wu Chufeng. "You... you... you conscienceless monster!"
Wu Chufeng waved his hand impatiently and said to the guard captain:
"What are you waiting for? Miss Wu is overwrought. Take her away so she can calm down. Don’t let her disturb the lady of the house."
The guard captain acknowledged the command. He and several other guards moved forward again to remove Wu Wanqing.
Wu Wanqing struggled, shouting, "Wu Chufeng, you’re so cruel today! You’ll get what’s coming to you! I will never let you get away with this!"
Wu Chufeng remained impassive, simply watching with cold eyes as Wu Wanqing was hauled away.
"Did you really kill Xiao Mumu?"
