Chapter 270: Chapter 266: The Unhinged Couple 30

"Of course it wasn’t me."

Wu Chufeng answered without the slightest hesitation.

Ji Xiaosong bit her lower lip, a trace of suspicion still lingering in her eyes. She looked up and stared straight at Wu Chufeng, pressing him, "Then according to you, how exactly did Xiao Mumu die in a cesspool?"

Wu Chufeng’s expression was relaxed. He reached out and gently smoothed his sleeve, a careless look on his face, as if he were discussing some trivial, unimportant matter.

"My dear, it was really just her own bad luck. After being locked up for two days and released, that Xiao Mumu was still not convinced. She actually tried the same trick again, getting a bucket of filth and planning to come to our gates to cause another scene."

He paused for a moment, a cold glint flashing in his eyes. "Who would have thought? As she was swaggering over to our estate with that bucket, she spilled most of it and had to turn back. This time, she slipped by the edge of the cesspool."

Wu Chufeng gestured as he spoke, his tone tinged with mockery. "And just like that, SPLASH! She fell into the cesspool. She was pampered her whole life, so she couldn’t swim. It just so happened there wasn’t a soul around. Even though she desperately screamed for help, no one heard her. And so she drowned, right there in the cesspool."

Ji Xiaosong listened quietly, her brows knitted together the entire time.

"Chu Feng, is every word you’re saying true?"

Ji Xiaosong spoke again, her gaze locked on Wu Chufeng’s eyes, trying to find any flaw in his story.

Wu Chufeng met her gaze, reached out to gently tap her nose, and said with a smile, "My dear, am I so untrustworthy in your eyes? If I really wanted to deal with Xiao Mumu, why would I go to such trouble? I could have just ended her life right at the wedding. Besides, we’re newlyweds. Why would I do anything over her trivial matters to upset you?"

Ji Xiaosong gently swatted his hand away. Although her doubts hadn’t completely vanished, his words had managed to ease them somewhat.

’She couldn’t help but think of Wu Daniu. He was once a figure of considerable prestige in the imperial court, but now he had been stripped of his official post completely. Meanwhile, Wu Chufeng’s position as Assistant Minister was solid as a rock, growing even more secure.’

’It was clear that Wu Chufeng had his own unique way of surviving in the political arena; he was not someone who could be easily shaken.’

"Fine, let’s drop the matter for now. But your sister... she will definitely not believe your story so easily. I’m afraid she’ll cause a lot of trouble in the future."

Ji Xiaosong sighed helplessly. ’I’ve traveled through quite a few worlds, but this is the first time I’ve met someone like Wu Chufeng, who takes revenge so swiftly he won’t even let a grudge last the night.’

The corners of Wu Chufeng’s mouth curved into a confident smile as he gently pulled Ji Xiaosong into his arms. "My dear, don’t worry. I will handle Wu Wanqing myself. She can’t make any big waves. I will definitely not let her disturb our lives."

"Mm, of course I trust you. I won’t be eating at home tonight. Xiao Hua wants to go to the Drunken Immortal Pavilion, so I plan to take her to try their new dishes."

’It was only after taking over Wu Chufeng’s businesses that Ji Xiaosong learned the Drunken Immortal Pavilion was actually one of his properties.’

"Alright, go ahead."

The moment Ji Xiaosong left, the gentle smile on his face vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, stern expression.

He turned and walked toward the woodshed where Wu Wanqing was being held.

Inside the woodshed, Wu Wanqing sat on the ground in a wretched state, her hair a mess.

Her once-magnificent brocade robe was now covered in dust, and her eyes were filled with rage and indignation.

Hearing footsteps, she snapped her head up. Seeing Wu Chufeng enter, she immediately struggled to her feet and screamed at him, "Wu Chufeng, you bastard! Give me back my daughter’s life!"

Wu Chufeng’s expression was placid, as if he had turned a deaf ear to Wu Wanqing’s curses.

He walked to the center of the woodshed, looking down at Wu Wanqing, and spoke coldly:

"Sister, stop making a scene. I came today to have a proper talk with you."

Wu Wanqing snorted coldly. "Talk to you? You killed my daughter! I have nothing to talk about with you!"

Wu Chufeng frowned slightly, a flicker of impatience in his eyes. "Sister, if you continue to be so unreasonable, don’t blame me for being discourteous. Have you no thought for your son?"

At the mention of her son, Wu Wanqing’s body trembled slightly, and a flash of panic crossed her eyes.

Seeing this, Wu Chufeng continued, "You know as well as I do that Father has been stripped of his post. The future of the Wu Family now rests entirely on my shoulders. If you keep making a scene and blow this matter up, what good will it do the Wu Family? What good will it do your son?"

Wu Wanqing gritted her teeth. "So what are you saying? We just let my daughter’s matter go? She was pregnant with a child!"

Wu Chufeng sneered. "Sister, Xiao Mumu brought her death upon herself. The way she carried on at the wedding... I didn’t deal with her on the spot purely out of consideration for our family ties. As for the cause of her death, I’ve already told Ji Xiaosong, but I don’t mind telling you again. After she was released, she showed no remorse and tried to cause trouble with a bucket of filth again. She ended up slipping and falling into a cesspool. There was no one around, and that’s how she lost her life. Can you blame me for that?"

Wu Wanqing’s eyes were filled with suspicion. "Is what you’re saying really true?"

Wu Chufeng’s expression turned sharp. "Sister, believe it or not, that’s up to you. But I advise you not to dwell on this. If you behave yourself now, I can still, for the sake of our relationship as brother and sister, ensure that you and my nephew will want for nothing. But if you continue to make trouble, I will not hold back again."

Wu Wanqing was silent for a long time. ’She knew Wu Chufeng was a man of his word.’

Thinking of her young son, the light in her eyes gradually faded.

"Fine. I can stop pursuing this matter, but you must promise me you will take good care of my son from now on. You can’t let him suffer even the slightest grievance."

Wu Chufeng nodded slightly. "But of course. As long as you don’t cause any more trouble, I will certainly protect my nephew and keep him safe."

With that, he turned and strode out of the woodshed.

Wu Chufeng’s footsteps faded into the distance, and a deathly silence fell over the woodshed.

Wu Wanqing stared blankly at the doorway, as if she could still see Wu Chufeng’s cold, departing figure.

Suddenly, her legs gave out. With a THUD, she collapsed to her knees, grabbing her hair tightly with both hands and letting out a low, heart-wrenching cry, "Mumu, oh, my daughter! Your death was so cruel!"

’Wu Wanqing could never believe Wu Chufeng’s story. That brother of hers had been ruthless since he was a child.’

’Back when she and Wu Chufeng were both brought back to the Wu Family, their treatment had been vastly different.’

’She, along with Wang Cuihua’s two sons, had abused him. Her arrogant, high-and-mighty attitude back then must have earned Wu Chufeng’s resentment.’

’This was all definitely Wu Chufeng’s scheme, but now, she was completely powerless.’

"Why... why did it turn out like this..."

Wu Wanqing mumbled to herself as tears streamed down her dusty cheeks like a bursting dam.

"If... if I hadn’t abused Wu Chufeng along with them back then... if... if I hadn’t helped them lie, would things be different today?"
