Villain's Refund System: The Protagonist's Harem Is Mine
Chapter 85 Cast Out, Free
Marlowe Keep released Isolde at four in the afternoon through a side gate, with one crate of personal effects and a house steward reading an inventory aloud.
The inventory took eleven minutes, and every line of it was a thing being taken rather than returned.
’They are itemizing her life on a gravel path in front of two guards, damn, and she is standing there like a woman waiting for a carriage.’
She got her tools, since alchemy equipment registered to a practitioner cannot be seized by a house, and the steward clearly hated saying so.
She did not get the eastern beds, the laboratory, the accounts, the apartments, the annuity, or the eleven rings that had been taken from her in a cell.
"The eleven rings are recorded as house property under the marriage settlement of your grandmother," the steward read.
"Ah, the rings were mine, your inventory is a small man’s revenge, and both of us know it," Isolde answered without heat.
Damien stood at the gate beside a hired carriage without helping her carry anything, which was correct and took actual effort.
She crossed the gravel with her own crate under one arm and her chin exactly where it had been in the arena.
Vivienne spent the morning at Halcrest’s housing office being extremely Ashe toward three separate clerks, and by noon a room existed.
"Academy emergency housing, third floor of the eastern annex, registered to you rather than anybody else," she said, handing over a key.
"You went and got me a room while I was being read an inventory," Isolde replied.
"I went and got you a lease, which is a different thing, since a lease cannot be withdrawn by whoever is annoyed with you this week," Vivienne answered.
’She did it in her own name, from her own house’s leverage, without asking me first, yeah, she wanted Isolde owing that room to her rather than anybody else.’
Mina cleared the eastern annex’s disused calibration room, then spent two nights turning it into something with fume extraction plus a locking cabinet.
"Hey, it is not a laboratory, it is a room with a hood and forty percent of the ventilation you actually need," she said, "so please do not blow up my annex."
"You built a workspace for a woman you have described as a walking poison cabinet," Isolde replied.
"You are a walking poison cabinet, you also called the joints on a fate-warped ancestral construct, so we are past that," Mina answered.
Bram added her to the ward network’s supply run that same evening, quietly, with nothing in the ledger that carried her name in the open.
He handled it the way he handles everything now, quietly, using three phones, wearing a slightly hunted expression.
Isolde watched all three of them do it while Damien studied her, able to see the arithmetic happening behind her face.
’She is pricing it, yeah, she is about to state exactly what gets accepted here and what does not.’
She came to find him that night on the annex roof, where he had gone to be alone with a chest wound and a very large number of open questions.
She had a bottle, two glasses, the venom core’s severed half wrapped in her own coat like a butcher’s parcel.
"Half of that core belongs to me and I am taking it tonight," she said, setting the parcel between them, "since I called the joints, coated your blade, then fought the thing beside you."
"It is entirely yours, since the only reason I got a Reckoning into that core is four hundred years of Marlowe residue you thought of in nine seconds," Damien answered.
"Do not do that thing you just did with your voice," Isolde replied, setting her glass down hard.
"You will have to be considerably more specific, since I said about nine words," Damien said.
"Do not hand me the whole core to prove you are generous, since that turns my share into your gift, I have had enough gifts from men this year," she answered.
’Understood, stop being clever at her, damn, she has an ear for a transaction dressed as kindness.’
"Half, then, you can bill me for the other half at a rate you invent," Damien said.
"Better," Isolde replied, pouring both glasses, "so now we have the conversation you keep avoiding since the arena."
She listed what he had done, item by item, without sentiment: the tunnels, the laboratory, the bridge, the blade through his chest, eight days of a stranger’s money and blood.
Then she put the list down and looked at him over her glass with green eyes that had not been kind since the day she was born.
"You are not going to tell me what any of that was worth, since you know I would pay it and you have decided you do not want that," she said.
"I told you at the cell there was no price, meant it then, still mean it in a chair on a roof," Damien answered.
"Then here are my terms, they are not negotiable," Isolde replied. "Any gratitude I feel, I will express in the manner I choose, at the hour I choose, you will not preempt it with modesty."
’That is not gratitude, that is a schedule with my name on it, yeah, she just took the entire thing back into her own hands, which is the point.’
"Accepted on every point, with no counter-offer and no clever addition," Damien said.
"You are learning something after all, which I did not expect this month," Isolde answered, and drank.
’She is going to hold me to that for a year, yeah, she is going to enjoy every single minute of it.’
{Scene change to the Marlowe family room.}
The Marlowe house convened in the small hall an hour after the arena emptied, no formal session, attended by everybody regardless.
Evander stood at the head of the room under guard and explained the ruling to forty relatives who had watched a truth brand stay gray four times.
He explained that the girl grew confused, the compound got mislabeled, and a Sterling purchased the confession outright.
Nobody in the room interrupted, which he mistook for progress, and not one person agreed either.
His aunt Nerine, who ran the northern beds and never liked any of them, asked why the rite beast attacked a challenger first.
Evander told her the command seal failed, which was true, and explained nothing whatsoever about the four days.
Nerine asked who woke the beast early, Evander said the schedule required it, and forty relatives heard a man answer something nobody had put to him.
Oren sat at the far end of the room through all of it with his hands still and said nothing whatsoever.
He said nothing when his son finished, stayed silent while the room emptied, and offered not one word as the guards took Evander back through the eastern door.
The last three relatives out noticed that the patriarch had not once looked at his heir during the entire hour, that observation reached eleven households by morning.
{Scene change to the rooftop at midnight.}
The system posted its own note at midnight, read on the roof with the bottle empty and the city dark below.
[Divergence: 38%]
[Script Page inventory: 2 held]
[Page 1: corruption detected, 60%]
[Page 2: corruption detected, 100%, unusable]
[Purchased foreknowledge is no longer reliable. Prices unchanged.]
’They are rotting in the inventory, shit, the shop will keep selling them and the system is telling me straight out that it cannot guarantee the merchandise.’
He was still sitting there at one in the morning when Vivienne came up the roof stair with a message she had been carrying since the afternoon and clearly did not want.
"Lucas asked to speak with me privately three days ago, asked again this evening, this time he named you," she said.
