The bill for eight days came due on the fourth morning after the arena, arriving the way all his bills do, everything at once, without warning.

Damien was standing in Mina’s workshop holding a cup of tea when the first memory went, and the cup was on the floor before he understood why.

[Divergence adjustment: Marlowe sequence]

[Memory corroded: the winter examination route]

[Memory corroded: the identity of the Kestrel sponsor]

[Foreknowledge Integrity: 65% → 63%]

’Two at once, shit, and one of them was a person’s name, which means somebody out there is now a stranger who was supposed to matter.’

He reached for whatever the winter examination had been and found the shape of a corridor full of snow, nothing else inside it.

The Kestrel one was worse, since he still remembered a sponsor existing, knew it had mattered to somebody, with no detail beyond those two facts.

Mina picked up the cup, put a hand flat on his back, and asked him nothing at all, which was its own kind of mercy.

’She has learned to tell the difference between me being hurt and me losing something, damn, and there is no good version of a person learning that.’

The Script Pages went next, in the sealed inventory, without anybody touching them.

[Page 1: corruption 60% → 100%]

[Page 1: unusable]

[Page 2: collapsed]

[No refund is available for corrupted inventory.]

’Every page I own is now scrap, damn, and the shop is still listing new ones at twelve thousand points each.’

The third thing was the one he had known was coming since the fishmonger’s flat, it came at half past ten in the morning while he was walking.

The Stay of Execution spent on the safehouse assault deferred sixty percent of a very large amount, with its timer coming due during a Correction spike.

Deferred damage that lands during a spike does not land the way the skill promises, since the skill’s timing is a thing the script can touch.

It erupted through his left side and chest in the annex corridor, dropping him against a wall four meters from the workshop door.

[Deferred liability: corrupted timing]

[Damage applied: 4,100]

[HP: 8,060 → 3,960]

[Warning: reopened wound, left thoracic]

He stayed conscious for all of it, which on reflection was the worst part, though he kept quiet since noise costs air.

Mina reached him nine seconds later, emergency seal in one hand, toolroll already open, swearing in a steady technical monotone.

"Your Stay came due yesterday and it is landing today, so tell me exactly what changed," she said, getting the seal against his ribs.

’Explaining a skill I have never described to her, while bleeding, in a corridor, yeah, this is going to be a fun few minutes.’

"The script touched the timer, the deferral does not respect the count when Divergence spikes," Damien answered through his teeth.

"Man, that is a failure mode nobody in this world has written down, it just nearly killed you in a hallway," she replied.

’She is going to write it down, yeah, the writing down is the only useful thing anybody can do with this.’

Mina recorded all of it, on paper, with times: the deferral amount, the original timer, the spike window, the delay, the actual damage delivered.

She built a table by that afternoon and pinned it above the workshop bench, one column headed do not use Stay when the number is climbing.

"Right, you have been treating that skill like a loan with fixed terms, the lender turns out to rewrite the contract," she said.

"Then I price the gamble differently, take fewer of them, and stop pretending the timer belongs to me," Damien answered.

’Which removes the one tool that has carried every fight since the practical exam, damn, and there is nothing in the shop that replaces it.’

He did not say the word unfair, since the thought had genuinely never occurred to him, and Mina noticed that as well.

’Fair was never on the table, yeah, the first life ran on somebody else’s schedule too, and nobody wrote that down either.’

{Scene change to the west colonnade at four.}

Lucas waited for Vivienne in the west colonnade at four, where he meets everybody, since it is beautiful, public, full of witnesses.

He had lost weight over the past month, which nobody mentioned, with a fray on his right cuff going back a fortnight.

Dirt had started sticking to the white-and-gold coat in small amounts, brushing out easily enough, which was never necessary before.

"You get four minutes, since a training slot is waiting and my house holds opinions about my schedule," Vivienne said, stopping two meters away.

"I wanted to ask you something directly rather than through anybody else, which I understand is unusual for me," Lucas answered.

She waited, with the particular Ashe stillness that made people fill silences, he filled it.

"Damien Sterling knew where a bracket would fail on the shelf four minutes early, in writing, he knew where a breach heart was before the survey team reached it," he said, counting them off against his fingers.

"You have been sitting somewhere quiet collecting incidents about a classmate," she said.

"I have collected a year of them, every single one is public record, and none of them make sense together," Lucas replied.

Vivienne considered the colonnade, the four students pretending not to listen, the hero standing in front of her with a genuinely open face.

"Then ask me the actual question instead of reading me your evidence list," she said.

"What is he hiding, and are you safe standing next to it," Lucas answered, meaning both halves, which was the part that made it difficult.

She thought about the fishmonger’s flat, the four men on the floor, the recording crystal a hand’s width from a broker’s mouth.

She thought about a bracket, a stair, thirty-one survivors, and nine funerals paid through a grocery vault by somebody who refused the cameras.

"Neither half of that is going to get an answer from me today," Vivienne said.

"Vivienne, whatever he has told you about me, I would rather hear the correc-" Lucas started, one hand lifting toward her sleeve.

"You asked me directly and I respect that, so I am refusing you directly, which is the most honest thing available to me," she replied.

Lucas stood there with his hand half-raised in a colonnade full of students who had all, without exception, stopped pretending not to listen.

"I genuinely do not understand what changed between us this year," he said.

"Nothing changed, since you never had the thing you think you lost, which is the part you cannot follow," Vivienne answered, leaving for her training slot.

Four students posted about it within the hour, and by evening the clip of a golden boy standing alone in a colonnade had forty thousand views.

Lucas walked back across the quad afterward, rain starting partway, and for the first time in his life it did not miss him.

{Scene change to the workshop at nine that evening.}

Damien was still on the workshop cot at nine that evening, breathing carefully, when the system opened an entry it never shows without reason.

[Death Flag: The Finale - Fatality 100%]

[Position: advanced]

’Advanced, shit, that line has sat at the bottom of the list since Chapter one, and tonight it moved toward me.’

He asked what caused it, which he does perhaps four times a year, the system neither stalled nor declined.

[Cause: unresolved.]

’Unresolved means it does not know, damn, or it means the cause has not finished happening yet.’

Vivienne came into the workshop at ten with her cape over one arm and rain still in her hair, sitting down beside the cot uninvited.

"Lucas asked me about you this afternoon, out in the colonnade with witnesses standing around us, I am telling you before you hear it from anybody else," she said.
