The Marlowe ancestral arena sat forty meters below the Keep’s east wing, a stone bowl older than the house that owned it, with a feeding channel running under one wall.

A thousand people filled the gallery by seven in the morning, every branch of the family plus four rival houses invited to watch a matter settled.

’They filled the seats before dawn, damn, this stopped being a judgment three days ago and became an audience event.’

Isolde stood chained at the arena’s center with her wrists cuffed to a floor ring and her chin up, wearing the same clothes she had been arrested in.

She had refused the ceremonial rite-shift, forcing the house to execute her in the clothes of a woman dragged out of an academy courtyard.

Damien came down the eastern gallery stair at seven fifteen with blood soaking his coat’s left side and Feyn six steps behind him carrying a scroll case.

He had spent the last of the safehouse refund on the ride across the city, one-handed in a rocking carriage, buying the only things a man can carry into a poison pit.

[Emergency antivenom, tier three: 6,400]

[Tempering: coat lining, venom-resistant weave: 3,200]

[Field medical charges, four: 2,800]

[System Points: 50,100 → 37,700]

’Forty-seven thousand arrived last night and twelve of them are already gone, yeah, and I would spend the rest for nine more minutes.’

The warrant officer from the courtyard reached the stair mouth first, and to the man’s credit he did not draw anything.

"Hmm, the rite has commenced and this pit closed to observers twenty minutes ago," he said.

"I am not an observer, since I filed an outside challenger’s notice eight days ago and this house admitted it," Damien answered.

Oren’s voice came down from the family box without any effort at all, in a bowl built four hundred years ago to carry exactly one man’s voice.

"The notice stands, so let him in, and let every viewing crystal in this arena stay live until the rite concludes," Oren said, without once raising his voice.

’He wants it recorded, yeah, and I still cannot tell whether the recording is meant for me or his son.’

Evander stood at the channel gate with the release lever already in his hand, he pulled it four seconds before the challenge could be formally read.

The venom beast came out of the wall the way water leaves a broken main.

Forty feet of segmented body, dark green plated over black, its head having stopped resembling one sometime in the fourth century.

[Eye of Reckoning: Ancestral rite beast, venom lineage]

[Level: 1,180]

[Aspect category: containment, hereditary]

[Warning: command seal inactive]

[Death Flag detected: The ancestral rite - Fatality 96%]

[Survive.]

’Twelve hundred, the seal is dead, shit, this thing is not answering the house, which means somebody fed it something it should not have eaten.’

Damien went over the gallery rail rather than around to the gate, took nine meters of drop on a bad leg, then hit the arena floor between Isolde and the beast.

The chain ring at her wrists was Marlowe forge work with rite-locked cuffs, meaning they opened for the patriarch and nobody else alive.

"Ah, finally, the man arrives twenty minutes into my own execution, covered in somebody else’s blood," Isolde said.

"The traffic was appalling and four professionals tried to kill my witness at three in the morning," Damien answered, putting Verdict through the floor ring’s anchor bolt.

The ring came out of the stone, which freed her from the floor without freeing her hands, she rose onto her feet beside him.

"Tch, do not stand in front of me like the others did," she said, "since I have spent eight days being the thing everybody watches die."

"Then stand where you can reach my blade, since your hands still work and I have no antivenom left," Damien replied.

Isolde laughed once in a way that reached the gallery, held out her cuffed wrists, and asked for exactly nine seconds.

She got them from the ring nobody took, the plain band on her left hand the house had judged empty and harmless.

It had never once been empty, since it carried the single compound Marlowe refuses to key into a signet, the family assuming no daughter of theirs would need it.

She broke the seal against her thumb, ran the contents down the flat of Verdict from guard to point, leaving the blade wet and faintly green.

[Weapon coating applied: Marlowe hereditary reagent]

[Effect: containment-lineage tissue destabilized]

’She had it the whole time in the ring they let her keep, damn, they searched her six times and never once considered that she is better at this than they are.’

The beast came for Damien rather than the chained woman, which was the wrong target under every rite this house ever ran.

It came for him through the standing ceremonial stones, over the channel wall, ignoring the command seal a Marlowe steward was frantically re-striking from the gate.

"That thing takes the accused first, always, it has never once broken a rite in four centuries," Isolde said, moving with him along the wall.

’Never once in four hundred years, and today it wants the challenger, yeah, and there is exactly one force in this world that rewrites what a thing is for.’

"Then your rite is corrupted, and everyone in that gallery is now watching it happen," Damien answered.

The first exchange cost him a shoulder plate plus thirteen hundred points of health, opening the Blood Ledger at a number he had never begun a fight with.

[Debt: 0 → 412]

[Interest: ×1.2 per exchange]

Silver Rain went into the plating four times and found nothing worth finding, until Isolde’s reagent reached the same joint on the second pass.

The plate came away like wet paper, and forty feet of ancestral construct made a sound that the arena’s oldest members had never heard in their lives.

’The coating works, yeah, so this is not my fight with her standing behind me, this is our fight and she is the reason it has a shape.’

They found a rhythm inside ninety seconds, unrehearsed, recognized instantly by both.

Damien opened plate with the saber, took the counters on his own body while the Ledger filled off every impact, as Isolde moved along the wall reading which segment would soften next.

She called the joints for him to cut, while the beast paid dearly on every attempt to reach them without once deciding to stop.

’She has never fought beside anyone in her life and she is already three cuts ahead of me, damn, they had her scheduled to die as scenery.’

[Debt: 412 → 986]

[Debt: 986 → 1,431]

[Warning: approaching cap]

The cap stood at fourteen hundred and sixty now, moved by Level 806, so Damien held redline while the whole gallery went silent.

’Twenty-nine points under the ceiling, in front of four rival houses, on a leg that stopped working an hour ago, okay, that will do.’

Reckoning released at the beast’s fourth segment with the tally gone full gold and Verdict’s conductance riding the reagent straight into the wound.

[RECKONING - 1,431 Debt × 2.0 = 2,862]

[Verdict conductance +20% = 3,434]

The strike took the ancestral rite beast apart across fourteen meters of arena floor, the head came down four feet from the family box’s lowest rail.

A thousand people made no sound whatsoever for three full seconds.

Then somebody in the fourth tier started shouting, the sound of a house realizing it has just watched its own judgment die filled the bowl.

’It is finished, okay, get her cuffs read out, then Celene into the hall, then myself out of this pit before the leg gives.’

Damien turned toward the gate with Isolde three steps behind, then Blank came out of his coat screaming.

The creature had never made that sound, it made it directly at the beast’s corpse, with its edges gone so sharp they looked cut from tin.

The black-gold core inside the fourth segment cracked open on its own, the dead thing began pulling itself back together around it into something with a great deal more head.

[Correction core detected: rite beast]

[Second form: initializing]

Damien got Isolde behind the ceremonial stones, put his back to them, and looked at a ledger reading zero with a very large problem standing up.
