Villain's Refund System: The Protagonist's Harem Is Mine
Chapter 82 Night Ledger
They arrived at ten past three, doing it correctly, which was the first thing telling Damien these were not house blades.
Two went to the roof, three took the stairwell, and one put a splitting charge against the fishmonger’s back wall to open a second front nobody had to fight through.
’Textbook, paid, and rehearsed, damn, Evander bought professionals and gave them the building plans.’
The charge blew the back wall at three eleven, its whole purpose being to separate the man with a saber from the woman whose signature mattered.
Damien let them separate him, since that was the only way to learn what the second team was for.
[Debt: 0 → 84]
The stairwell three came up fast beneath a hooked shield line, into a corridor too narrow for Silver Rain and exactly right otherwise.
He took the lead man’s shield arm at the elbow with the saber’s guard, put a knee through the second man’s floating ribs, and used the third one’s own hook to open his thigh.
None of it was dueling. The commentary desk had spent a semester calling it gutter fighting, and in a fishmonger’s stairwell at three in the morning it was simply correct.
Vivienne held the landing above him, the first time they ever fought on one stair rather than the same battlefield.
Her Mirror-Edge forms built a lattice across the top four steps that nothing entered without losing something, worked to a rhythm Damien could hear.
"Give me the Stay interval before you take that one, and give me the count out loud," she said.
"Four seconds from the word now, and do not enter early," Damien answered, putting the skill up in front of a strike he had no business taking.
[Stay of Execution active]
[Deferred: 60%]
[Timer: 11 seconds]
She moved into the space his body should not have survived, cut the man who made the strike across both wrists, and was gone before the counter arrived.
They did that four times in ninety seconds, and by the fourth Damien understood that she had been reading his timings for weeks without mentioning it.
[Deferred liability queued: 4,100]
’She knows when the deferral lands, yeah, she has been counting my Stays from the gallery since the tournament.’
Mina held the back room with three deployed barriers and a doorframe she had spent forty minutes converting into a weapon.
The two roof men came down through the ceiling into a room with a residue charge seeded under the floorboards, and neither of them got up.
"Hey, the witness is intact, my barriers are down to sixty percent, and I have exactly one charge left," she called through the wall.
’One charge and a doorframe against however many are still outside, damn, and she has not once asked me to come get her.’
"Then hold what you have and do not spend it on anybody wearing a house crest," Damien answered.
The last four came in together through the broken back wall, going for Celene rather than him, which finally answered the question.
[Death Flag: Safehouse assault - Fatality 84%]
[Primary target: witness]
[Survive.]
The blade meant for Celene had started its thrust before Damien reached the doorway, and no version of that geometry ended with him arriving in time to block it.
So he stopped trying to block, put his own body between the point and the woman, taking it through the left side of his chest at full extension.
[Damage taken: 3,900]
[HP: 7,420 → 3,520]
[Debt: 84 → 1,190]
The man who made the thrust got one full second to understand his target had not gone down, and spent it looking at Damien’s face.
Then Damien released Dread Presence, the fishmonger’s flat stopped being a building where four professionals had the advantage.
The title’s weight went out through the walls, black-red along Verdict’s tally, and every prey instinct in that room fired at once.
One of them knelt on the floorboards, another went for the window without reaching the frame, the two who kept coming had enough discipline to die a little later than the others.
Reckoning ended it with the ledger nearly full, though Damien stopped at neither three nor four.
[RECKONING - 1,190 Debt × 2.0 = 2,380]
[Verdict conductance +20% = 2,856]
He left the man who had knelt alive on the floor with a broken elbow and a recording crystal running eleven inches from his mouth.
"Name the contract holder, say it once, I will let a registrar write down that you cooperated," Damien said.
"It was Evander Marlowe through a broker on the eastern quay, paid in Marlowe house script," the man answered.
’House script, spoken onto a recording, with a registrar’s number stamped into the crystal, yeah, none of that convicts anybody at a tribunal, it convicts a son in front of his father.’
Vivienne stood in the ruined doorway with both blades still out and watched all of it, from the kneeling to the recording, without one word.
She had watched him fight plenty of times, though never once watched him finish, the academy’s whispers never quite managed to convey that difference.
’And now she has watched me do it in a room with the lights on, yeah, this is where she decides.’
She cleaned her short blade on a fallen man’s coat, sheathed both weapons, and came to stand at his shoulder facing the door rather than facing him.
’She did not lecture me or flinch or put a step between us, yeah, she picked the side of the room that watches the entrance, which is her entire answer.’
Nine months ago this woman had been scheduled to annul him in front of four hundred people and then spend a year being pleasant to somebody else.
Tonight she was standing in a fishmonger’s flat with a stranger’s blood on her cape, guarding a door for a man the whole city called the villain.
"Your left side is open and you are still standing on that leg out of habit," Vivienne said.
"A bad knee is the entire commentary you have prepared for me tonight," Damien answered.
"I have commentary, none of it concerns the four men, and all of it waits until the witness is on a barge," she replied.
’She is staying, damn, she is not going to pretend she liked what she saw, which is somehow better.’
The refund posted while Mina was cutting his coat away from the chest wound, the numbers took a moment to become believable.

’Forty-seven thousand, yeah, the story sent four professionals to erase the confession, so the story just bought me the arena.’
Celene sat on the floor against the back-room wall with her hands over her mouth, looking at the hole in the chest of a man who had taken her blade.
"And you did not take that blade for me, so do not let anybody tell it that way," she said.
"I took it for the confession, you can decide what that makes me on your own time," Damien answered.
"Then I will say it under the brand, standing in that hall where my father and my brother can hear it," Celene replied.
Mina got the wound sealed by four, then the barge left the eastern quay at five carrying a witness, a custody case and Bram’s aunt’s supplier steering.
Damien was still on the quay watching it go when the relay charm lit with Feyn’s voice, and Feyn was running.
"They moved the rite forward to this morning and she is being chained into the arena right now," he said, "with the beast sitting in that feeding channel since four."
The reason arrived in the same breath, since Evander had heard about the safehouse before dawn and understood exactly what a living witness on a barge was worth.
A confession means nothing from a woman who arrives after the ruling, and no beast’s judgment can be appealed to anybody at all.
’He is racing the barge, shit, he does not need to win the argument, he only needs Isolde dead before Celene walks through the door.’
’Four days became four hours while I was bleeding on a quay, shit, move, right now, and do not stop to think about the leg.’
