Chapter 116- The Supervising Committee
"AGH!" The boy cried from sheer fear as he stopped and fell back onto his back. He stared up, his face pale and his heart racing. All he could see was a dark silhouette of a tall and broad man. Just his mere presence there sent every single rational thought out of the boy’s mind. It was as if he was seeing the reaper of death manifesting before him to harvest his life, and that fear was further amplified by the fact that he had just killed someone with his bare hands.
He had killed an innocent person because of his own stupidity.
"Candidate Imar. You must come with me." The man stared at the boy coldly as he said those words, cutting through the silence and the distant echoes of cries for help coming from down there.
"... W-Who are you?"
"I am a member of the committee supervising this test, and we suspect that you have breached one of our rules. You must come with me for further investigation."
"W-W-What, no, please listen... I didn’t know... I didn’t mean to push him off the building! He was... He was fighting me, and I didn’t notice that he was that close to the edge!" The boy named Imar yelled desperately.
However, the man didn’t care as he stepped forward. The boy dragged his body back, his eyes wide open, and he was breathing desperately.
"Please! Please!!! I really didn’t mean to!"
"Sir, please cooperate and don’t make me use other methods." The man said. "Our rules are very clear and precise; you were notified of what you are allowed to do and what you must avoid. What you do beyond that is entirely your responsibility."
Realizing the possible outcome of all of this, a sickening feeling settled in Imar’s stomach as he started crying and screaming.
"No!! I don’t want to be left out! Please!!! I don’t want to be eliminated! Not like this!!" He cried loudly. However, the man didn’t care, as he grabbed his arm and pulled him up before dragging him away while the boy cried.
Meanwhile, down on the ground. The candidates who surrounded the boy tried to inspect him or revive him.
"No... He’s... dead." One said as they pulled their hands away. "He died on the spot..."
The words fell on the silent crowd like a guillotine. They forgot about the initial test and the badges; they forgot what they were even doing merely a few moments ago, and a feeling of dread fell on their heads.
They thought the academy tests weren’t lethal. They thought that they would never face anything life-threatening when they came here. Yet, here they are, staring at a dead body. Someone had died before their eyes.
"Did you expect something like this to happen?" Rize asked as he peeked over the shoulder at the dead body. Rose sighed as she turned away to scan the area.
"Yeah, to a certain degree. There are too many people here for something like this not to happen." She replied. "We will probably see more of it as the test continues."
Just as she finished those words, several individuals suddenly appeared near the candidates. Two men and women, clad in white clothes akin to those of medics. They all rushed to the group and pushed them away.
"Please clear the area." They said in a calm tone. "We will take care of this matter."
The candidates stepped back as they watched the medics inspect the body before they put it on a stretcher, then picked it up and disappeared as quickly as they appeared. Many watched them for a while and then stood there, still in shock from what happened.
It appeared as if the medics were ready for this and didn’t even react whatsoever upon seeing it.
"What a weird bunch," Rize muttered as he scratched his head. "Are you still going to stand there, Miss Rose?"
"..." Rose looked at the spot where the body was and then at Rize. ’Judging from his reaction, this is probably not his first rodeo. He had seen dead people before... Perhaps he even killed a few of his own.’
Rose had a sense for people who find killing normal. There was something in their eyes that was simply not right. After all, killing another human being changes you in ways that you yourself can’t fathom. The look they give is different; how they behave is different, and most importantly... How they react when they see dead people.
Rize was one of those kinds of people, and that only intrigued Rose about him more. Who is he? Where did he come from? And how did he end up in such an important position?
Many things were shrouded in mystery about this boy, and Rose, being a seeker of things that seem intriguing, found Rize as a perfect target for her endless curiosity."
"Let’s go," Rize said. ’Where are you, Venera? Tsk, why is it so hard to find her?’
***
Meanwhile, a good distance away from the scene, in one of the many buildings of the city, Venera was busy dealing with a group of candidates. She had been exploring the area for a bit, and they ended up ambushing her, which caused her to derail her path.
"Please... Please wait! We are sorry! We are so sorry!" The last candidate fell back as they saw their friends on the ground, crying in pain. Meanwhile, a girl with her head covered under a hood walked toward him. An entire group of 8 individuals was decimated in a minute. They couldn’t do anything to her.
She turned to look at the boy before she walked up to him until he was pressed against the wall, his body shaking.
"I’m not in the mood right now." She said. "Give me the badge and scram."
Her words made him nod instantly. The air of authority around her made him instinctively pull his badge and throw it to her.
"Please, don’t beat me up; I don’t want any of this!" He said.
Venera grabbed the badge and then looked at it. "I said scram."
The boy instantly stood up and ran away like a rat. Venera sighed as she put the badge away and looked outside. ’I’ve lost Rize completely. I know he will be completely fine... But it’s still annoying.’
For some reason, not having that boy next to her ruined her mood. Something about his presence always gave her a breath of life that nobody else does. She just liked his reassuring existence.
Now, she had to either find him or wait till the test was over. Either way, it was not an ideal situation.
Looking outside, she saw countless more people fighting. She had a lot of work to do so as not to fall behind.
With that, she turned around to leave the building. Rushing down to the bottom floor, she walked out into the street. Then, her eyes scanned the area around her, searching for a new target. However, almost immediately, her eyes fell on an individual... or rather, a group of people being led by one singular person.
"Is that...?" She frowned.
The last person she wanted to see had appeared before her.
