Versatile System
Chapter 194: the outer boarder
First light found the unit already at the southern gate. Trevor stood at the head of the formation in full gear. The seven women held their positions without needing direction. Rhea and Lisa on point. Vespera and Seraphine on the flanks. Mia and Caroline center with him. Elena at the rear. The permanent Frostbound crest sat clean on every piece of armor. The network hummed at full saturation, every presence sharp and immediate.
A Guild clerk checked their designation against the escort contract and waved them through. The merchant convoy waited just beyond the gate: six heavy wagons under standard protective runes, twelve civilian drivers and guards, and two mid-tier Guild observers assigned to log the movement. The listed threat level remained low to moderate. Trevor treated it as higher until the route proved otherwise.
He spoke once through the network.
"Standard formation. We take the left flank of the convoy. Keep the wagons inside the bubble. No one breaks for a kill unless the network flags a direct threat to the civilians. Link primary. Verbal only if it drops."
Seven clean acknowledgments returned.
The convoy rolled out under the rising sun. The outer wards stretched in a long, reinforced curve along the city's southern edge. Beyond them the land dropped into uneven scrub and old secondary dungeon scars. Residual monster activity was common enough that escort contracts existed for a reason. Most days the activity stayed light. Most days were not guarantees.
The first hour passed clean. The network shared threat vectors, residual essence density, and structural readings from the ward line in real time. No active signatures rose above background. The civilian drivers kept their pace steady. The Guild observers recorded the movement without comment.
Trevor kept the unit in tight order. He felt the first anomaly through the ambient essence twelve minutes into the second hour. A low, irregular pulse along the outer edge of the ward line, too structured to be random residual activity and too faint for standard sensors to flag yet. The network carried the reading to every member at once.
He adjusted the formation half a step closer to the convoy without a spoken word. Rhea and Lisa tightened the point. Vespera and Seraphine began low cycling of their aspects, cold and light held in reserve. Mia's barriers stayed ready but unformed. Caroline and Elena shifted their attention to the scrub line beyond the wards.
The pulse strengthened.
Three long, low shapes of hardened earth and shadow residue pulled themselves out of a collapsed secondary scar fifty meters beyond the ward line. They were larger than the residual stalkers from the collapsed B-rank site, better coordinated, and already moving toward the convoy with clear intent. Behind them a fourth signature remained half-buried, heavier, slower, and still gathering residual essence.
Trevor's command moved through the link.
"Point engages the lead three. Flanks support. Center holds the convoy bubble. Rear watches for the fourth. No one crosses the ward line unless forced."
Rhea and Lisa met the first two as they reached the outer edge of the wards. Their blades cut in tight parallel arcs, each covering the micro-gaps the other left. Vespera's cold pulse flash-froze the third long enough for Seraphine's light lance to punch through its core. The constructs collapsed into inert earth and fading shadow before they could fully clear the ward boundary.
The fourth signature finished rising.
It was larger than the others, fused from denser residual material, and already bleeding a low essence-drain field that tugged at the edges of the network. Trevor felt the drain register across every linked mind at once. He did not let it settle.
"Center advances to the ward edge. Full pattern on the large one. Keep the convoy moving."
Mia layered a short-duration barrier over the nearest wagon as residual drain washed across the line. Caroline and Elena struck the construct's forward limbs the moment Rhea and Lisa forced it to commit weight. Vespera and Seraphine worked the joints with alternating pulses, creating the micro-fractures the others needed. Trevor stepped into the opening, drove his blade through the primary core cluster, and severed the drain field at its source.
The construct collapsed.
Total engagement time: under forty seconds. No civilian injuries. No unit injuries. Essence expenditure across the network remained under ten percent.
The Guild observers recorded the engagement without comment. The convoy continued without slowing. Trevor kept the formation tight until the residual signatures along the remaining route dropped back to background levels.
The rest of the escort passed clean. Two smaller residual packs appeared near the midpoint and were cut down in seconds. No further heavy signatures rose. By the time the convoy reached the designated handover point the sun was well clear of the horizon and the listed duration had been met with time to spare.
The Guild clerk at the handover post confirmed completion, logged the operational credit, and released them. Payment would process within the hour.
Trevor led the unit back toward the city in the same tight formation. No one spoke until the southern gate sealed behind them and the streets closed in.
They returned to the residence under full wards. The door locked. The outer seals engaged. Trevor projected the engagement data for the team once.
"Residual activity along the southern ward line is higher than the listed threat level. The fourth construct carried a structured drain field that standard sensors would have flagged late. The network caught it early. That information stays internal unless the Guild requests it. Contract is complete. Operational history updated."
Rhea cracked her neck. "If the residual activity is climbing, the next escort contracts will get harder."
"Correct," Trevor said. "We do not chase additional escort work until the slate updates and the picture is clearer. For now we recover, refine, and wait for the next viable contract that does not place us on the open wards again without better data."
He dismissed the projection.
"Full medical check. Essence recovery. Gear inspection. Light refinement only for the rest of the day. No external contact beyond official channels."
The team moved into the familiar post-contract rhythm. Elena and Caroline ran the scans. Lisa and Rhea checked blades and armor seals. Vespera and Seraphine withdrew to settle their aspects. Mia organized the residual stabilizers. Trevor remained in the main room and opened the private system interface.
Contract complete.
Operational history: second entry logged.
Southern ward residual activity: elevated. Structured drain field confirmed.
Network Synchronization: one hundred percent.
Mark Depth: maximum.
He closed the window.
The escort had been clean on the surface. The residual activity along the ward line was not. Something older was stirring in the secondary scars beyond the city, the same way something older had stirred under the collapsed B-rank site. The Guild would notice eventually. Other units that ran the southern wards would notice sooner.
Trevor settled into a light combat rest, the network still humming at the edge of his awareness.
The second contract under permanent status was finished.
The pressure from outside the lock had not gone away. Iron Veil was still quiet. The Hunters organization was still undecided. The residual activity beyond the wards was no longer background noise.
Something was waking in the old scars around the city.
Frostbound had already walked through two of its early signs.
The next one would not wait politely for a contract slate to update.
