Chapter 193: the fall out of the anomaly

  • Next Chapter

The Guild’s response to the anomaly data arrived before nightfall.

A formal courier delivered a sealed packet under priority markings. Trevor accepted it at the door, dismissed the escort, and projected the contents for the unit the moment the wards locked again.

The packet was short and direct. The observation contract was confirmed complete. Payment and operational history credit had already processed. The residual energy signature Frostbound had flagged did not match any recorded profile for that sector. A higher-tier assessment team would be assigned within the next two days. Until that assessment was finished the collapsed site and its immediate surroundings were restricted. No further contracts would be issued in the northern training sector without explicit Overseer approval.

Trevor closed the projection.

“We did the work. The anomaly is no longer our problem unless the Guild decides otherwise. The restriction means the eastern sector allocation becomes more valuable. We use it for controlled training runs once I authorize the first one. Until then we stay inside the city and watch the next contract slate.”

Rhea nodded. Lisa simply accepted the information. The others settled into the same quiet readiness they had carried since the Ice Forge. The network carried the collective understanding without further discussion.

Evening settled over the sealed residence. Essence reserves had already recovered from the short contract. Medical scans remained clean. The new stabilizers and filter upgrades continued to perform above baseline. Trevor kept the team on light internal refinement only. No deep mark work. No unnecessary expenditure. The saturation achieved before the Ice Forge still held at absolute maximum. There was no need to push it further until the operational picture demanded it.

Night passed without external contact. Two remained on watch. The others rested. The network stayed open, every presence accounted for, every mark still steady.

Morning brought the first update to the contract slate.

Trevor projected the new listings the moment they appeared on the unit channel. Three fresh options had opened for locked units of Frostbound’s current ranking. The first was another standard mid-tier clear, this time in a stable C-rank site on the western edge. Low risk. Modest payment. Useful only for padding operational history. The second was a joint resource recovery task inside a partially cleared B-rank dungeon already under Guild control. Payment was higher. The listed partner units included one that had shared the registry hall with them and shown no prior hostility. The third was a short-duration escort and observation contract along the outer city wards during a scheduled merchant convoy movement. Payment sat between the other two. Politics were lighter than a joint patrol with Iron Veil, but the route passed close to several older unit territories.

Trevor studied the options in silence for half a minute.

“We decline the standard clear. It teaches nothing. The joint recovery task is viable if the partner unit remains neutral. The escort contract keeps us mobile and visible without committing to another unit’s internal dynamics. We take the escort when the window opens. It builds history, keeps the network under light field load, and avoids the northern sector restriction entirely.”

No one disagreed. The decision locked into the unit channel.

Trevor filed the formal acceptance before the midday meal. Confirmation returned within the hour. The escort window would open the following morning. Departure from the southern gate at first light. Expected duration under four hours. Residual threat level listed as low to moderate.

The rest of the day passed under the same controlled schedule. Light refinement. Full medical checks. Gear inspection against the escort parameters. Continuous network monitoring. No external contact beyond the official channel.

Late afternoon the outer wards registered an approach.

Trevor rose, checked the identity, and went to the door alone. The others stayed inside in formation readiness. The visitor was a formal Guild clerk this time, carrying a secondary sealed note rather than a full packet. Trevor took it, dismissed the clerk, and returned inside.

The note was brief. The higher-tier assessment team assigned to the anomaly had requested the original observation data package Frostbound had submitted, along with any additional private system readings the unit was willing to share. The request was framed as voluntary. The tone made clear that cooperation would be noted favorably.

Trevor projected the note.

“They already have the official data. They want whatever the network recorded beyond the standard sensors. We can decline without penalty. We can also provide a cleaned summary that confirms the anomaly without exposing full network architecture. I lean toward the cleaned summary. It costs us nothing and removes one possible point of future friction.”

Mia spoke for the first time that day. “If they are already looking closer at the signature, they will keep looking whether we help or not.”

“Correct,” Trevor said. “Better they look with the information we choose to give them than with questions about why we withheld it.”

He drafted the cleaned summary himself. The document confirmed the residual energy density, the mismatch with the original dungeon signature, and the low-level ongoing activity inside the fissure. It omitted every detail of how the network had detected the anomaly three full seconds earlier than standard sensors and how the multi-mark link had shared the reading instantly across eight minds. The summary was accurate, limited, and final.

Trevor sent it through the official channel before evening. Acknowledgment returned within minutes. No further request followed. ℴ

Night settled again. The escort contract sat less than twelve hours away. Trevor gathered the team one final time and projected the route parameters.

“Southern gate at first light. Formation holds the entire movement. Rhea and Lisa on point. Vespera and Seraphine on flanks. Mia and Caroline center with me. Elena rear and medical. Link primary. The listed threat level is low to moderate, which means we treat it as higher until the route proves otherwise. We complete the escort, log the operational credit, and return. No deviations. No side engagements. Questions?”

There were none.

The house moved into final pre-contract rhythm. Armor seals were checked. Beacons were synchronized. Essence stabilizers were rationed for field use. Two remained on watch. The others rested. The network stayed open at absolute saturation.

Trevor remained in the main room after the others had withdrawn. He opened the private system interface one last time.

Contract accepted: outer ward escort.

Departure: first light.

Anomaly status: higher-tier assessment underway. Cleaned data package delivered.

External pressures: Iron Veil still quiet. Hunters organization still undecided.

Network Synchronization: one hundred percent.

Mark Depth: maximum.

He closed the window.

The first observation contract had drawn higher-tier eyes to an older energy signature buried under a collapsed site. The cleaned summary had been delivered. The next contract would put Frostbound on the open wards in full view of every unit that still wanted to test the lock.

Trevor settled into a light combat rest, the network still humming at the edge of his awareness.

First light would come soon.

When it did, the unit would step out of the sealed residence for the second time under permanent status.

Whatever was waiting on the outer wards would meet the same single organism that had walked out of the Ice Forge.
