Versatile System
Chapter 195: tye political pressure is rising
The elevated residual readings from the southern ward line reached the Guild before the day was over.
A priority packet arrived under formal courier in the late afternoon. Trevor accepted it at the door, dismissed the escort, and projected the contents the moment the wards locked.
The packet confirmed receipt of the escort completion data. Payment and operational history credit had already processed. More importantly, the structured drain field Frostbound had flagged during the engagement had been cross-referenced against the anomaly under the collapsed B-rank site. The two signatures shared enough residual markers that the higher-tier assessment team had expanded its scope. All secondary scars along the southern and northern ward lines were now under temporary observation. No new escort or recovery contracts would be issued in those sectors until the assessment produced a clearer threat profile.
Trevor closed the projection.
“The Guild is connecting the two readings. That is expected. The restriction means the eastern training sector becomes the only clean allocation we currently hold. We use it for controlled runs once I authorize the first one. Until the assessment finishes we stay off the open wards and off the restricted scars.”
Rhea nodded once. Lisa accepted the information without comment. The others settled into the same quiet readiness the network had carried since the Ice Forge. No one needed the implications explained.
Evening settled over the sealed residence. Essence reserves had recovered fully from the short escort. Medical scans remained clean. The new stabilizers continued to perform above baseline. Trevor kept the team on light internal refinement only. The mark saturation achieved before the Ice Forge still held at absolute maximum. There was no operational need to push deeper work yet.
Night passed without external contact. Two remained on watch. The others rested. The network stayed open, every presence accounted for, every mark steady.
Morning brought an update from the unit channel rather than a courier.
Trevor projected the new listing the moment it appeared. The eastern training sector allocation had been formally activated for Frostbound’s use. Controlled F-rank and C-rank runs were authorized under unit discretion. A short note attached to the activation stated that any residual signatures matching the southern or northern anomaly profile were to be reported immediately through official channels. No independent deeper investigation was permitted.
Trevor studied the note for several seconds.
“We take the eastern sector tomorrow. Controlled C-rank run. Same formation parameters we used for Blackroot Hollow. The goal is refinement under load and confirmation that the sector remains clean of the older signatures. If anything matching the anomaly profile appears we mark it, extract, and report. No extended engagement.”
The decision locked into the network without discussion.
The rest of the day passed under the same controlled schedule. Light refinement. Full medical checks. Gear inspection against the eastern sector parameters. Continuous monitoring. No external contact beyond the official channel.
Late afternoon the outer wards registered an approach.
Trevor rose, checked the identity through the unit channel, and went to the door alone. The others stayed inside in formation readiness. The visitor was not Guild. He wore the muted colors of a mid-tier information broker, the same one who had delivered the earlier unsigned note about Iron Veil. He did not attempt to cross the wards. He simply held out a sealed envelope and waited.
Trevor took it, dismissed the man with a look, and returned inside. The door sealed. He broke the seal in front of the team and projected the contents.
The message was short and again unsigned. It stated that Iron Veil had taken note of Frostbound’s clean completion of both the observation contract and the southern escort. They were no longer discussing simple resource priority. They were discussing whether a new locked unit with a perfect Ice Forge record and early operational success needed closer pressure before it climbed further in the provisional rankings. The message also noted that the Hunters organization had moved from internal discussion to quiet outreach among mid-tier Guild contacts, testing whether any procedural leverage remained around Caroline’s prior assignment.
Trevor closed the projection.
“Information only. No formal move has been made. Iron Veil is shifting from procedural probes to the possibility of direct pressure. The Hunters organization is still looking for a soft point that does not exist. We do not react to rumors. We react to formal filings or direct action at the wards. Until either appears we continue the current schedule.”
Caroline’s expression stayed level, but the network carried the familiar sharp spike of old pressure beneath the calm. Trevor met her eyes once.
“The lock holds. You stay here. If either party moves outside official channels the network will register it and we will answer accordingly.”
She gave a single nod.
Night settled again. The eastern sector run sat less than twelve hours away. Trevor gathered the team one final time and projected the sector layout.
“First light. Controlled C-rank. Formation holds the entire movement. Rhea and Lisa on point. Vespera and Seraphine on flanks. Mia and Caroline center with me. Elena rear and medical. Link primary. We refine under load, confirm the sector is clean of older signatures, and extract. No deviations. Questions?”
There were none.
The house moved into final pre-run rhythm. Armor seals were checked. Beacons were synchronized. Essence stabilizers were rationed for field use. Two remained on watch. The others rested. The network stayed open at absolute saturation.
Trevor remained in the main room after the others had withdrawn. He opened the private system interface one last time.
Eastern sector run: authorized for first light.
Anomaly status: higher-tier assessment expanded. Southern and northern scars under observation.
External pressures: Iron Veil shifting toward direct pressure. Hunters organization conducting quiet outreach.
Network Synchronization: one hundred percent.
Mark Depth: maximum.
He closed the window.
The Guild was connecting the residual signatures. Iron Veil was deciding how hard to push a new unit that refused to yield ranking or resources. The Hunters organization was still searching for leverage that the system bond had already erased. Something older continued to stir in the scars beyond the wards.
Trevor settled into a light combat rest, the network still humming at the edge of his awareness.
First light would come soon.
When it did, Frostbound would step into the eastern sector as a permanent locked unit for the first time under full operational authority.
Whatever was waking in the old scars, and whatever the other units decided to do about the new designation that refused to bend, would meet the same single organism that had walked out of the Ice Forge and completed every contract since.
The quiet refinement phase was ending.
The next pressure would not arrive politely through official channels.
