Versatile System
Chapter 185 - 10 seconds to extraction
A partial collapse ahead forced them into a side chamber filled with residual cold constructs—smaller, faster, more numerous. Twelve of them. The fight lasted just under three minutes. Clean. Coordinated. No injuries. Essence expenditure was higher than preferred, but still within tolerance.
They exited the chamber and kept descending.
[Survival Timer: 00:52:41]
Trevor checked the network.
Every presence remained sharp. No fractures. No panic. Mark saturation still absolute. The system's projected survival probability held at maximum under current parameters, but the margin was narrowing. The cold was winning a slow war of attrition.
Twenty-seven minutes remained when they entered the next major space—a wide, frozen hall under a ceiling of hanging spears that trembled with every step. Ancient runes glowed faintly in the walls. Something large shifted in the far dark.
Trevor's voice moved through the link.
"Standard formation. No heroics. Keep the timer running."
They advanced.
The Ice Forge still had time to kill them.
They still had time to refuse.
The wide frozen hall did not stay empty for long.
Something large shifted in the far dark—an ancient construct of black ice and residual runes, twice the height of a man, heavily armored, carrying a blade of pure frost that hummed with essence-draining power. Smaller shapes peeled from the walls to support it. The ceiling spears trembled harder.
[Survival Timer: 00:53:18]
Trevor's command was immediate and flat.
"Full pattern. Kill the support first. Do not commit to the large one unless forced. Keep moving after."
Rhea and Lisa engaged the frontal wave of smaller constructs, blades working in tight parallel arcs. Vespera and Seraphine shattered the flanking ones with rapid alternating pulses. Mia's barriers absorbed two heavy residual frost blasts that would have broken formation. Caroline and Elena struck every opening the moment it appeared. Trevor himself cut down the three that tried to circle from above.
The large construct advanced through the wreckage of its support, frost blade rising.
Trevor did not meet it head-on.
"Flank and fracture. No prolonged engagement."
Vespera and Seraphine hit the joints with coordinated cold and light, creating the micro-fractures the others needed. Rhea and Lisa forced it to commit weight forward. Mia layered a short-duration barrier over Caroline as she darted in to drive a reinforced strike into an exposed underjoint. Trevor stepped into the opening, drove his blade through the fractured plating, and severed the primary essence core.
The construct collapsed in a heap of inert black ice.
They were already moving before the shards stopped sliding.
[Survival Timer: 00:56:02]
The hall exited into another descending corridor, narrower than the last. The cold intensified again. Essence drain climbed. Body temperatures across the unit continued their slow downward creep despite every thermal regulation rune running at full capacity. Reserves sat in the low-to-mid 50 percent range. Still viable. Still dangerous if the pressure increased further.
The network remained locked. Every presence sharp. No panic. No fractures.
A sudden structural collapse ahead forced them into a dead-end side chamber. The walls sealed with a grinding roar of shifting ice. Residual cold predators—eight of them, fast and coordinated—dropped from the ceiling and walls simultaneously.
The fight was ugly and close.
Rhea took a glancing blow across the shoulder that failed to penetrate but still cost essence. Lisa's counter-cut dropped the attacker before it could follow up. Vespera and Seraphine worked under continuous pressure, their aspects pushed closer to the edge of sustainable output. Mia's barriers flickered three times in rapid succession. Caroline and Elena fought back-to-back for several seconds when the formation was momentarily compressed. Trevor killed the two largest himself and forced the remaining predators into the others' kill zones.
When the last one stopped moving, Elena's medical pulse moved through the network.
Rhea's shoulder was bruised but functional. Essence loss across the unit was higher than preferred. No one was down.
The sealed walls began to shift again, reopening the path forward.
[Survival Timer: 00:58:47]
Trevor checked the private overlay.
Projected survival probability still held at maximum under current parameters, but the margin had narrowed further. The Ice Forge was no longer testing coordination. It was testing endurance.
They moved back into the corridor and continued descending.
One minute and thirteen seconds remained until the sixty-minute threshold.
The dungeon still had time to kill them.
They still had time to refuse.
**Chapter 43: Final Minutes**
The corridor narrowed further. Black ice pressed in from both sides. The fog had become a continuous, essence-draining wall. Visibility inside the bubble maintained by Vespera and Seraphine shrank to barely two meters. The cold was no longer merely environmental—it was active, deliberate, trying to stop hearts and freeze essence cores solid.
[Survival Timer: 00:59:12]
Trevor kept them moving at the exact pace the network calculated as optimal. Too fast and the unstable floor would punish them. Too slow and the cold would win. Rhea and Lisa tested every step. Elena tracked structural integrity and residual body heat in real time. Mia held the last of her barrier reserves. Caroline watched every angle. Vespera and Seraphine cycled their aspects at the absolute edge of sustainable output.
A final wave of predators hit without warning—larger frost stalkers, six of them, heavily plated, coordinated, and coming from front and rear simultaneously.
The fight was the hardest yet.
Rhea and Lisa met the frontal pair under continuous pressure. One stalker got past Lisa's guard far enough to rake claws across her side; the armor held, but the impact still drove the breath from her lungs. Vespera flash-froze the rear pair long enough for Seraphine to punch light lances through their cores. Mia's last full barrier took a direct hit that would have isolated Elena. Caroline's strikes were precise and desperate. Trevor killed the two alphas himself with clean, economy-of-motion thrusts and forced the remaining predators into the others' blades.
When the last one dropped, Elena's medical pulse moved through the network.
Lisa's side was bruised and essence-stressed but functional. No penetration. No one was down. Reserves across the unit had dropped into the mid-40 percent range.
[Survival Timer: 00:59:48]
Twelve seconds.
The corridor opened into a final wide chamber of black ice under a ceiling of hanging spears. Ancient runes glowed faintly in the walls. Something shifted in the far dark—large, slow, and heavy with residual power—but it did not fully emerge.
Trevor's command was absolute.
"Hold formation. Do not engage. Timer only."
They stopped in the center of the chamber, tight circle, weapons ready, network locked. The cold pressed harder. The fog thickened. The hanging spears trembled. The large presence in the dark watched them and did not advance.
[Survival Timer: 00:59:59]
One second.
[Survival Timer: 01:00:00]
The system interface flared across every linked mind at once.
[Survival Condition Met]
[Sixty continuous minutes achieved]

[Extraction in 10 seconds]
White light began to gather around them.
The large presence in the dark shifted once more, then went still. The Ice Forge had tested them and, for this group, failed to kill.
Trevor checked the network one final time.
Every presence remained. Mia. Lisa. Vespera. Seraphine. Caroline. Elena. Rhea. All accounted for. All standing. All still bound to him and to each other at absolute saturation.
The white light claimed them.
They had survived.
