Chapter 184: surviving the ice forge

Trevor kept the pace deliberate. Too fast and the unstable floor would punish them. Too slow and the cold would settle into bone and core. The network handled the constant micro-adjustments without verbal noise—Rhea and Lisa testing every step, Elena tracking structural integrity and body temperature, Mia holding barriers in reserve, Caroline watching for ambush angles, Vespera and Seraphine trading cold and light in a continuous low-output rhythm.

The next wave came from the walls themselves.

Living ice peeled away in long, bladed sheets that tried to shear the formation apart. Rhea's blade met the first sheet and shattered it. Lisa's follow-up cut the second before it could close. Vespera flash-froze a third long enough for Seraphine to punch a light lance through its core. Trevor took the two that came from above, clean thrusts that dropped them in pieces. Elena flagged a near-miss on Caroline's flank; Mia's barrier flickered into existence for less than a second and was already gone.

Engagement time: eight seconds.

They moved on.

A long ice bridge appeared ahead, spanning a black chasm that seemed to have no bottom. The bridge was narrow, cracked, and visibly stressed. Trevor felt the weakness through the ambient essence four full seconds before the first visible fracture spread.

"Single file. Fast. No stops."

They crossed in tight order. Rhea first, then Lisa, Vespera, Seraphine, Mia, Trevor, Caroline, Elena last. The bridge began to fail under Elena's weight. She cleared the far edge with half a second to spare. The span collapsed behind them in a roar of shattering ice that echoed down the chasm for a long time.

[Survival Timer: 00:27:51]

Frost storms returned—stronger, longer, layered with essence-draining fog that tried to strip heat and power directly from the body. Vespera and Seraphine pushed their aspects harder, carving temporary corridors. The rest of the unit stayed inside the bubble, moving as one. No one broke formation. No one burned extra essence on panic.

A pack of larger frost stalkers—eight this time, heavier plating, coordinated—erupted from a side fissure while the storm still howled. The fight was longer and uglier. Rhea and Lisa held the front under continuous pressure. Vespera and Seraphine shattered joints and cores as openings appeared. Mia's barriers took three solid hits that would have isolated someone. Caroline's strikes were precise and economical. Trevor killed the two alphas himself. Elena confirmed no penetrating injuries and only moderate essence loss across the board.

They did not stop to recover.

The dungeon wanted them to stop. Stopping meant death.

[Survival Timer: 00:34:06]

A new chamber opened—a wide, circular space under a ceiling of hanging ice spears that trembled with every heavy step. Ancient constructs stirred in the walls again, larger than the previous ones, runes glowing with residual cold power. Three of them stepped fully into the open, bipedal, heavily armored, each carrying a blade of black ice.

Trevor's command moved through the network.

"Full pattern. Keep the timer running. No glory kills."

Rhea and Lisa engaged the first construct, forcing it to commit. Vespera and Seraphine worked the flanks in alternating pulses, creating the micro-fractures the others needed. Mia layered barriers only where the residual frost pulses threatened to break formation. Caroline and Elena struck every opening the moment it appeared. Trevor drove the finishing cuts through each core in turn.

The three constructs collapsed into inert shards within four minutes.

A fourth began to rise from the far wall.

They were already moving past it, leaving the incomplete construct behind. Clearing was not the objective. Survival was.

[Survival Timer: 00:39:18]

The cold deepened further. Essence reserves across the unit had dropped to the mid-60 percent range. Still acceptable. Still sustainable. The network remained locked at 100 percent. Every presence was sharp. No one was injured. No one had broken formation.

Trevor checked the private system overlay.

Projected survival probability remained at maximum under current parameters.

They had twenty-one minutes left.

The Ice Forge pressed harder.

After the circular chamber the path narrowed into a long, descending corridor of black ice that seemed to drink light. The fog grew so thick that even Vespera and Seraphine's continuous cycling could only maintain a three-meter bubble. The essence drain climbed again. Body temperatures across the unit began to edge downward despite thermal regulation runes.

[Survival Timer: 00:41:07]

Trevor kept them moving. The network handled the constant corrections—Rhea and Lisa testing every unstable patch of floor, Elena tracking micro-fractures in the ice and residual heat loss, Mia holding barriers in absolute reserve, Caroline watching the walls and ceiling for the next ambush, Vespera and Seraphine trading cold and light in a relentless low-output rhythm that never paused.

The corridor opened without warning into a vast vertical shaft. Ice bridges crossed it at irregular intervals, some already cracked, some missing entirely. The bottom was lost in darkness. Wind howled upward, carrying sheets of razor frost.

Trevor's command was calm.

"One bridge at a time. Tight file. No gaps."

They crossed the first span without incident. The second began to fail under Seraphine's weight. Vespera's cold pulse locked the cracking ice long enough for the rest of the unit to clear. The span collapsed the moment Elena stepped off. Shards fell into the dark for a long time.

[Survival Timer: 00:44:33]

A new predator type appeared—larger, quadrupedal shapes of living ice and residual runes that moved along the walls and ceiling with disturbing speed. Six of them struck at once from three different angles. The fight was the longest yet.

Rhea and Lisa met the frontal pair under heavy pressure. Vespera and Seraphine shattered the flanking two with coordinated pulses. Mia's barriers took two solid impacts that would have isolated Caroline. Trevor killed the ceiling pair himself with precise, economy-of-motion thrusts. Elena confirmed no penetrating wounds, but essence reserves had dropped into the high 50 percent range across the unit.

They did not stop.

The dungeon rewarded stopping with death.

[Survival Timer: 00:48:19]

Frost storms returned in layered waves, each one stronger than the last. Visibility collapsed to almost nothing. The essence-draining fog tried to strip heat and power directly from bone. Vespera and Seraphine pushed their aspects to the edge of sustainable output, carving narrow corridors through the white. The rest of the unit stayed inside the bubble, moving as one organism. No one broke formation. No one burned panic essence.
