Chapter 183: dawn brings the final assignment

Standard formation holds. Rhea and Lisa take point but stay within two meters of the flanks. Vespera and Seraphine cycle cold and light to counter the fog and frost. Mia barriers only on confirmed threats. Caroline and Elena watch for structural collapse and medical spikes. I take center and any high-threat construct. No one breaks formation for a kill. Sixty minutes. Nothing else."

Seven clean acknowledgments returned.

Lira's voice cut across the hall.

"Group 047. Fifteen minutes start now. Plan or don't. I don't care. Platform opens when the timer hits zero."

Trevor turned to the seven women.

"We already know the only plan that works. Move as one. Kill what must be killed. Keep the timer running. If the network drops for any reason, fall back to the verbal protocols we tested in Blackroot Hollow. No one dies for a glory kill. Questions?"

There were none.

The fifteen minutes passed in silence. Other groups around them argued, shouted, or stared at the projection in rising panic. Trevor's unit simply stood together, network locked, breathing even.

When the timer hit zero Lira flicked her wrist.

"Group 047. Platform."

They stepped onto the glowing runes as a single unit.

White light swallowed them.

The Ice Forge waited.

White light faded.

Cold hit them like a physical blow.

The Ice Forge opened into a vast, vaulted chamber of black ice and ancient stone. The ceiling disappeared into swirling frost. Jagged pillars rose from a floor of cracked, translucent ice that groaned under their weight. The air burned the lungs. Essence-draining fog drifted in slow, heavy sheets. Visibility dropped to less than fifteen meters in every direction.

The system timer appeared in Trevor's vision and in every linked mind.

[Environment: Extreme cold – continuous essence drain active]

[Hazard density: High]

Trevor's voice moved through the network without sound.

"Formation. Move."

Rhea and Lisa took point two meters ahead. Vespera and Seraphine slid to the flanks, cold and light already cycling in low, controlled pulses to push back the fog. Mia and Caroline held center with Trevor. Elena covered the rear, medical suite open and tracking residual body temperature across the entire unit.

They advanced.

The first predators came from above—long, serpentine shapes of living ice that dropped from the unseen ceiling without warning. Rhea's blade met the lead one mid-fall, shearing through its core. Lisa's follow-up cut dropped the second. Vespera's cold pulse flash-froze the third long enough for Seraphine's light lance to punch through it. Trevor himself took the fourth with a single precise thrust. Elena flagged a temperature drop on Caroline's left side; Mia's barrier flickered into place before the residual frost could bite.

Total engagement time: six seconds.

No one spoke. The network had already shared threat vectors, kill confirmations, and essence expenditure.

They pushed deeper.

The chamber narrowed into a series of ice bridges spanning black, bottomless cracks. The bridges were unstable. Trevor felt the structural weakness through the dungeon's ambient essence three full seconds before the first span began to crack. The network pulsed. Formation tightened. They crossed in a single tight file, Rhea and Lisa testing each step, Elena monitoring the ice integrity in real time. The bridge collapsed behind them with a sound like breaking glass, sending shards into the dark below.

Frost storms began without warning—sudden, howling walls of wind and ice crystals that reduced visibility to zero and tried to tear essence directly from the body. Vespera and Seraphine cycled their aspects harder, carving temporary safe corridors through the storm. Mia layered short-duration barriers only where the wind threatened to isolate someone. Trevor kept the unit moving at a controlled pace, never stopping, never allowing the cold to settle into their cores.

A pack of frost stalkers—low, six-legged, plated in ice—erupted from a side fissure. The fight lasted nine seconds. Rhea and Lisa pinned the front. Vespera and Seraphine shattered the flanks. Caroline's precise strikes exploited every opening. Trevor killed the largest two. Elena confirmed no injuries and only minor essence loss across the board.

They did not slow.

The Ice Forge was designed to punish hesitation and poor coordination. Most groups would already be shouting positions, burning essence on panic barriers, or losing members to the first storm. Trevor's unit moved like a single organism. The network made every decision shared and instantaneous.

[Survival Timer: 00:11:42]

A larger chamber opened ahead—an open ice arena under a ceiling of hanging spears. Ancient constructs stirred in the walls: bipedal shapes of black ice and residual runes, slow but heavily armored, designed to exhaust teams that had already spent too much on the approach.

Trevor's group had not.

He gave one command through the link.

"Standard kill pattern. No solo plays. Keep moving after."

Rhea and Lisa engaged the first construct frontally, forcing it to commit weight. Vespera and Seraphine worked the joints with alternating cold and light, creating micro-fractures. Mia's barriers absorbed the residual frost pulses. Caroline and Elena struck the exposed gaps the moment they appeared. Trevor drove the final cut through the primary core.

The construct collapsed into inert shards.

Three more rose.

They killed them the same way—efficient, coordinated, no wasted motion—and kept advancing before the chamber could spawn the next wave.

[Survival Timer: 00:18:09]

The cold deepened. Essence drain intensified. The fog grew thicker. Somewhere ahead the true heart of the Ice Forge waited, but clearing it was not the goal. Survival was.

Trevor checked the network.

Every presence remained sharp. Essence reserves across the unit still sat above 70 percent. No injuries. No fractures in formation. The marks burned steady and strong.

They had forty-two minutes left.

The Ice Forge had only begun to test them.

They would not break.

The Ice Forge did not ease.

After the first open arena the dungeon funneled them into a descending spiral of narrower halls. Black ice walls pressed close. The fog thickened until even Vespera and Seraphine's cycling aspects could only carve a five-meter bubble of usable visibility. The temperature dropped another measurable degree every few minutes. Essence drain climbed from steady to aggressive.
