Chapter 182 - 18 hours remained: final preparations

  • Next Chapter

Eighteen hours remained.

He would use every one of them.

The real trial was no longer theoretical.

It was coming.

The day passed in measured silence.

Trevor kept the team inside the residence until dusk. No unnecessary movement. No external contact. The network remained open at full saturation, every presence sharp and immediate. Light recovery only—food, hydration, short rest cycles, gear refinement. No sparring. No essence expenditure beyond baseline maintenance.

By late afternoon the final equipment layout was complete. Each member's armor had been adjusted for the expected cold of the Ice Forge. Thermal regulation runes were layered and tested. Toxin and frost filters were double-checked. Emergency beacons were calibrated to the Silver Guild's provisional frequency. Primary and secondary weapons were cleaned, edged, and sealed.

Trevor walked the line once more.

Mia's support barriers were stable. Lisa and Rhea's point blades carried fresh reinforcement. Vespera's cold aspect and Seraphine's light aspect were both tuned for sustained low-output use rather than burst. Caroline's precision strikes were logged against expected frost-armored targets. Elena's medical and tracking suite was fully charged. His own combat overlay sat quiet and ready.

He gathered them in the main living area as the sun dropped behind the city walls.

"We leave two hours before dawn. Formation on arrival is the same one we used in Blackroot Hollow. Rhea and Lisa on point. Vespera and Seraphine on flanks. Mia and Caroline center with me. Elena rear and medical. Link primary. Verbal only if the network is disrupted. Once the group assignment is confirmed we will receive the Ice Forge parameters. We sit, we plan, we execute. Sixty minutes. Nothing else matters until the timer clears."

Rhea nodded once. "If one of us drops?"

"The rest keep moving. Grief after survival. Not during."

Lisa's jaw tightened, but she accepted it. The others did the same. They had already heard the rule. Repeating it only locked it deeper.

Trevor continued. "After we walk out—if we walk out—we become a provisional Silver Guild unit. Locked structure. I will formalize the exclusivity oath the moment the paperwork is complete. No additional men. The bond stays closed. Any internal conflict goes through official arbitration only. We settle our own problems first."

Vespera's lips curved slightly. "Practical."

"Necessary," Trevor corrected.

He looked at each of them in turn. Mia's calm resolve. Lisa's sharp readiness. Vespera's cool hunger. Seraphine's luminous stillness. Caroline's quiet determination. Elena's careful focus. Rhea's battle edge.

Seven women. One network. One remaining night.

"Sleep in shifts. Two on watch at all times. Network stays open. If anything external approaches the residence wards, I want to know before it reaches the door. We move at the scheduled hour. No delays."

They dispersed without further discussion. Mia and Elena took the first watch. The others retreated to rest. Trevor remained in the main room, reviewing the private system logs one final time.

[Network Synchronization: 100%]

[Mark Depth: Maximum]

[Projected Ice Forge survival probability: maximum under current parameters]

[Time to insertion: 11 hours 47 minutes]

The numbers were as good as they would ever be.

Outside, the city settled into night. Somewhere in the Silver Guild's examination complex, Lira Voss was already preparing the final group lists and the insertion platforms. Somewhere far colder, the Ice Forge waited—ancient stone, killing frost, and whatever residual things the guild considered suitable for deciding who deserved to live past sixty minutes.

Trevor closed the interface and settled into a light combat rest, the network still humming at the edge of his awareness.

Eleven hours.

He would use every one of them.

Dawn would bring the trial.

They would be ready.

Two hours before dawn the residence was already sealed and quiet. Trevor stood at the front door in full gear. The seven women assembled behind him without needing a verbal call. The network carried the readiness pulse cleanly—every presence sharp, every essence reserve stable, every mark still saturated from the long night of claim.

They left under cover of the city's pre-dawn wards. No conversation. Standard formation even on the open street: Rhea and Lisa ahead, Vespera and Seraphine on the flanks, Mia and Caroline close to Trevor, Elena at the rear. The walk to the examination hall took twenty-three minutes. The streets were nearly empty. Only a few other candidate groups moved in the same direction, most of them looking tired, nervous, or both.

The Silver Guild examination hall was already lit. Tiered seating, central platform, and the same layered runes from Phase One. Candidates packed the floor in loose clusters. Lira Voss stood on the raised dais again, silver hair tied back, examiner's coat open, data slate in one hand and a fresh steaming cup in the other. She looked as bored as she had on the first day.

Trevor's group took a position near the lower seating and waited.

Lira raised her voice through the amplification runes.

"Phase Two insertion begins in forty minutes. Groups of eight. You will be called by number. Once your group is confirmed you will receive the dungeon parameters for the Ice Forge. You will have fifteen minutes to review and plan. After that you step onto the platform and you are gone. Survive sixty continuous minutes. Do not clear it. Historically fewer than one hundred total survivors across every group. Those who walk out become provisional Silver Guild units, locked structure. Arbitration only through official channels. Questions will not be answered. Begin."

Holographic numbers appeared above every candidate's head. Trevor's read 047 again. Within seconds matching numbers flared above the seven women standing with him. The system had registered the network. Lira's process had done exactly what he expected.

A clerk called their unit first.

"Group 047. Step forward."

They moved as one. Lira glanced at her slate, then at the seven women and Trevor, expression unchanged.

"Existing multi-mark network detected. Group locked as assigned. No adjustments. Ice Forge parameters loading now."

A projection unfolded in the air above the platform.

[Active S-Rank Dungeon: Ice Forge]

[Environment: Extreme cold, unstable ice structures, residual ancient constructs]

[Primary hazards: Frost storms, collapsing ice bridges, cold-aspected predators, essence-draining fog]

[Objective: Survive sixty continuous minutes from insertion]

[Clearing the core is not required and is not recommended]

[Timer begins the moment all eight feet cross the threshold]

Trevor studied the layout for twelve seconds. The others did the same through the shared link. The dungeon was a descending series of frozen halls and open ice chambers connected by narrow bridges. Visibility would be poor. Temperature would drop hard and fast. Predators favored ambush from above and below.

He spoke quietly through the network.
