Vampire Progenitor System
Chapter 376: Threshold Edge
The retreat from the center of the enclave was not as easy as the entry had been.
The instant Damaris and Lilith were freed, the remaining streams into the orb grew thick. The black-and-gold core spun faster, pulling harder on every chained figure still bound around it. The chamber answered immediately. Barriers of white law folded in from the curved walls. Thin blades of gold script cut across the path back toward the broken outer wall. The exit lane that Aeloria and Nyx had been maintaining was beginning to shrink under the pressure.
"Move!"
Lucifer kept Damaris braced against his side as he pushed a raw True Divine mass through the first wave of folding law. Nyx bore most of Lilith’s weight in a veil of living darkness, cutting anything that came too close. Behind them the rest of the team fought to keep the corridor from collapsing completely. Heron’s spear flashed in short adaptive arcs. Rhazor’s fire melted whole sections of the closing barriers into molten gaps. Zane and Anita held the left flank together even with Anita still bleeding from the earlier wound. Remu, Francisca, and Dera locked the rear as best they could while Aeloria poured restricted starfire into the shrinking wound in the outer wall.
The orb’s pressure increased with every step they made away from it.
Damaris’s voice was thin but clear against Lucifer’s shoulder. "It is compensating. When you removed our feed, the threshold process did not slow. It shifted load onto the ones still chained. If the orb reaches critical density before you leave this chamber, the release will not be contained within the enclave."
Lilith’s darker eyes were fixed on the turning core even as Nyx dragged her through another collapsing lane of law. "He is right. That thing is close. Closer than the being wanted you to see on the first window. Partial rescue bought two lives. It did not buy time."
Aeloria’s warning cut across the chaos from the exit. "The wall is closing faster. If we do not clear the lane in the next stretch, we will be sealed inside with the orb when it peaks."
Nyx’s darkness flared as a gold blade nearly took Lilith through the back. "Then stop talking and clear it. I can hold her. I cannot hold the whole chamber."
Lucifer glanced once over his shoulder at the orb.
The black-and-gold surface was no longer smooth. Light flickered rapidly underneath it in violent patterns. The remaining streams from the chained progenitors glowed brighter as the siphon demanded more from them. The threshold was no longer a distant line on a schedule. It was rising up in front of them in actual time.
For a single dangerous breath, the decision from the earlier plan returned with sharp edges. He could turn back, throw everything into a full break attempt, and try to free the rest before the orb finished. Or he could maintain the partial rescue and force the team out before the lane existed anymore.
Damaris’s hand tightened weakly on his arm. "Do not. You already made the only choice that leaves a next move. If you die here for a complete cut you cannot finish, the garden loses the only piece the being still watches with actual interest. Get us out. Come back with more."
Lucifer turned away from the orb and drove the team the last stretch of distance toward the broken wall.
The final distance cost them.
A collapsing plate of law took Rhazor full in the side and sent him hard into the curved barrier before Francisca and Dera hauled him back into motion. Anita fell to one knee when the wound in her side tore wider, and Zane had to carry most of her weight through the last gap. Heron’s spear arm was burned to the bone in places from repeated adaptive clashes. Remu’s script flickered in unstable bursts as residual drag from the orb pulled at her seat even through the chaos. Aeloria’s restricted starfire began to stutter as the exit wound tried to seal over them.
Lucifer hit the shrinking lane with everything he had left that was still controlled. True Divine pressure pushed the gold edges back far enough to allow Nyx to toss Lilith through. He followed with Damaris a heartbeat later. The rest of the team poured after him in a broken but fighting line as the outer wall of law slammed shut behind the last of them with a sound like a world sealing its mouth.
They fell back into the hidden sector’s broken approach path in a ragged group, bloodied and burning, two freed progenitors held between them.
For a moment no one spoke. The sealed wall of the enclave stood whole again behind them. Through it, even at a distance, the orb’s rising density could still be felt as a storm pressing against glass.
Zane set Anita down against a drifting plate of wreckage and looked back at the sealed barrier. "We got two. We lost the chamber. And that core is still climbing."
Aeloria braced both hands on her knees, silver light around her wrists dim and strained. "The starfire seals held. Barely. If I had spent more inside that chamber, we would be dealing with a second collapse on the way home."
Nyx held Lilith upright in a coil of darkness, black eyes fixed on the sealed wall. "Partial success. Partial failure. The being will not treat this as a defeat. He will treat it as proof that the threshold is still under his control."
Lucifer remained standing with Damaris’s weight against him, crimson eyes locked on the enclave. The faces of the ones still chained inside remained clear in his mind. The orb’s rising pressure was also clear.
"We got them out," he said. His voice was rough, but the decision underneath it was resolute. "We confirmed the threshold is close. We confirmed a full break is still possible if we return stronger and faster. This is not the end of the harvest. It is the first real cut into it."
Damaris managed a thin breath that was almost a laugh. "You always did refuse the clean version of a loss."
Lilith’s gaze moved from the sealed wall to Lucifer, dark and tired and unbroken. "Then start preparing the next cut before that orb finishes what we just interrupted. We are free. The others are not. And the being will not wait for you to feel ready."
Behind the wall of law, the harvest continued.
In the broken sector outside it, the breach team held two rescued lives, a long list of wounds, and the knowledge that the threshold was closer than any of them wanted.
The race was no longer only a plan.
It was already underway.
