Vampire Progenitor System

Chapter 375: Inside the Enclave

The broken lane through the wall of law would not remain open forever.

Lucifer could see the edges trying to pull closed, golden light creeping back over the center of the wound they had forced into the barrier. Nyx braced the sides back with living darkness. Aeloria locked what little starfire she could still safely spend into the unstable frame. The rest of the team held the corridor with blood, fire, script, and will.

"Through," Lucifer said. "Now."

They pushed into the enclave.

The moment they crossed the threshold, the air changed. The cold pressure of the outer sector fell away and was replaced with something heavier and more focused. The chamber beyond the wall was vast and circular, with no true floor or ceiling, only layered barriers of compressed law that curved inward toward the center. At that center floated the orb.

Up close it was worse than the earlier glimpse had shown.

The black-and-gold core turned in a slow, dense motion, fed by dozens of thin streams of stolen authority. Each ran from a chained figure hanging in forced stillness around the orb. The old progenitors were there in full- Damaris, Lilith, Elara, Kaelthos, and the rest- bound by conceptual metal that sank into their bodies and kept them from moving, speaking, or fighting back. Their authority was being pulled from them, in a steady, continuous drain, leaving their forms dimmer than they should have been, but not empty. Not yet.

Lucifer’s eyes found Damaris and Lilith at once.

Damaris hung to the left of the orb, residual gold light still fighting the siphon in stubborn pulses. His eyes were open. When they locked on Lucifer, recognition and warning moved through them in the same breath. Lilith hung closer to the right, darker essence more deeply drawn into the harvest than most of the others, but still aware. Her gaze found him and held with the same fierce focus she had always carried, even through the chains.

Zane’s voice was rough from the fight outside. "It is worse than the window showed. The streams are thicker. The orb denser."

Anita pressed a hand against the wound in her side and stared at the circling figures. "If we cut the wrong stream first, the whole system may snap back on the vessels still feeding it. We need a clean break, not a panicked one."

Aeloria’s face was pale under the strain of holding her limit while still supporting the broken wall behind them. "The siphon is past the midpoint. If we only free one or two and retreat, the orb may still reach threshold on what remains. If we try to free all of them at once with this team, the chamber will kill us before the chains fall."

Nyx’s black eyes remained on the orb. "Then we start with the ones that matter most to the line we can actually hold. Cut their streams. Break their chains. Pull them out of the feed. Everything else comes after."

Lucifer was already moving toward Damaris and Lilith.

The chamber did not permit him to walk freely. Residual defenses rose from the curved barriers as he advanced- thin blades of white law and gold script to drive him back toward the broken wall. Heron met the first wave with his spear. Rhazor’s fire turned the second aside. Remu and Francisca locked containment about the flanks so the team would not be split. Dera held the rear near Aeloria, keeping the exit lane from collapsing completely.

Lucifer reached the first ring of chains under pressure.

Up close, the conceptual metal sank deeper into Damaris’s body than it had looked from outside. The stream of gold authority running from him into the orb was steady and strong, in spite of the resistance still left in him. Lilith’s stream was darker and thicker, already more fully claimed by the harvest.

"Hold them off," Lucifer said without looking back. "I am cutting these two free."

Nyx moved up on his right, darkness already forming into cutting threads. "The chains are bound into the siphon. If you only break the metal, the stream may still hold. Cut the feed first, then the binding."

Lucifer placed one hand near the stream running from Damaris and drove True Divine authority into it like a blade. The feed resisted. For a moment the orb pulled harder, as if sensing the threat to its supply. Damaris’s body jerked in the chains, residual gold flaring in pain and recognition. Lucifer did not ease off. He layered blood and shadow into the cut and forced the stream to thin.

Nyx’s darkness wrapped the matching stream from Lilith and began sawing through it with short, vicious precision. The dark feed fought her, but the living black refused to release it.

About them the chamber grew more violent. Secondary barriers folded inward. Zane and Anita were driven back several steps before Rhazor and Heron braced the line again. Aeloria’s restricted starfire flickered hard as she reinforced the exit wound in the outer wall. Remu’s voice cut through the noise, tight with strain.

"The orb is reacting. Whatever you are doing, finish it before this whole chamber turns into a killing field."

Lucifer forced the last of his weight into Damaris’s stream. The gold feed snapped.

The chain around Damaris cracked in the same instant, conceptual metal splitting under the sudden loss of the siphon’s hold. Damaris fell forward out of the binding, barely caught by Lucifer’s outstretched arm. His body was lighter than it should have been, drained and shaking, but his eyes were still open and locked on his son.

"You should not have come this far," Damaris got out, voice rough and thin. "The threshold is too close."

"I came anyway," Lucifer said.

On the other side, Nyx finished the cut through Lilith’s stream. The dark feed broke with sound of tearing cloth. The chains around Lilith shattered a heartbeat later, and she dropped hard into Nyx’s waiting darkness. For a moment she could not stand. Then her hand closed in Nyx’s veil with enough force to prove the will under the drain was still intact.

"The orb," Lilith said, voice low and raw. "Do not stare at us. Look at the orb."

Lucifer did.

The black-and-gold core had not slowed. If anything, the loss of two major feeds had made the remaining streams pull harder. The orb’s surface rippled with rising density, and the cold pressure in the chamber climbed with it. The harvest was not collapsing. It was compensating.

Aeloria’s warning came sharp from the rear. "We cannot free all of them on this entry. The wall behind us is starting to close. If we stay for the full set, we lose the exit and the two we already cut free."

Nyx hauled Lilith into a more stable hold and looked at Lucifer. "Partial rescue or total loss. Those are the choices the chamber is giving us."

Lucifer looked once more at the remaining chained figures, at the orb still feeding on them, and at Damaris and Lilith now free of the metal but far from safe. The being’s earlier certainty pressed against the moment like a second wall.

"We take what we have cut free and we hold the lane out," he said. The words cost him. "We come back for the rest before the threshold finishes. If we die here on the first full entry, no one comes back at all."

Damaris’s hand tightened weakly on Lucifer’s arm. Lilith’s dark eyes remained hard even through the exhaustion. Neither of them argued. The chamber itself was already trying to close the argument for them.

The team began the fighting retreat toward the broken wall, two freed progenitors in tow, the orb still turning behind them, and the harvest far from finished.
