Chapter 173: Talking to stuck-ups is really difficult, isn’t it?
Lucian walked beside Vivienne with his hands in his pockets.
"You think Evelyn will be okay?"
Lucian asked curiously.
"If you ask this question again, I will send you back."
Vivienne’s mouth twitched.
This was the third time Lucian had asked this question and this was when he already knew Enclave’s personnel were taking her to a guest room, where she could eat, rest, or do whatever she pleased.
"But you said you were taking me for a lecture."
"Yes, and sending you away would be a lecture on why you should shut your mouth when asked."
Lucian turned silent at those words.
’How cold-hearted. Who talks to his lovely student like that? Especially when the said student just recovered from a life-threatening injury.’
He pouted.
Of course, he didn’t utter those words out loud.
He had no death wish.
He, however, did have another question.
"Where are we going anyways?"
"Follow quietly."
Vivienne ordered. Lucian rolled his eyes and then followed her with a finger on his lips. Vivienne ignored his antics and walked.
After about fifteen minutes’ walk from Vivienne’s Training Hall, the two stopped in front of a pair of black doors.
Vivienne walked in, Lucian following with the same casual smile on his face.
He wanted to greet everyone inside with a big ’Howdy People~’ but seeing as how Vivienne was looking at him as if she knew what he was thinking—
Lucian very smartly decided against that.
His violet eyes, however, moved around the room. There were several people working inside, there was a large black mirror placed at the far end of the room. It was framed with dark metal and covered with thin silver lines that made Lucian narrow his eyes.
He could sense it.
"That isn’t an ordinary mirror..."
He narrowed his eyes and spoke with a solemn look on his face.
"Oh? Did the fact that its surface is black instead of reflective tell you that?"
Vivienne answered sarcastically as she walked forward.
"Oh? Sarcasm~ See, teacher? You are opening up to me. It is only a matter of time before you fall in love with me."
Lucian smiled as he followed her. Soon, however, his eyes fell on two particular people and he froze.
He recognised them immediately.
Marcelline Voss.
Severin Hale.
Two of the Ten Directorates.
What were they doing here...?
He couldn’t help but wonder in his head. He was not expecting to meet the top brass of the organisation today.
He looked at his teacher, expecting her to be a little nervous as well, but Vivienne walked forward without any change in her expression and that only made him even more nervous.
Lucian looked at Marcelline Voss. She was standing near the centre table, reading a report while two aides stood beside her with sealed folders. She was exactly how he imagined she would be.
The one who surprised him more was Severin Hale. The Concord Seat, the one responsible for diplomatically dealing with supernatural beings. Lucian expected him to be a calm, rational, cold man with a perfect poker face, making it impossible for anyone to know what he was thinking.
What he saw, however, was...
Something different.
Severin Hale was sitting in front of a table and on his table were... plates filled with sandwiches.
There were a total of sixteen sandwiches there.
The Concord Seat of the Enclave, one of the highest-ranking people in the entire organization, was stuffing his mouth with sandwiches while giving orders.
"No, the inner ring remains unlit until the other side accepts contact, and make sure you don’t activate it before I tell you to. Don’t blame me if the mirror interprets the channel as an invitation instead of communication.
If an Archdemon comes out of it, I will use you all as bait before I run."
The aide near the mirror went pale.
He looked at the mirror for a moment and he couldn’t move.
A demon can... come out of this...?
That too, an Archdemon...?
Just that thought alone made his body tremble.
As for Severin—
"And eat something after this."
He spoke casually.
"Your hands are shaking, nerves become worse when the body has no fuel."
"...yes, Director."
The aide couldn’t say anything else.
Lucian stared at the man and while he observed him, Marcelline noticed him.
"Why’s he here?"
She narrowed her eyes, looking at Vivienne.
Lucian stared at Vivienne, he honestly wanted to see how she would react. Lucian had seen how people reacted to Vivienne, he had seen her boss everyone inside a room around without a care in the world and he...
He wanted to see how a woman, who was used to bossing everyone around, acted when she met a Directorate.
But then—
"Do you see me questioning why you have your team of monkeys with you?"
Vivienne looked back at Marcelline and Lucian, he froze.
You can talk to a Directorate like that...?
It was allowed...?
He turned to Marcelline, curious to see how she would react.
"My team is not directly involved in the incident."
And unlike how Lucian expected her to be offended or at least look frustrated, Marcelline looked... used to it.
That made Lucian stare back at his teacher...
Honestly, he still had no idea who she was.
He had read Enclave’s file, he had learned about its basic structure, the higher-ups, the ones who held the power, and the ones who did the field work, and he never once found her name anywhere.
It was as if she wasn’t even a part of Enclave.
’Wait, is she a ghost only I can see?
Or maybe a hidden ancestor who has fallen in love with me?’
"This is exactly why I brought him, we need someone who was directly involved with the incident."
Vivienne, completely oblivious to whatever bullshit Lucian was thinking, answered Marcelline.
"His existence might get a reaction out of demons. I would like to avoid that."
The Cleaner Seat spoke carefully.
"Stop being a pussy."
Vivienne snorted and Marcelline...
She had no idea how to deal with such crass wording.
"Just let him be."
That’s when Severin, the actual leader of this meeting, spoke up.
"The demons will bring him up anyways. Him being present or absent here won’t change that."
Marcelline only looked at him and—
"Don’t talk to me with your mouth full."
She looked disgusted.
And Severin just shrugged as he ignored her and glanced at Lucian—
"Talking to stuck-ups is really difficult, isn’t it?"
He spoke, still with his mouth full.
