Chapter 174: Demons Hierarchy.
Chapter 174: Demons Hierarchy.
"Don’t talk to me with your mouth full."
Severin just shrugged as he ignored her and glanced at Lucian—
"Talking to stuck-ups really is difficult, isn’t it?"
He spoke, still with his mouth full.
Lucian watched him for a moment. He had no idea whether he should agree or disagree with him. Severin saw his confusion and saw this moment as a teaching opportunity.
"You see, meetings with demons can last hours. If you get hungry during the meeting, that can create irritation. Irritation can create poor wording. Poor wording can create bloodshed.
Therefore, snacks are part of diplomacy."
He explained as he gobbled down the sandwich in his mouth before eating another one.
Lucian’s face, however, was no longer as casual as it was before.
"Meetings with demons?"
He narrowed his eyes at those words.
Severin frowned at those words.
"You didn’t know?"
Lucian glanced at Vivienne, Vivienne stared back at him and nodded.
"Yes, we are here to meet one of the demon representatives."
"You want me to talk to demons...?"
Lucian’s disgust and anger couldn’t be clearer.
Though Vivienne—
"No, you won’t say a word till you are asked to. You do not have that authority yet. I only brought you here because I want you to witness it."
She answered directly, completely uncaring of Lucian’s disgust.
Lucian stared at her.
At this point, all his previous casualness disappeared completely.
He could see why Vivienne had brought him here. He knew Enclave didn’t just stand against the Supernatural World, they were a part of it. There were treaties, deals, and rules that Enclave agreed to, and even proposed a few of them.
The people of Enclave were basically co-existing with the supernatural forces, and that included demons.
Lucian knew that, he knew Enclave had diplomatic relationships with the demons, he knew the Enclave was constantly in touch with the demons, it was just that—
When Lucian imagined himself talking to a demon, being polite and seeking their cooperation on something, anything—
He felt disgusted.
He wanted to eradicate all demons, not play politics with them.
And Vivienne knew that. This was the reason she had brought him here.
To play politics with demons, to do something he did not like, because this something was a necessity.
And just as he thought—
"Remember, it wasn’t the entire Demon Race who killed your parents, it was one demon."
Vivienne spoke with a serious look on her face.
"Not like other demons are any better."
Lucian mumbled, avoiding his teacher’s eyes.
"No demon is better, Lucian."
Vivienne did not deny it but then—
"And humans aren’t the friendliest either, some of them are worse than demons."
At those words, Lucian couldn’t help but stare back at Vivienne again. He knew she wasn’t wrong. He saw Orpheus, the man had practically everything he wanted, yet he still made a deal with a demon just so he could enslave a human.
The worst part?
Lucian knew Orpheus wasn’t even the worst of humans, he knew there were worse people out there.
"No race in this world is pure and just, so what are you going to do? Not involve yourself with any race? You are nowhere near strong enough to survive in this world as a lone wolf. Someone like you would be hunted down and torn apart within a month."
Vivienne laughed.
Lucian only listened to her with a serious look on his face, burning every word into his memory, then, with a serious look on her face, Vivienne continued.
"Learn to broaden your mind, Lucian.
Do not let your hatred limit you."
Vivienne’s eyes then shimmered intensely—
"I have said this before, I’ll say it again.
Be selfish.
Do what you know will benefit you in the long run.
Do what brings you closer to what you desire.
Even if that means making a deal with a demon."
Vivienne spoke directly, without sugarcoating her words, then, she pointed at Severin. The Concord Seat was a little taken aback by that, a bit of his sandwich getting stuck in his throat. Vivienne didn’t care, she just continued—
"Observe him, see him in action, there is a lot you can learn from him."
"From him...?"
Lucian spoke, looking at the Concord Seat who was choking on his own food.
Severin’s eyes could practically see the respect Lucian had for him when he first came here disappearing.
He quickly drank water to wash it all down, then, once his throat was free, he coughed and then, he sat straight with a serious look on his face.
"You."
He called one of the aides.
"Y-Yes?"
"Do your work properly, I do not entertain mistakes."
"A-As you command, Director."
The aide had no idea what prompted that reaction, but he nodded and returned to what he was doing.
Vivienne watched what the Concord Seat was doing and for a moment, she wanted to slap him. For now, however, she held back that urge.
"Now come."
She ordered. Lucian nodded at her words and followed her. He looked around the room again, at the black mirror at the far end.
"Do you know what it is?"
Severin questioned, looking at Lucian like a mature mentor.
It was clear that he was very weak to praise, especially when the said praise came from Lady Vivienne. He wanted to prove her words right and teach Lucian what he could.
"I don’t."
Lucian shook his head and answered honestly.
"That’s an Accord Mirror.
You can think of it as a window between our world and the Demon Realm. A window through which the two sides can communicate."
Then, as his eyes remained on Lucian, as if he was waiting for a reaction, he spoke the next words.
"This is what we are going to use to talk to the Demon Representative from the Court of Desire—
Archdemon Nyssara of House Vesperis."
And the instant he said those words, Severin got the exact expression he was hoping for.
"Archdemon of... House Vesperis?"
Lucian widened his eyes.
House Vesperis was the oldest noble House of Desire Demons. They were known for possessing one of the strongest and most prestigious bloodlines in demon history.
An Archdemon from that bloodline...
Lucian could already imagine what monstrosity was awaiting him.
In the Supernatural World, like most other races, demons had a clear hierarchy.
Demon Spawn.
Demon Imp.
Lesser Demon.
Common Demon.
Greater Demon.
Noble Demon.
High Demon.
Archdemon.
Demon General.
Demon Prince.
And the Demon Sovereign.
An Archdemon was the fourth strongest rank in the demon hierarchy, a being comparable to an Alpha Werewolf even when descending through a Seventh Veil Host.
And if, by some hellish means, one managed to descend onto Earth with its real body—
It would be a nightmare.
Countries would be erased before somehow, in some way, that monster was stopped.
That was what it meant to be an Archdemon.
And today—
As Lucian stared at the Accord Mirror—
He realised that he was going to meet one of those monstrous existences.
