Chapter 488: Remnants Of Pavilion
The air beyond the iron threshold did not merely burn; it clung to the skin like hot, oily grease.
Thick, rust-colored ash drifted down from an indigo sky, blanketing the jagged volcanic ridges of Tier Three in a soft, suffocating drift. But as Kyle stepped off the threshold stone, the ash-choked wind shifted violently, swirling into a wide, unnatural funnel that parted the red clouds ahead.
They weren’t standing on a mountain slope at all.
They were standing on the cracked edge of a colossal, suspended continent—a broken chunk of a realm suspended inside a vast, hollow pocket of space. Spanning the horizon before them was the ruin of a magnificent, white-and-gold city. Gargantuan alabaster colonnades lay snapped like dry tinder, grand amphitheaters were split down the center by jagged fissures of dark violet fire, and sprawling palaces sat submerged in drifts of pale-grey dust.
Suspended directly above the ruined city’s central plaza hung a massive, shattered signet forged from black iron and tarnished brass, carved in the likeness of two intertwined serpents encircling a lightning bolt and a blooming lotus.
"This isn’t a natural floor," Seraphina said softly, her ocean trident held horizontally as her water domain flared, forming a tight, protective sphere of liquid-blue mist around her boots to repel the sulfurous heat. "The spatial architecture... it’s completely isolated from the Spire’s main transit lattice. Someone detached this realm and grafted it onto Tier Three."
"Look at the masonry," Falcon added, stepping up to Kyle’s left. Her golden eyes narrowed as she studied a broken marble archway fifty yards ahead. Her four dark brown tails swished slowly, small sparks of green poison-lightning flickering along their tips as they reacted to the heavy, lingering divine pressure in the air. "That’s not mortal work. The stone doesn’t have tool marks. It was sung into shape."
Yua walked right to the edge of the fractured precipice, peering down at a massive, sunken courtyard filled with petrified statues of winged soldiers locked in mid-battle. "Whatever happened here, it wasn’t a quick siege. Look at the burn marks on those statues—they were blasted from the inside out."
Kyle didn’t answer immediately. He stood motionless in his dark coat, his pitch-black gauntlet resting against the hilt of his dark shadow blade.
Inside his chest, his newly evolved Demon Knight core was vibrating with an unfamiliar, heavy frequency. The Lightning-Core Spatial Ring on his right index finger hummed in direct resonance with the air of the ruined city, drawing in small wisps of the drifting ash and filtering them into refined spatial energy.
’Snow,’ Kyle commanded silently. ’Analyze the lingering mana signature in this sub-dimension.’
’Scanning Tier 3 sub-realm,’ Snow’s melodic voice echoed inside his mind space. ’Warning: High density of decayed divine authority detected. Primary atmospheric residue belongs to two distinct high-tier entities: Tempest and Eros. Spatial integrity of this chamber—designated in ancient records as The Middle Pavilion—is decaying at a rate of 0.02% per hour.’
’Tempest?’ Kyle questioned internally.
’Processing ancient archives extracted from the white drake-hide scroll,’ Snow detailed, displaying intricate golden runes across his retinas. ’Entity Tempest: Formerly a High Divine of the Second Order, governing atmospheric thunder, spatial kinetic weight, and celestial storms. Entity Eros: A primordial deity governing desire, soul-binding, and emotional resonance.’
Kyle gestured for the team to follow as he began walking down the shattered alabaster road leading into the heart of the sunken city. "Keep your guards tight. This realm wasn’t built by the Spire’s original architects. It was created as a sanctuary—or a prison—for two fallen entities."
"Fallen entities?" Falcon asked, her ears twitching as she scanned the silent, ash-covered alleyways on either side of the road. "You mean gods?"
"Fallen gods," Kyle corrected, his slitted dark eyes tracking the dark violet fissures running through the stone floor. "Tempest and Eros."
Seraphina’s posture stiffened slightly at the names, her blue eyes widening as she recalled ancient texts locked within the deepest vaults of the Lumia Kingdom’s royal archives. "Tempest... the God of Storms? The legends in the lower realms said he vanished during the Great Collapse, but the temple records never mentioned his connection to Eros."
"Because the temple records were sanitized," Kyle said flatly, his boots crunching against a pile of calcified bone dust. "Snow’s archive scan from the scroll shows they weren’t just allies. They shared a deeper, soul-bound connection—identical to twin brothers forged from the same primordial nexus. Tempest held the raw, unyielding kinetic weight of the skies, while Eros held the emotional and spiritual tether that anchored Tempest’s chaotic domain to reality."
"A storm needs an anchor," Falcon realized, her golden eyes flashing with understanding. "Without Eros holding his soul lattice stable, Tempest’s thunder would have torn his own divinity apart."
"Exactly," Kyle said. "They ruled the Middle Chamber of the Pavilion—a separate realm crafted specifically for the pantheon of lesser deities and high-born followers who pledged allegiance to the duo during the ancient wars."
"So what broke it?" Yua asked, her claws extending slightly as she kicked a shattered stone helmet out of her path. "If they were so tight, why does this whole place look like it was put through a meat grinder?"
They reached the edge of the central plaza—a vast, circular amphitheater spanned by five concentric rings of broken white marble benches.
In the center of the amphitheater stood a gargantuan monument carved from black obsidian. The monument depicted two figures standing back-to-back: one a towering warrior clad in heavy storm-plate armor holding a crackling spear of liquid thunder, and the other a slender, winged figure draped in flowing robes, holding a golden thread that wrapped around the warrior’s chest.
However, the monument was violently defaced. A deep, jagged strike—infused with black void fire that was still smoldering three centuries later—had sheared the slender, winged figure straight through the chest, leaving the storm warrior standing alone, his carved face twisted in a silent, eternal roar of agony.
At the base of the monument sat an ancient, stone altar inscribed with glowing, blood-red runes that had not been dulled by time.
"Look at the inscription," Seraphina said, stepping forward and kneeling near the base of the altar. She cleared away a thick layer of grey ash with a gentle flick of her trident’s water veil, exposing the carved text beneath. "It’s written in the high celestial script..."
"Read it," Kyle commanded softly, standing behind her with his hands resting on his gauntlets.
Seraphina traced her fingers above the glowing red runes, her voice quiet and melodic as she translated the ancient words:
"’When the Great Fall consumed the upper tiers, the Void corrupted the heart of the Pavilion. Eros sought to preserve the followers by binding their souls to the lower realm, weaving a web of eternal desire to anchor their consciousness before the void could devour them. But Tempest saw the binding as a betrayal—a degradation of divine pride, reducing noble warriors to slaves of mortal lust and endless hunger.’"
Seraphina paused, her breath catching in her throat as she read the next line.
"’The conflict erupted in the Middle Chamber. Tempest, blinded by his refusal to accept their fallen state, turned his thunder upon his brother. In the riot that followed, the Pavilion fractured. Eros severed his own soul-thread to save the remaining followers, dropping them into the lower realms, while Tempest locked himself within this dross-covered sanctuary, consumed by the madness of his own unyielding storm.’"
The air in the amphitheater grew instantly colder.
Falcon let out a quiet sigh, looking around at the petrified statues of winged soldiers scattered across the marble steps. "They didn’t fall to invaders. They destroyed themselves from the inside."
"Eros tried to save them through lust and desire—using raw emotional ties to keep their souls tethered," Yua muttered, her red eyes fixing on the defaced monument. "And Tempest was too proud to let his people become degenerates, so he chose to kill his own brother and bury them all in ash."
"A tragic classic," Kyle said, his voice flat, grounded, and entirely devoid of pity. "Pride versus survival. And in the end, neither won."
RUMBLE-THUD!
The black obsidian monument in the center of the plaza suddenly trembled violently.
The smoldering void strike across the winged figure flared with a brilliant, blinding crimson light, and the deep violet fissures in the marble floor widened, erupting with thick geysers of dark, lightning-infused ash that shot fifty feet into the sky!
" Kyle!" Falcon barked, her four dark brown tails expanding instantly, green poison-lightning crackling along their length as she took a defensive stance in front of Seraphina.
From the deep, ash-choked fissure beneath the defaced monument, a towering figure began to rise.
It was eight feet tall, clad in ruined, dark-violet storm armor that was scorched black by centuries of void exposure. Its head was encased in a heavy, horned visor that emitted two steady beams of blinding pale-gold light, and in its right hand, it held a gargantuan, ten-foot spear forged from solid, crackling thunder that hissed as it touched the ash-covered air.
The lingering mana radiating from the creature was terrifying—a suffocating mixture of decayed divine authority, raw lightning, and bitter, centuries-old grief.
"Who treads... upon the tomb of the Pavilion...?" the entity’s voice boomed, sounding like two tectonic plates grinding together over a roaring hurricane.
The creature raised its thunder spear, the pale-gold light from its visor locking directly onto Kyle’s dark, calm frame.
"Have you come... to speak the name of Eros...?" the entity roared, its voice rising into a deafening, psychotic crescendo that shattered the remaining alabaster pillars around the plaza into fine dust. "Or have you come... to die in his ash?!"
"Neither," Kyle replied coldly, stepping past Seraphina and Falcon until he stood at the very front of the team.
He raised his right gauntlet, the Lightning-Core Spatial Ring on his index finger glowing with a steady, pale-blue light that absorbed the pressure of the entity’s divine storm. His slitted dark eyes met the golden beams of the creature’s visor without a single trace of fear.
"You are Tempest," Kyle stated flatly, his dark shadow blade sliding smoothly from its scabbard with a sharp, lethal metallic SHING. "A fallen god clinging to a dead kingdom. Clear the path, or I will put an end to your storm permanently."
The ancient, ash-draped remnant of the God of Storms let out a wild, grief-stricken roar, raising its thunder spear into the sky as a massive storm of crimson lightning erupted across the ruined Pavilion, setting the stage for their most dangerous battle yet.
