Chapter 489: Remnants Of The Pavilion (2)
The creature rising from the broken altar was not the God of Storms in the flesh.
As the violent plume of crimson lightning cut through the ash-choked sky, Kyle’s spatial perception mapped the entity’s internal structure in a single, silent instant. Beneath the scorched violet plate armor and the terrifying, oppressive aura, there was no biological core, no divine spark, and no beating soul.
It was a lingering memory—a condensed husk of Tempest’s bitterest grief, animated by centuries of unrefined thunder mana and the decaying spatial energy of the Middle Pavilion. A spectral phantom forged from the last act of violence that had shattered this realm.
"It’s an Echo," Kyle said, his voice flat, steady, and loud enough to cut through the screeching gale. "A divine remnant. Don’t waste your high-tier domains trying to sever its soul—it doesn’t have one."
"A ghost made of lightning and spite?" Yua grinned, her dark red blood-mana erupting around her arms like two swirling tornados, now laced with the bright purple sparks of her newly refined thunder-core. "Works for me! A shell still shatters if you hit it hard enough!"
"Watch the spear!" Seraphina warned, her ocean trident held high as she expanded her domain into a dense, translucent sphere of sea-water that orbited their group. The water didn’t boil under the heat; instead, it crackled with violet thunder, absorbing the atmospheric shockwaves before they could hit the ground. "Even as a remnant, the kinetic weight behind that thunder is divine-tier!"
"Intruders..." the Echo of Tempest rumbled, its stone-like voice grinding out from the depths of its horned visor. The two golden beams of light flared, locking onto Kyle’s dark coat. "You carry... the key of the architects... yet you bring no peace to the fallen! You stand upon the grave of my betrayal!"
KA-THUUUUUUM!
The Echo did not march; it translated through space like a lightning bolt, appearing ten feet above Kyle’s head in a fraction of a millisecond. It brought the ten-foot thunder spear down with both hands, the weapon descending like a falling mountain of compressed, pale-gold electricity.
Kyle didn’t dodge.
He didn’t draw back his shadow blade to parry the massive blow. Instead, he raised his left hand, opening his iron-clad gauntlet directly beneath the point of the descending spear.
The Lightning-Core Spatial Ring on his index finger flared with a blinding, pale-blue light.
SHHH-THUMP!
The strike that should have pulverized the alabaster plaza into gravel stopped dead three inches above Kyle’s palm. The mountain of compressed thunder didn’t explode—it was violently drawn inward, swirling into a tight, vortex-like funnel that was sucked straight into the spatial ring’s secondary reservoir.
The Echo’s horned visor flickered violently as its weapon lost nearly forty percent of its kinetic weight in a single instant. "What... what manner of void is this...?!"
"You’re old news," Kyle said softly, his slitted dark eyes reflecting the fading gold light of the spear. "And your storm is out of time."
Kyle flexed his Demon Knight core, driving a short-range spatial shockwave straight through the shaft of the spear.
BANG!
The kinetic feedback blasted the eight-foot remnant backward, sending its heavy, scorched armor skittering thirty yards across the broken marble floor.
"Falcon! Now!" Kyle commanded.
Falcon was already airborne. She launched herself off the top of a fallen alabaster column, all four of her dark brown tails fully expanded behind her like a fiery crimson fan. But the fire was no longer just green—it was a terrifying hybrid of endothermic green poison-fire and localized, high-frequency purple lightning.
"Poison-Thunder Art: Glacial Strike!" Falcon roared, her golden eyes burning with fierce focus.
She brought all four tails down in a crushing, downward arc. The hybrid flames didn’t spread out; they shot forward in four concentrated, frozen spears of green lightning that slammed directly into the Echo’s chest plate.
The result was instantaneous and brutal. The endothermic frost sucked the thermal energy out of the remnant’s armor in a split second, while the purple lightning disrupted the internal mana conduits holding the shell together. Deep, glowing cracks snapped across the scorched violet plate with sharp, metallic CLACKS.
"Yua, tear the core frame!" Falcon yelled as she landed cleanly on her feet, her tails swishing behind her to clear the ice-smoke.
"Already on it!" Yua’s voice echoed from right beside the stumbling remnant.
She moved with wild, terrifying speed, blurring past the Echo’s left flank. Her pale hands were completely encased in heavy gauntlets of dark purple blood-electricity. She drove her open palm straight into the largest crack in the creature’s chest armor, her razor-sharp claws digging deep into the dense, lightning-infused stone beneath.
"Blood-Burst: Internal Shatter!" Yua screamed, baring her white fangs in a feral grin.
She detonated her blood-mana directly inside the armor cavity.
BOOOOOOM!
A violent, purple-and-crimson shockwave erupted from the back of the remnant’s chest plate. The heavy violet armor exploded outward in a shower of scorched metal fragments and sparkling golden dust, revealing the hollow, glowing core of divine residual mana that held the Echo together.
"Seraphina!" Yua shouted, leaping backward to avoid the sudden, unstable arc of wild lightning spewing from the exposed core. "Finish it!"
Seraphina stepped forward, her royal blue hair whipping in the wind, her posture completely calm and majestic. She held her ocean trident with both hands, driving the butt of the staff hard into the obsidian floor of the plaza.
"Sea-Storm Domain: Torrential Lock!" Seraphina declared softly.
The three liquid ribbons of sea-water orbiting her shoulders shot forward like striking vipers, wrapping tightly around the Echo’s limbs and pulling its heavy, broken frame to its knees. The sea-water, infused with her newly refined thunder domain, locked the remnant’s remaining electrical output in a complete, grounded circuit, preventing it from gathering energy for another spatial leap.
The Echo of Tempest knelt in the center of the ruined amphitheater, its horned visor tilted upward, looking past Seraphina, past Falcon and Yua, straight at Kyle, who was walking slowly toward it with his shadow blade held at his side.
The golden light within its visor was fading, replaced by a soft, pale blue that looked strangely peaceful.
"The key... has returned..." the remnant’s voice rumbled, no longer screeching or psychotic, but soft, hollow, and exhausted like a dying breeze. "Tell me... Ascendant... does the light of Eros... still shine in the lower realms...?"
Kyle stopped three paces from the kneeling remnant. He didn’t offer a false comfort, nor did he mock the ghost’s centuries of regret.
"Eros saved his people," Kyle said quietly, his voice grounded and absolute. "Their descendants built a kingdom. They survived."
The Echo of Tempest went silent for a long beat. Then, slowly, the heavy horned head gave a single, quiet nod of acceptance.
"Then... my guard... is finished..."
Kyle raised his shadow blade, bringing the sleek, black steel down in a smooth, effortless arc through the center of the exposed golden core.
SHING.
The blade passed through the residual mana without resistance. The glowing core fractured into a million tiny, sparkling specks of gold and violet light that drifted upward into the ash-choked sky, dissolving into the atmosphere of the Middle Pavilion. The heavy, scorched violet armor collapsed into a silent pile of hollow, empty metal plates against the marble floor.
As the divine remnant vanished, the suffocating heat and the rust-colored ash drifting through the air began to clear. The dark violet fissures in the ground sealed themselves, and the sky above shifted from a violent indigo to a soft, clear twilight, revealing the true path forward.
At the far end of the amphitheater, behind the defaced monument of the two brothers, a gargantuan, golden archway materialized out of the thin air. The archway was carved with intricate patterns of storm clouds and blooming lotus flowers, pulsating with a warm, steady light that led straight into the true ascent toward the upper floors of the Spire.
Yua let out a long, satisfied sigh, shaking out her wrists as her blood-mana retracted back beneath her skin. "Well... that was intense for a ghost. A real god back in the day must have been a complete nightmare to deal with."
"They were," Seraphina said, lower her trident as her ocean domain smoothly faded back into her core. "Which is why their fall was so catastrophic. If two entities of that caliber turned their power against each other, it’s a miracle the Spire’s lower middle tiers survived at all."
Falcon walked over to the pile of scorched armor, using the toe of her boot to nudge a small, glowing stone that had fallen from the remnant’s chest core. It was a smooth, teardrop-shaped crystal that shifted between pale gold and deep violet, humming with a pure, concentrated essence of dual-element mana.
She picked it up, tossing it casually over to Kyle. "Loot, boss. Looks like a divine core remnant."
Kyle caught the teardrop crystal effortlessly in his gauntleted hand.
’Diagnostic update,’ Snow reported smoothly in his mind. ’Item acquired: Tear of the Storm-Binder. High-grade catalyst containing refined spatial-thunder and soul-anchor mana. Can be used to permanently upgrade weapon resonance or expand domain stability.’
Kyle stowed the crystal directly into his new Lightning-Core Spatial Ring, feeling the secondary battery absorb its lingering energy.
He looked at his team—Seraphina standing tall with her trident, Falcon relaxing her four dark brown tails, and Yua wiping dust off her trousers with a smirk. They had faced the lingering shadow of a fallen god’s heartbreak and raw power, and they hadn’t cracked for a single second.
"The Middle Pavilion is cleared," Kyle said, his dark coat sweeping around his calves as he turned toward the glowing golden archway. "Tier Three is open. Let’s move."
With their cores refined, their resolve unbroken, and their sight set on the long road toward the highest tiers, Kyle Conner led his party through the gateway, ascending into the next difficulty of the Spire.
