Triple X System
Chapter 479: A Breathing Chance
The golden light spilling through the ancient double doors did not scorch or blind; it felt warm, heavy, and thick with ancient, unrefined mana that smelled like sun-baked granite and ozone. It washed over the ruined hall, bathing the floating marble fragments, the shattered pillars, and the three exhausted women in a serene, amber glow that rendered the dark bloodstains on the floor starkly visible.
Kyle stood near the threshold, his dark coat hanging motionless in the sudden stillness. For the first time since they had breached the Blood Moon Fortress, the persistent, heavy pressure of the plateau’s oppressive aura was gone.
Inside his chest, a deep and profound shift took root. The raw, violent energy harvested from Lord Cassian’s downfall didn’t just mend his aching meridians—it restructured the very framework of his power. The chaotic, fiery dark core that had driven his instincts for so long dissolved, reforming into something far more structured, lethal, and refined. His class had evolved, solidifying his transition into a Demon Knight.
With that change, the violent demon fire churning inside his soul settled into a dense, midnight-black orb surrounded by a faint ring of pale-blue spatial light. He raised his right hand, flexing his fingers inside the dark gauntlet. The metal responded instantly, feeling lighter, smoother, almost like an extension of his own skin rather than heavy forged armor. The lingering strain in his arms vanished, replaced by an smooth, oceanic current of dark mana that moved at a simple thought.
Fifty feet behind him, a heavy thud echoed across the quiet hall.
Falcon had unceremoniously collapsed onto her back against a flat marble block, her legs stretched out and her arms spread wide. Her four dark brown tails lay limp against the stone, completely drained of their usual vibrant emerald fire. Sweat glistened on her dark skin, running down the side of her temple and soaking into her collar.
"If anyone asks me to throw another poison-fire whip in the next twenty-four hours," Falcon groaned, her golden eyes fixed lazily on the vaulted ceiling, "I’m going to bite their throat out. I swear my tails feel like they’re filled with lead."
"Your tail form was sloppy on the third strike anyway," Yua remarked, walking over with a heavy limp.
She dropped down on the edge of the same stone fragment, wincing slightly as she pulled her left boot off to inspect a severe black-and-purple bruise wrapping around her ankle—a gift from Cassian’s final spatial recoil. She reached into her waist pouch, pulled out a small, dried red root, and began chewing on it with loud, aggressive crunches. "You leaned too far left when you frost-cracked the cable casing. If Cassian had turned his head, he would’ve sheared your left tail clean off."
Falcon didn’t open her eyes, but one of her dark brown tails twitched slightly, its tip flicking a tiny speck of stone toward Yua’s shin. "I hit the target, didn’t I? Cable Three snapped like a dry twig. Worry about your own arms, blood-fiend—you almost let your hands get vaporized inside the root cluster."
"Almost doesn’t count in a slaughter," Yua retorted, spitting a bit of bitter red pulp onto the floor. But despite her sharp words, the manic, dangerous edge in her tone had melted away, replaced by a deep, weary satisfaction. She looked down at her blood-stained claws, then over at Cassian’s headless corpse lying in the spatial void below. "He really thought he was a god up there. Old fool."
A few yards away, Seraphina sat cross-legged on a floating slab, her ocean trident resting horizontally across her lap. She had pulled a silk cloth from her tunic and was carefully wiping down the three pale-blue prongs of her weapon, removing the dried crimson residue and stone dust. Her royal azure hair hung loose over her shoulders, damp with sweat, but her posture remained straight, aristocratic, and composed.
When Kyle turned around and walked over to them, Seraphina paused her cleaning, looking up with her deep blue eyes. She immediately picked up on the subtle change in the air surrounding him—the way the ambient shadows seemed to bend slightly inward toward his posture, resting around his boots like obedient hounds.
"How are you holding up?" Seraphina asked, her voice soft and carrying a genuine warmth that broke through her usual formal tone. "You took the brunt of his spatial pressure at the end, Kyle. Holding him in place while we struck the cables... the recoil should have shattered your arm."
"I’m whole," Kyle answered, stopping beside her block. He looked down at the three of them, his slitted dark eyes softening just a fraction. "The breakthrough stabilized my core. My class changed—I’m a Demon Knight now. The recoil strain is gone, and my mana is running cleaner than it was before the fight started."
Seraphina let out a quiet sigh of relief, offering a faint nod. "A Demon Knight... the foundation of your authority is growing heavier. I can feel it in the air."
"Must be nice breaking through while the rest of us feel like we were run over by a siege wagon," Falcon muttered from the floor, though a faint, genuine smirk played on her lips. She rolled onto her side, propping her head up on her elbow to look at him. "So, Boss... what did we actually get from that old leech, besides almost dying three times?"
Kyle raised his right hand, palm facing upward.
With a soft, melodic hum, a faint violet light flared on his skin, and the key they had torn from the throne materialized above his palm. The intricate crystal lattice had shrunk down to the size of an elongated dagger, its pale-blue spatial mana pulsing in steady, rhythmic waves that harmonized with the breathing of everyone in the room.
"This is the master key for the core matrix," Kyle said, letting the key hover between them. "Cassian was using it as a crude battery to siphon power into his throne. But its actual function is a spatial bridge. It neutralizes the dangerous spatial disruptions on the upper floors, opens the sealed passages, and gives us administrative authority over the High Plateau’s defenses."
Seraphina’s eyes widened slightly as she studied the intricate floating key. "Administrative authority? Does that mean..."
"It means the Blood Moon Fortress is ours," Kyle confirmed, his voice calm and decisive. "The defensive barriers, the hidden vaults beneath the mountain, and the spatial portals connecting this plateau to the lower valleys—we control all of it now. Once we step through those golden doors, no regional faction or leftover vampire thrall can break into this fortress from the outside."
Yua let out a low whistle, her red eyes sparkling with greedy delight. "A fortress on top of the world. Not a bad upgrade from sleeping in damp caves and beast-dens."
"We aren’t turning this into a permanent home just yet," Kyle said, looking back toward the massive double doors glowing with golden light. "The path ahead is open, but Cassian’s final words weren’t entirely baseless. The higher tiers aren’t just empty rooms waiting to be looted. They are active trial grounds built by entities far older than anything we’ve fought down here."
Falcon sat up, sweeping her dark brown hair back over her shoulder. Her expression turned serious as she looked at the open gateway. "You think there are worse things than Cassian up there?"
"Cassian was a big fish in a small, stagnant pond," Kyle replied, his dark shadow blade reappearing at his side before dissolving cleanly into the shadows near his feet. "He spent centuries sitting on a stolen throne, consuming blood-mana and getting fat on easy power. He lost his edge long ago. The forces that built this Spire—or the conquerors who pushed deeper before us—operate on a completely different level."
He paused, letting his gaze rest on each of them.
"We take thirty minutes," Kyle commanded smoothly. "Falcon, pull out a recovery potion and get those tail channels working again. Yua, bind your ankle properly and clear the blood-toxins out of your system. Seraphina, focus on restoring your ocean domain reserves. When we step through those doors, I want all of us ready for whatever is waiting on the other side."
"Understood," Seraphina said, nodding firmly as she closed her eyes, instantly entering a state of deep, measured breathing to circulate her water element.
Falcon reached into her pouch, pulled out a small glass vial filled with glowing blue liquid, and downed it in a single gulp, wiping her mouth with a heavy sigh. "Thirty minutes. I’m holding you to every second, Kyle."
Yua grunted in approval, wrapping a tight length of black cloth around her sprained ankle while humming a low, rhythmic battle chant under her breath to force her blood circulation to speed up the healing.
Kyle walked toward the edge of the floating dais, looking down into the massive, silent abyss left behind by the ruined throne. Outside, the purple twilight sky was slowly clearing, revealing a vast, starry expanse that stretched across the sharp mountain peaks of the High Plateau. The cold wind whispered through the broken windows, but it no longer carried the heavy stench of blood and decay—only the crisp, pristine promise of the open sky.
He looked past the edge, peering directly through the Threshold of Gold. Beyond the doors lay a grand, marble-paved avenue flanked by massive, ancient white pillars that stretched upward into an artificial sky filled with floating, luminous orbs. The air in that corridor was thick, humming with a density of mana that was easily three times stronger than the atmosphere on the plateau outside.
’It’s going to be heavy in there,’ Kyle thought to himself, feeling the natural weight of the threshold’s atmosphere calling out to his core. In an environment with mana that dense, every spell, every strike, and every movement would carry twice as much force—but it would also punish anyone who lost control of their breath or let their guard down for a single second.
He looked back at his companions. Falcon was flex-stretching her tails, small sparks of green poison flame beginning to dance across the tips once more. Yua was testing her weight on her re-bound foot, gritting her teeth through the pain until her stride smoothed out. Seraphina sat enveloped in a calm, misty aura of soft blue light, her breathing deep and even as her strength rapidly returned.
The battle for the Blood Moon was finished. The line of Lord Cassian had ended on the ash-covered steps of his own palace, his body cast into the void, his fortress claimed by those he had dismissed as mere invaders.
Kyle adjusted his dark gauntlet one last time, feeling the powerful, steady beat of his renewed Demon Knight core thrumming inside his chest. The lower floors had been a forge, burning away their mistakes and forcing them to adapt or die. But ahead lay the true trials—a path carved through ancient history and dangerous realms.
When the thirty minutes expired, they stood up together. Without another word, Kyle turned and led them toward the golden light.
