Transmigrated as the Villain Boss's Precious Darling
Chapter 790 The Confession Implicates Bernice
Mrs. Green’s back pain had eased considerably, and her alertness returned. She watched Mr. Yates warily. ‘When a man is overly attentive for no reason, he must be up to no good,’ she thought. She was certain this Mr. Yates had improper designs on her daughter.
Although she was grateful for Mr. Yates’s immense help, Mrs. Green was still not satisfied with him.
First, he wasn’t as handsome as Ethan Hawthorne. With that big scar on his face, he looked like one of those guys from the Axe Gang, not a respectable person.
Second, Mrs. Green didn’t know what Mr. Yates did for a living. She assumed he really just ran some small business, so his career couldn’t compare to Ethan Hawthorne’s.
Third, Mr. Yates had an out-of-town accent; he definitely wasn’t from Tristone.
Besides, a first marriage is always best. Her daughter and Ethan Hawthorne already had a son. Unless it was absolutely necessary, Mrs. Green would never agree to a divorce.
“Rosalind, I’d like some ginger-brown sugar tea. Mince the ginger finely and boil it for a while,” Mrs. Green said abruptly.
“I’ll go make it right now.”
Rosalind Green suspected nothing and obediently went to the kitchen to make the tea. Mr. Yates’s eyes glinted. Astute as he was, he saw through Mrs. Green’s intentions at a glance. But he wasn’t discouraged. ‘Time reveals a person’s heart,’ he thought. ‘My future mother-in-law will eventually learn who is truly the right match for her daughter.’
“Mr. Yates, thank you so much for tonight. When my son-in-law gets back, I’ll be sure to have him thank you personally.” Mrs. Green emphasized the words “son-in-law,” making it clear to Mr. Yates that her daughter was a married woman and not to be trifled with.
Mr. Yates smiled. “I know your son-in-law. We have business dealings. Your grandson does business with me too.”
However, he had already had Ace cut off Ethan Hawthorne’s supply. Without Ethan, there were plenty of others waiting in line. Many people wanted to do business with him; he didn’t need Ethan Hawthorne.
Mrs. Green was very surprised. It sounded like this Mr. Yates’s business was quite substantial. Still, she didn’t want Rosalind Green to get involved with him. It wouldn’t be proper, and it would ruin her daughter’s reputation.
A noise came from outside. Mr. Yates’s expression darkened, and he strode out of the house. The three thugs had woken up but couldn’t get to their feet. They lay on the ground, groaning. When they saw the ferocious-looking Mr. Yates, the three thugs realized they were in trouble. They propped themselves up with their hands and tried to back away, but the more anxious they became, the less strength they could muster. After struggling for a long time, they were still just scrambling in place.
“Trying to run?”
Mr. Yates sneered. His gaze made them feel as if they were already dead. Knowing they were in deep trouble, the three thugs kowtowed and begged for mercy. “Boss, spare us! We were just paid to do a job, we didn’t mean any harm! Please, Boss, let us go!”
Mr. Yates, who had been about to cripple the three of them, stayed his hand. “Who hired you?” he demanded in a cold voice.
‘This matter is more complicated than I thought,’ he mused. ‘The beauty is still in danger. I have to solve this problem for good.’
“It was a beautiful woman. She gave us four thousand to… take care of this mother and son.” The three thugs didn’t dare to hide anything and confessed everything.
“How did she want you to ‘take care of them’?” Mr. Yates’s voice grew even colder. An icy chill radiated from him, making the three thugs’ hearts pound in terror. Not daring to lie about a single detail, they spilled everything.
“The woman said that after we… did the deed, we should dump the woman in a conspicuous place in the village so everyone would know what happened to her. Then we were to ‘take care of’ her son. She said it would be best to take the kid’s life. But if we couldn’t, we had to at least cripple him. Boss, we weren’t going to kill the kid, really… We were just gonna do it and leave tonight. We don’t want to have a death on our hands… Boss, please spare us…”
Mr. Yates bared his stark white teeth, which seemed to radiate a cold aura in the darkness. The three thugs trembled, not knowing how Mr. Yates would deal with them. They could only pray that they would be allowed to keep their lives.
