Mr. Yates then said, “I know a little about therapeutic massage. If you don’t mind, I can give your mother a massage.”

“Thank you, Mr. Yates. Please, help my mom.” Rosalind trusted Mr. Yates completely, not doubting his abilities in the slightest.

Moments before, during her greatest peril, Mr. Yates had descended like a divine savior, radiating a brilliant, 24-karat titanium aura that had lit up her dark world. In Rosalind’s eyes, he was an all-powerful hero. She would believe anything he said.

Mr. Yates savored Rosalind’s absolute trust. He loved the feeling of being unconditionally worshipped and relied upon by a woman he desired. No matter the issue, big or small, he wanted her to think of him first, not try to solve it on her own.

As for compliments praising women for being capable or formidable—sayings like “women are equal to men” or “women hold up half the sky”—Mr. Yates had always scoffed at them.

If a woman was holding up half the sky, powerful as a superhero, it could only mean one thing—

The man by her side was utterly useless.

If a man were truly capable, how would the woman beside him ever have the chance to become a superwoman?

‘Ultimately, it’s because the man is a failure that the woman is forced to become an “Iron Lady.” He couldn’t meddle in other men’s marriages, but his woman—once she was with him—would never have to worry about a single thing again.’

‘He would be responsible for making a living and supporting the family; all she had to do was stay at home, look pretty, and enjoy life.’

Mr. Yates had Rosalind help turn Mrs. Green onto her stomach and began the massage. He had formally studied the art, and his technique was excellent. After just a few motions, Mrs. Green’s pain had lessened considerably, and she couldn’t stop praising him.

“Mr. Yates, are you a physician specializing in injuries? Your technique is incredible. I feel so much better now.”

“Not a doctor. I just run a small business,” Mr. Yates replied courteously, doing his best to suppress the passion raging inside him. ‘The time isn’t right,’ he thought. ‘I can’t frighten this beauty away.’

Even though he’d only met Rosalind three times, Mr. Yates had already sized up her character. ‘She definitely came from a scholarly family, not the sort to be flighty or frivolous. If I want this beauty to come to me of her own free will, I have to treat her with the utmost courtesy.’

Mr. Yates already had a plan. ‘I have to push for Rosalind and Ethan Hawthorne’s divorce. I bitterly regret the bullshit advice I’d given Adrian Hawthorne before. What fucking reconciliation? A bastard like Ethan Hawthorne should have been kicked to the curb ages ago.’

‘But it’s not too late now.’ Mr. Yates was resolute. ‘First step: win over the mother-in-law. Rosalind is a dutiful daughter. As long as I can win her mother over, the rest will be easy.’

With that in mind, Mr. Yates put even more effort into the massage, and beads of sweat formed on his forehead. Deeply grateful, Rosalind went to steep a cup of tea. “Mr. Yates, please rest for a moment. Have some tea.”

Mr. Yates happened to be thirsty. He took the cup, drained it in one gulp, and praised, “Excellent tea. Is this Longjing?”

Rosalind pursed her lips into a smile. “No, it’s a wild tea I picked on the mountain and roasted myself.”

“You roasted this exceptionally well. It’s even better than Longjing. Could I trouble you for another cup? I haven’t had tea this good in a long, long time.”

Mr. Yates was lavish with his praise, extolling the simple tea to the heavens. Rosalind’s eyes curved into crescents as she smiled, the lingering fear from her encounter with the three thugs nearly gone. She poured him another cup, and again, he drained it in a single gulp.

He chugged three cups in a row before his stomach couldn’t take another drop, and only then did he stop. He followed up with several more compliments. Rosalind smiled, her delight written all over her face. ‘I never would have guessed that someone as rugged-looking as Mr. Yates could be so well-spoken. It’s been so long since anyone complimented me… I’m so happy!’
