He still remembered the flutter in his heart when he first met Melody Monroe.

The type of girl he liked was someone like her.

The only reason he was so flustered was because of Jasper Rockwell’s actions.

‘That impulsive moment just now was definitely not because of Jasper Rockwell!’

Zane Langdon stomped on the gas, and the car sped off into the night.

…

Melody Monroe thought all morning but still didn’t know what would be a good gift to buy for Sweetie.

Holding her tablet, she sat on the rocking chair on the balcony and searched online, hoping to find some suitable options.

Evan Fairchild came over with a glass of water and leaned on Melody’s shoulder.

The rocking chair lurched from his movement.

Melody quickly steadied her tablet and glanced at Evan Fairchild.

“Why are you up so early?” Evan set down the water glass and hugged her tightly.

“Aren’t you still jet-lagged? You should sleep in. After only a short nap, you’ve basically been awake for two days and two nights.”

“You’re not coming to sleep with me?”

“I’m wide awake. On workdays, I get up at seven. Today I didn’t get up until eight-thirty.”

“Still looking for a gift for Tubby? You’ve been agonizing over this for a while. She’s just a kid, can’t you just buy her anything?”

“I’ve decided.”

“What are you getting?”

“You get some proper sleep. I’m meeting up with Rose to go out for a bit.”

“So you’ve decided what to buy?”

“I want to buy her a gemstone, one for each birthday. By the time Sweetie turns eighteen, she’ll have just enough to form the shape of a constellation—her guardian constellation.”

“Guardian constellation?” Evan Fairchild looked at the tablet in Melody’s hands, waking the screen to take a look.

“Shawn Fisher is that Tubby’s guardian angel. What does she need a guardian constellation for?”

“What if, one day, by a twist of fate, even her guardian angel can’t protect her?”

Evan’s hand paused as he scrolled on the tablet. He felt that Melody had an indescribable emotion towards Shawn Fisher’s family—avoidance, guilt… In short, he couldn’t quite put his finger on it either.

But that was just the feeling he got.

“Your feelings for Sweetie are very complicated.”

Melody met his gaze and nodded lightly.

He was so perceptive; it was as if he could see right through her.

But she didn’t know how to explain any of it to him. Since she’d arrived, some things had changed, but others seemed to be following their original path.

She didn’t even know what the future held.

Suddenly, the phone she’d set aside began to ring.

Melody glanced at the caller ID and said to Evan, “Rose is here. I’m heading out. You should go back to sleep. Come with me to Sweetie’s birthday party tonight.”

“Okay.” Evan kissed her on the cheek and stood up.

Melody got up and went downstairs. Rose Shaw’s car was just pulling up outside.

“Decided where we’re going?”

“Yep.” Melody opened the car door and got in. “I have my eye on a jewelry collection.”

…

Jasper Rockwell rolled over, fell out of bed, and woke with a start.

He looked around, scrambled to his feet, and then suddenly, his legs went rigid.

‘Fuck, it hurts!’

And the pain was in an… unmentionable place.

‘What happened last night?’

‘I kind of blacked out!’

Jasper Rockwell started to panic. The thought of that aching spot sent a wave of dread through him.

‘Where am I? This isn’t my little apartment!’

He immediately walked toward the door, and as soon as he pulled it open and saw the surroundings, he knew exactly where he was.

This was Zane Langdon’s place.
