Chapter 314: His Wound Had to Fit the Body He Kept

  • Next Chapter

Six loose feathers waited inside the drain catch.

They had separated during Jiang’s three circulation proofs, not from the wounded line along his wake keel. The zone had collected them instead of claiming them. Each carried his current oilcoat and sixty-five-percent molt signature.

[MOLT FEATHER INVENTORY]

[Naturally separated feathers6]

[Owner:Jiang]

[Prior retained feather loss4 unchanged]

[Use requires subject acceptance]

The first anatomy seal stood behind the recovery shore. Its entrance was thirty-three centimeters high and forty-eight wide, enough for Jiang’s chest if he lowered his head and flattened the outer feather layer.

Halfway through, the ceiling descended another three centimeters.

A strip of soft mesh crossed the lowest section. The six loose feathers could attach to it and form a molt-matched compression surface over the one-centimeter wound.

Jiang examined the bend beyond the low section. The route turned forty-five degrees before opening into a deeper water seal.

Feather Mail appeared on the comparison plate.

[Anatomy proof contribution0]

The skill could protect him from a sharp snag. It would also keep his body too rigid to follow the bend for nine seconds, and the proof would credit none of that rigidity to his molt anatomy.

Jiang left it inactive.

Selective Dive Circulation appeared beneath it.

[SELECTIVE DIVE CIRCULATION I AVAILABLE]

[Valid targets:paired flippers | paired feet]

[Wake-keel tissue target invalid]

[Mechanical contact reduction0]

[Pain masking0]

The new skill had survived its first honest chance to disappoint him.

"Useful elsewhere," Jiang said. "Not useful here."

Aylin stood behind the observer line with her hands empty. "The wound remains one point zero centimeters, dry, and closed. I can stop the current from this plate. I cannot lower the seal while you are inside."

Jiang touched the feather-use acceptance with his beak.

[FEATHERS6 ASSIGNED TO PROOF4]

[Ownership transfer0]

[Consumption projected0 if undamaged]

The mesh lifted each feather by its shaft and aligned the barbs in the same direction as Jiang’s flank. They formed a narrow pad above the wound path. Nothing stitched them into him or replaced the four feathers already lost.

The Adverse Witness moved beside the old-body record.

Its material pressed against a perfect feather diagram from the seventy-three-percent restoration copy.

The proposed route widened to forty-one centimeters if Jiang accepted the recorded oilcoat geometry. His current wound vanished from the diagram because that body had never acquired it.

Jiang compared the two paths.

"It fits by removing the part that hurts."

"And the part that learned," Aylin said.

She marked the current-body seal without touching his choice.

Jiang lowered himself at the entrance. His beak passed first, then his head and shoulders. He tucked both flippers against his sides and let the oilcoat slide beneath the upper copper rim.

The dry floor ended beneath his breast. Water supported part of his weight while emperor feet remained on two rough pads behind him. He pushed with both feet and advanced eleven centimeters.

The first abort bar crossed the ceiling above his beak. He could strike it upward without turning.

Jiang passed beneath it.

The low mesh approached his right rear flank. He rotated two degrees left, presenting the oilcoat beside the wound before the open line itself reached the feathers.

The first loose feather bent with his body. The second overlapped it. Their barbs spread pressure across a wider strip instead of letting the mesh press one point against the wound.

Jiang advanced another body quarter.

The ceiling descended to thirty centimeters. His chest fit, but the wake keel rose behind it where the wound crossed the lowest line. Holding his breath made the body more rigid and lifted the rear edge.

He released the breath slowly.

The breast settled into water. His feet came forward beneath the tail, reducing the push from behind. Jiang used one short left-flipper stroke to move without driving the keel upward.

The system awarded nothing for nearing the limit.

Water began moving through the deeper seal at point three meters per second. It pressed Jiang toward the forty-five-degree bend while his body remained partly beneath the low mesh.

The natural response was to open both flippers and force the turn.

That would lift the wake keel into the ceiling.

Jiang kept the right flipper tucked. He opened the left just enough to brake that side, turned his beak toward the bend, and swept his feet through the water instead of bracing against the structure.

His body rotated around the compressed rear flank.

The third loose feather shifted across the mesh.

Wound contact rose to point thirty-eight newtons.

Aylin’s hand moved over the observer stop. "Two hundredths below the limit. Your nearest abort is behind your head."

Jiang stopped every deliberate movement.

The current continued pressing, but his oilcoat settled beneath the overlapping feathers. Contact fell from point thirty-eight to point thirty-four without his body advancing.

The witness projected a completed passage through the recorded body. Its perfect oilcoat had no wound reading to exceed.

Jiang waited until the current line steadied.

Then he used one right-foot sweep and a short left stroke. His hips cleared the lowest ceiling. The wake keel entered the deeper water without touching copper.

The second abort bar waited inside the deep seal. Jiang surfaced beneath it and touched the handle with his beak.

The proof required withdrawal, not merely arrival.

[SUBJECT WITHDRAWAL PHASE]

[Current reverses in00:10]

[Return through low seal required]

[Observer stop available1]

Jiang took one breath and turned before the current reversed. He could activate Feather Mail now, but its nine-second turning lock would overlap the current change and make any correction impossible.

He kept his feathers flexible.

The reversed current carried him toward the bend. Jiang entered at less than half his outbound speed. His tail set the first angle. One right-flipper brake completed it, and both feet remained free in the water.

The low mesh met the unwounded side first.

Jiang rolled two degrees right only after his chest passed beneath the ceiling. The six loose feathers received the wake-keel line in the same overlap as before.

He exhaled, let the water support his breast, and used alternating foot sweeps until his beak reached the dry entrance.

Both emperor feet found the outer pads. Jiang pushed backward and withdrew without a chain, hand, moving floor, or observer stop.

The six feathers released from the mesh into Jiang’s dry inventory tray. They remained loose molt material, not restored plumage.

Aylin asked before crossing the medical line. Jiang accepted a wound and oilcoat check.

The proof had not injured him. It had disturbed six percent of the oilcoat around the compressed line, a real consequence that required ordinary preening and twelve dry minutes.

Anatomy proofs stood3/4.

The final anatomy chamber had no low ceiling.

It had a rotating floor, three false footholds, and a turn too tight for human hips.
