Chapter 313: Recovery Was Not the Same as Rescue

  • Next Chapter

The observer gate closed between Jiang and Aylin.

Copper bars crossed the dry passage beside the final lane. Aylin could still see him through them, read every plate, and pull the emergency drain. She could not enter the subject shore until the attempt ended.

Jiang still had an exit.

The lane formed a long oval around an island of rough stone. Two sloped shores rose from the water, one before the dive marker and one after it. Either could end the attempt under Jiang’s own power.

The Adverse Witness moved beside Protocol A.

Its shortcut had changed again. The unmonitored descent now ended on a heated plate with no recovery clock. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ

The witness pressed its fourth conclusion against the plate.

Jiang looked at the heated square, then at the ordinary stone shore in his lane.

"Survival is the beginning of that measurement," he said. "Not the result."

Aylin checked the bars with one hand and left them closed. "Your shore is point eight meters long. No heating, no moving surface, and no observer chain. The emergency drain still works."

She named what remained available instead of making isolation sound noble.

Jiang entered from the first slope.

The lane water reached his breast, then lifted his feet from the stone. He glided around the island without stroking until his beak passed the first abort marker.

The dive began beneath a horizontal copper arch.

Jiang emptied part of his lungs and angled down. His oilcoat stayed tight against the feather line. The water cooled his flippers first, then worked along the outer skin of his feet.

He did not have Selective Dive Circulation yet. The proof demanded the recovery that would justify granting it. His emperor body supplied only the adaptations it already possessed.

At the bottom, he touched the first plate with the outside of his right flipper.

The route curved beneath the island. Jiang let the current carry his breast past the stone while his feet and tail controlled the angle. One left stroke kept the wake keel from rising into the island’s underside.

The second plate waited beyond the midpoint.

His right flipper reached it at fifty-eight seconds.

An ascent arrow appeared above the plate. The system offered no reward for staying longer.

Jiang angled his body upward.

The Adverse Witness struck its divider twice. Protocol A projected another twenty-two seconds of safe depth and labeled them available proof.

[CARRIER FRAME REMINDER]

[Unused tolerated duration00:22]

[Additional completion value projected1]

[Recovery evidence projected0]

Jiang left the projection behind.

He surfaced at one minute and thirteen seconds, seven seconds inside the bound. The second stone shore lay half a body length away. Both flippers felt heavy enough to tempt a full simultaneous stroke.

He used the right once, waited for its return, then used the left.

His beak touched stone.

Jiang planted both feet on the submerged slope. His first push moved his breast onto the stone, but the wet oilcoat slipped backward two centimeters.

Aylin’s hand closed around the emergency drain chain.

She did not pull.

"Your right return is eighty-nine," she said. "You have the near shore behind you and the drain on my side."

Jiang spread his toes wider and tried again. Emperor feet held the rough surface. His tail pressed against water without touching the lane wall, and his second push carried the wake keel clear of the edge.

The stone contained no blanket, heat pipe, food, or recovery potion. Jiang settled on his breast with both flippers exposed to the air. His oilcoat retained the water trapped nearest the skin, while the outer layer drained through the feather tips.

He did not flap warmth into the muscles. That would spend function before the system measured its return. He tucked the right flipper against his body for ten breaths, opened it, then changed sides.

The movement used the same emperor anatomy that had protected his center during the dive. Warm blood returned to one cooled limb while the other stayed sheltered against his flank.

The numbers were rising, but the target remained unmet.

Protocol A opened the heated plate across the divider. A narrow copper bridge could connect it to Jiang’s shore if Aylin touched the observer approval.

[EXTERIOR HEAT OFFER]

[Projected target time00:31]

[Proof3 invalidated1]

[Physical recovery benefit real]

Aylin read the offer without pretending the warmth was evil. "It would restore function faster. It would end this proof."

"Keep the drain," Jiang said. "Leave the bridge."

She kept one hand near the emergency chain and the other away from approval.

At ninety seconds, Jiang rose onto his feet. The right flipper made one slow backward sweep, returned, and tucked. The left repeated it. He walked four short steps across the island, turned through his natural emperor pivot, and came back without entering the water.

The right side remained one point below target.

Jiang tucked it again.

No speech could warm the flipper. No refusal could change the blood moving through it. He waited through twelve more breaths, opened the limb, and struck the resistance tab hanging above the stone.

The tab moved through its full required angle and returned to center.

[Independent recovery accepted1]

The gate between Jiang and Aylin unlocked because the proof had ended, not because independence required keeping it closed afterward.

Aylin entered the dry passage and stopped outside the subject shore. "Do you want me to check the wound?"

"After the system finishes counting."

She waited outside his reach.

Jiang read the ability twice.

It did not promise a deeper dive for free. It gave him a bounded way to use the circulation his body had demonstrated, then required him to return function afterward.

He accepted the wound check.

Aylin crossed the final distance only after his answer. She lifted the feather edges beside the wake keel without pressing the opened line.

The system opened the first anatomy seal.

It was lined with Jiang’s own loose molt feathers and narrowed directly over the one-centimeter wound.
