Transformed into a Penguin: My Evolution Penguin System
Chapter 312: The Shortcut Could Not Make the Turn
The foot rails withdrew into the floor.
Two narrow seams remained where Jiang had braced during proof one. Water filled them until the lane bottom became a smooth copper curve with nothing for his emperor feet to catch.
The next gate opened sideways.
Beyond it, the lane ran three body lengths forward, bent around a black post, and returned beside itself. The two arms were separated by a wall lower than Jiang’s back. He could see the return ledge from the start, but reaching it required a turn too tight for a straight rush.

Aylin read the lane measurements from her observer plate.
"Narrowest turn is point six four meters. Current runs outward at point seven meters per second and returns at point four. The center wall may not support your weight."
Jiang looked from his chest to the turn post. His body was longer than the open center of the bend.
"That is not a turn," he said. "That is an argument with my spine."
The observer plate translated his answer accurately this time. It did not improve the lane.
Protocol A brightened behind the Adverse Witness.
[ALTERNATE COMPLETION PATH]
[Direct speed threshold1.6m/s]
[Projected completion00:18]
[Turn measurement waived]
[Functional return inferred from arrival]
[Observer record not required]
The witness pressed its material against the recommendation. A pale line appeared down the outbound arm, crossed the turn as if the black post did not occupy space, and ended at the return ledge.
Jiang studied the line without entering.
"It measured the destination," he said. "It did not measure the body between here and there."
[ADVERSE WITNESS CONCLUSION4]
[High speed establishes return function]

[Activation authority0]
The exterior archive copy answered on Hessa’s side of the zone. Aylin could not edit that copy from the observer position, and Jiang could not reach it from the subject lane. Hessa laid a marked copper strip over the route drawing and sent the measurement through the read-only plate.
[EXTERIOR MEASUREMENT RECEIVED]
[Measured shortcut line3.7m]
[Minimum emperor turn diameter under1.6m/s:1.18m]
[Available turn diameter0.64m]
[Wall contact projected1]
[Return function unproven]
The pale shortcut line remained visible. The exterior measurement did not erase a conclusion merely because it was wrong. It placed the missing body beside it.
Aylin lifted her hand from the plate. "Protocol A counts arrival without recording whether your right flipper still completes a return stroke."
"Then it is measuring luggage."
Jiang selected the rail-free lane.
[PROOF2 ATTEMPT1]
[Abort gates2 | observer drain1]
[Maximum wall contact force0]
[Lasting damage0 | transferred cost0]
[Speed cap set by subject1.0m/s]
He chose one meter per second because the turn mattered more than the straight. The system accepted the cap without calling slower movement an advantage.
Jiang lowered himself until water supported his breast. The wound along his wake keel remained above the copper lip. He flexed both flippers once, checked that neither return lagged, and pushed away with his feet.
The outward current caught his oilcoat.
Instead of adding a full stroke, Jiang tucked both flippers and let the water carry him. His feet trailed behind the tail. The current supplied distance, not control, and he refused to confuse the two.
[OUTBOUND CHECK1]
[Current-carried distance0.82m]
[Subject propulsion0.21m]
[Right motor response94%]
[Left motor response95%]
[Wall contact0]
The first abort handle hung above the lane wall. Jiang passed under it with enough room to raise his beak and pull. He kept moving.
At the second marker, the outward current began pressing his chest toward the black turn post. A fast swimmer would arrive with the body straight, the tail trailing, and nowhere to put the length.
Jiang rolled eight degrees left before the bend.
His right flipper opened wide and stopped the water on that side. His left remained tucked. The uneven drag turned his beak toward the inner wall while his tail swept outward. He had used the same broad flippers for speed across open water. Here, one became a brake.

The current tried to straighten him.
Jiang bent at the hips as far as his penguin body allowed and drew both feet forward beneath his belly. They touched no rail. He spread the toes into the moving water, using their broad surface as two small rudders while the tail continued its sweep.
The turn post passed beside his left shoulder.
His wake keel cleared it by less than three centimeters.
[MID-TURN CHECK]
[Emperor feet water steering1]
[Structure support0]
[Minimum clearance2.8cm]
[Wound contact0 | bleeding0]
[Turn angle103deg]
The return current met him from the opposite direction before he had finished rotating. It struck the right side of his beak and tried to pin his tail against the center wall.
Jiang closed the right flipper. He opened the left, not for a stroke, but to catch enough water to stop the tail’s sideways travel. The movement cost forward speed. That was the point.
He nearly stopped beside the post.
[TURN EXIT]
[Forward speed0.19m/s]
[Total turn angle176deg]
[Tail-wall clearance4.1cm]
[Body contact0]
[Functional turn accepted1]
The return arm faced him. The ledge waited three body lengths away while the weaker current pressed against his breast.
Jiang took one controlled stroke with the right flipper. It swept backward through the full measured angle, then returned against his side without tremor.
[RETURN CHECK1]
[Right sweep94% | return94%]

He glided until speed fell below point three. Then the left flipper repeated the motion.

[Cold6/47]
[Pressure Heart60%]
The Adverse Witness touched its shortcut again.
The pale line moved from the empty outbound arm onto Jiang’s return path. A new comparison projected that two simultaneous strokes would cut four seconds from the proof.
[CARRIER FRAME REMINDER]
[Projected completion with full propulsion00:27]
[Current subject projection00:31]
[Difference00:04]
[Evidence for safer return0]
Jiang did not dismiss the panel. He left it visible while he alternated strokes.
Right, glide, left, glide.
Each flipper proved propulsion and return separately. His feet and tail corrected the small drift between strokes. No part of the lane moved him toward the exit except the water he displaced and the opposing current he worked through.
The four-second offer expired before he reached the second abort handle.
[ALTERNATE PATH EXPIRED]
[Behavior payment0]
[Proof loss0]
[Witness conclusion retained]
Jiang surfaced beneath the handle. He took one breath and touched the red bar with his beak. The proof allowed the breath because it measured circulation during work and function after restriction, not one-breath endurance.
Aylin read both flipper responses. "Right ninety-three. Left ninety-four. No wound contact. You still have the drain and this abort."
She gave him the exits before the remaining distance.
Jiang submerged and faced the final meter. The return current strengthened near the ledge, where water spilled back into the outbound arm. His first right stroke moved him twenty-six centimeters. The left moved twenty-eight.
He could have struck with both.
Instead, he tucked the left, finished the right return, and then changed sides. His beak crossed the ledge line. Both feet found the shallow floor, and his tail cleared the wall without help.
Jiang climbed out facing the lane he had crossed.

The witness kept what it had said. Everyone else kept the measurement that disproved it.
Seven minutes had passed since the rails withdrew.
Food stood2:12. Fuel remained0. Residents remained133. Catch6 stayed complete with all six roles ended. Camp Site1 remained ownerless and empty, and both exterior exits remained open.
Jiang remained Pressure60%, mobility10%, wound1.0cm, bleeding0, feather loss4, water deficit0.11L, molt65%, EP0, and native hands0. Physical lane exposure raised Cold4->7/47 after exit. Tissue damage0, transferred cost0, Weather Wake0/residue0, and Huddle0.
Selective Dive Circulation stood at proofs2/3.
The final proof lane contained no return wall.
It contained a shore, a recovery clock, and an observer gate that locked after Jiang entered.
