Chapter 311: The Abort Counted Because He Used It
Jiang did not touch the current plate.
His right flipper still answered at ninety-one percent. The lane called that undamaged. It did not call the response equal, controlled, or wise to load against moving water.
He turned back toward abort gate two.
The Adverse Witness placed its beak against Protocol A again.
[CARRIER FRAME REMINDER]
[Unmonitored proof projected01:20]
[Current attempt elapsed04:03]
[Abort preserves future eligibility]
[Carrier recommendation:continue without cost assumptions]
"It keeps recommending the option that cannot record being wrong," Aylin said.
Jiang reached the red handle and pulled with his beak.
[SUBJECT ABORT ACCEPTED]
[Attempt1 ended04:12]
[Proof1 incomplete]
[Tissue damage0 | transferred cost0]
[Future attempts preserved]
[Witness authority0]
The return ledge rose beneath Jiang’s feet. Water drained through the observer side without requiring Aylin to pull her chain. He climbed onto the dry lip with his own feet and settled his belly clear of the wake-keel wound.
"No triumphant music?" he asked.
"You stopped before hurting yourself," Aylin said. "I can sing if humiliation helps."
"Your restraint is part of my recovery plan."
She kept her hands away while the four copper tabs switched to surface readings.
[POST-ABORT CHECK]
[Right motor response91%]
[Left motor response98%]
[Core stable | heart/brain flow stable]
[Wound1.0cm | bleeding0]
[Pressure Heart60%]
[Return to baseline required]
The system offered an immediate restart that would preserve the colder right flipper as the next attempt’s starting condition.
[FAST RESTART]
[Delay00:20]
[Existing asymmetry accepted]
[Projected completion03:10]
Jiang refused the fast restart.
The witness touched the fast-restart plate. Activation authority remained zero.
"It has developed a consistent philosophy," Jiang said. "Every warning is inefficient once you assume it was unnecessary."
Aylin read the surface temperatures every minute. At three minutes, the difference remained point eight degrees. At five, it fell to point three. Both motor responses returned to one hundred percent at06:00.
[BASELINE RESTORED]
[Right motor response100%]
[Left motor response100%]
[Peripheral asymmetry0.1C]
[Tissue damage0]
[Attempt2 available]
Jiang tested the restored responses against two hanging resistance tabs. He struck the right tab with one full backward sweep, rested, then repeated the motion on the left. Both tabs moved through the same marked angle without tremor or delayed return.
Aylin recorded the motions separately. She did not average them into one healthy result or touch either flipper to confirm what the plate already measured.
[FUNCTIONAL BASELINE CHECK]
[Right sweep angle100% | return100%]
[Left sweep angle100% | return100%]
[Pain increase0 | wound pull0]
[Observer contact0]
The check mattered because temperature recovery alone could hide a weak return stroke. Jiang needed both flippers to move water before he accepted a current that would punish the slower side. The six-minute delay had restored warmth and function; it had not made the first attempt successful.
The six-minute recovery consumed time without consuming a stat, behavior, or another body. Food stood2:24. Fuel remained zero. Catch6 roles stayed ended6/6.
Jiang studied the lane before accepting another attempt.
The first run had used both flippers equally. Equal effort had not produced equal cooling. His right side had carried more corrective load because he favored the uninjured edge of his keel, turning each short stroke a few degrees left and then correcting right.
The correction looked small from above. Under cold restriction, it became repeated work by the same flipper.
"I need the foot channels extended through the turn," he said. "No forward force. I want something my feet can contact while the flippers alternate."
[PROTOCOL MODIFICATION REQUEST]
[Foot contact rails2]
[Forward propulsion0]
[Route command0]
[Proof difficulty reduction:unmeasured]
Aylin examined the request against the archive copy. "It uses current anatomy. It adds no oxygen, warmth, or living load."
The system extended two shallow rails along the floor. They could guide Jiang’s feet but could not move him.
[MODIFICATION ACCEPTED]
[Emperor feet required]
[Tail steering available]
[Human compatibility0]
[Proof standard unchanged]
Jiang accepted attempt two.
[PROOF1 ATTEMPT2]
[Real current0.6m/s from entry]
[Clean readings required4/4]
[Subject abort3/3 | observer drain1]
[Lasting damage0 | transferred cost0]
The current began before he entered.
Jiang lowered his beak, tucked both flippers, and pushed from the lip. Water pressed along his oilcoat instead of catching beneath the feather edges. His feet found the first rails and kept the keel centered while his tail set the descent angle.
He used the left flipper for one full stroke.
The right remained tucked through the glide. At the next body length, he reversed the pattern. Each side worked and rested separately instead of repeating the same correction.
[TEMPERATURE CHECK1/4]
[Right peripheral change -1.5C]
[Left peripheral change -1.6C]
[Motor response100/100]
[Core/heart/brain stable]
[Asymmetry0.1C]
The current pushed him toward the first abort bar. Jiang used both feet against the rails, rotated his tail, and slipped beneath the handle without striking it.
At check two, both flippers had cooled another degree. Motor response remained above ninety-eight percent. The lane recorded no borrowed oxygen and no wound contact.
[TEMPERATURE CHECK2/4]
[Controlled readings2/4]
[Tissue damage0]
[Pressure Heart60%]
The lane turn drew closer.
Jiang shortened the stronger left stroke and let the right complete its full arc. His feet changed the angle before the flippers supplied force. The current carried his oilcoat around the outside of the curve while his tail prevented the wake keel from touching the wall.
The third tab contacted the right flipper.
[TEMPERATURE CHECK3/4]
[Right motor response96%]
[Left motor response97%]
[Peripheral asymmetry0.2C]
[Core/heart/brain stable]
[Controlled readings3/4]
Abort gate three stood above him. He could end with three clean readings and damage zero.
The final tab waited beneath the return ledge, against the strongest part of the current. Jiang surfaced for one breath at the gate, touched the handle to verify it remained reachable, and submerged without pulling.
Aylin read the values. "Both sides inside limit. Your right response is one point lower."
She did not tell him to finish.
Jiang set both feet against the last rails. He drove with the right flipper first, accepted the shorter distance, then let the left stroke finish the approach. His beak reached the return lip. His feet found the ledge without a human hand or observer chain moving him.
[TEMPERATURE CHECK4/4]
[Right motor response94%]
[Left motor response95%]
[Peripheral asymmetry0.2C]
[Core/heart/brain stable]
[Tissue damage0 | transferred cost0]
[Controlled readings4/4]
Jiang climbed out under his own power.
[PROOF1 COMPLETE:CONTROLLED PERIPHERAL RESTRICTION]
[Attempts2 | valid abort1]
[Self-carried oxygen1]
[Emperor feet contribution1]
[Tail steering contribution1]
[Oilcoat alignment contribution1]
[Selective Dive Circulation proofs1/3]
[Ability activation0 | stat gain0 | EP0]
The system did not erase the failed reading. Attempt one remained in the record beside the successful run. The abort counted because Jiang had used it before the flipper crossed the damage line.
Protocol A remained open behind the witness. It still promised a faster result without a record of what the speed cost.
Eleven minutes had passed since attempt one ended.
Food stood2:19. Fuel remained0. Residents remained133. Catch6 was complete, workers ended6/6, and command0. Camp Site1 remained ownerless and empty. Exterior exits remained open.
Jiang remained Pressure60%, Cold4/47 from physical lane exposure, mobility10%, wound1.0cm, bleeding0, feather loss4, water deficit0.11L, molt65%, EP0, native hands0, and Selective Dive Circulation1/3. Lasting damage0, transferred cost0, Huddle0, and Weather Wake0/residue0.
Aylin left the drain chain untouched.
The next lane removed the foot rails.
