Transformed into a Penguin: My Evolution Penguin System
Chapter 308: The System Charged Nothing and Rest Still Cost Them
Jiang’s first recovery test failed because three people asked him questions.
Nera wanted to know whether the open windbreak should face east. Olan asked which slate carried the start time. Hessa asked whether he accepted her as the measurement reader.
Pressure Heart remained sixty-four percent.
"I have discovered a flaw in group medicine," Jiang said. "The patient is still invited to meetings."
Aylin took the slate from Olan and placed it face down.
"Build the windbreak with its opening toward every exit," she said. "Hessa can offer the reading role after nobody needs him to design the place where he is supposed to stop working."
The space outside Camp Site1 had no roof and no fixed wall. Nera and Olan set one furnace cloth across two ownerless basket poles, leaving both ends open. The cloth rose sixty-two centimeters, enough to break the wind across Jiang’s resting height without enclosing a person.

Nera ended the setup role. Olan returned both poles to the ended catch inventory and retained no guard duty.
Hessa waited until they stepped away.
"I offer one measurement role," she said. "I read Pressure Heart every four minutes. You can end the test at any time. I gain no treatment authority and cannot order you to remain still."
"Accepted for readings only," Jiang said.

[End on either answer]
Jiang lowered his belly onto a folded section of dry catch mat. His feet settled beneath him. He let both flippers rest against his sides instead of bracing for the next latch, grate, or argument.
The position made his one-centimeter wake-keel wound pull less. It did not close it.

The system opened a substitution offer beside the baseline.

[Ordinary recovery remains available]
Jiang turned his beak away from it.
"Payment declined. Leave the ordinary clock visible."
[PAYMENT0 | SUBSTITUTION0]
The first four minutes passed with no change.
At minute eight, Pressure Heart fell from sixty-four to sixty-three.

The notice refused to call the cloth, stillness, distance from decisions, or Aylin’s presence the cause. All four had changed together.
Hessa read the values and asked, "Continue?"
"Continue the test," Jiang answered.
She marked one answer and resumed the clock.
Aylin stayed beyond the mat. After another minute, she asked, "Do you want me here while you rest? Presence only."
The question landed differently without a road, treatment, or kiss behind it.
"Yes," Jiang said. "Sit where I can see your boots. I am not agreeing to be tucked in."
"I had no cloth large enough for your dignity."
She sat on the ground outside the windbreak, close enough for conversation and too far for accidental touch. Current touch consent remained zero.
At minute twelve, a catch divider snapped near the edible basket.
The sound pulled Jiang’s feet under him before his chest left the mat. A section of thawed fish pressed against the damaged slat. If it spilled onto the grit, the remaining food clock would lose more than time.
Nera reached the basket first. Miri braced the lower corner while Olan replaced the slat with the unused third pole. None looked toward Jiang for an answer.

Jiang remained half-raised.
Pressure Heart returned to sixty-four.

"That is insulting," Jiang said.
"You prepared to move," Hessa replied. "The measure includes your body, not only the work you completed."
Nera ended the basket repair after one minute and forty-six seconds. The food stayed clean. All three repair roles ended. Jiang had contributed nothing except losing four minutes of recovery.
He settled onto the mat again.
"Restart the ordinary clock," he said.
Hessa did not touch the slate. "New measurement role. Same boundaries. Do you accept?"
"I accept readings only. Again."

The second test felt less like rest because Jiang now knew the cost of almost standing.
At four minutes, nothing changed. At eight, Pressure fell to sixty-three again. Nera completed a second food count without requesting his attention. Black-Crown and Split-Beak received the same count through separate callers, and neither caller created a route duty for him.
At minute twelve, Pressure reached sixty-two.

Food had fallen to1:01.
The ordinary clock had consumed twenty-three minutes since the first baseline, including the failed interval and basket repair. The Adverse Witness had already reached the Emperor Molt Zone.

Jiang read the arrival line without rising.
"It gets to tell the next room that prices are fake while I practice lying down."
"Then arrive with better evidence and a lower number," Aylin said.
At minute sixteen, Pressure remained sixty-two. The wind shifted through the open end of the cloth, but Cold stayed zero. The mat kept Jiang’s wound off the grit. Neither condition counted as healing.
Hessa asked the continuation question.
"I will continue," he said.
At minute twenty, Pressure fell to sixty-one.
The system offered no encouragement. It displayed the food clock beside the heart load.
[Pressure61%]
[Food0:53]
[Emperor Molt entry locked]
Jiang stared at the paired values. One more point could take four minutes or forty. The current reserve might feed 133 residents for fifty-three more minutes. Resting longer did not catch fish or find fuel.
Miri approached the open end and stopped outside the measurement line.
"Catch6 has six voluntary workers available," she said. "Two north, two south, and two human. No protagonist role requested. Projected return twenty-two minutes."
The proposal did not require Jiang’s answer. It required separate rookery and human answers already recorded at the catch board.
[SEASONAL PASSAGE CATCH6]
[Workers available6]
[Protagonist roles0]

[Launch answers pending3]
Jiang kept his beak on the mat.
"Do not wait for me."
Miri nodded once and left the line. Black-Crown, Split-Beak, and the two human workers supplied their own launch answers. Catch6 became active without assigning Jiang a duty.
At minute twenty-four, Pressure Heart fell to sixty.

Jiang remained on the mat for another ten seconds because qualification was not an order to stand.
Then he pushed upright on his own feet.
Thirty-five minutes had passed since the first baseline. Food stood0:49. Fuel remained0. Residents remained133. Catch6 was active with workers6/protagonist roles0/projected return00:18. Camp Site1 remained ownerless, awake-entry only, occupants0, and deeper entry0. All exterior exits remained open.
Jiang’s Pressure Heart was60%, Cold0/47, mobility10%, wound1.0cm, feather loss4, water deficit0.11L, molt65%, EP0, Weather Wake0/residue0, native hands0, and Selective Dive Circulation0/3. Huddle use0, behavioral payment0, and stat gain0.
Aylin stood without offering a hand.
The living door opened at penguin height.
Behind it, the witness had already written the welcome.
