Chapter 300: The Body Made From Four Refusals

The glass did not close after the rescue comparison.

Deep-Current Emperor remained behind it with a projected return forty-nine seconds better than the one Jiang had achieved. Polar Warden stood beside that outline. Aylin’s Crown Physician and White Road Sovereign waited on the opposite wall.

Four useful bodies had been refused for four different reasons.

The floor placed their records around a fifth empty position.

The empty position was not shaped for a penguin or a human. It was a narrow rail ending at the sealed tray where the seven-percent witness had been returned.

Jiang read the claim twice.

The ledger did not say the refused bodies had been wrong choices. It did not say they were Jiang, Aylin, or possible futures stolen from either of them. It claimed only that useful outcomes had been left unchosen.

That much was true.

Nera’s wrapped hand made the proof difficult to romanticize. Deep-Current would have reached her sooner. The rescue record had measured it.

Aylin stepped beside the southern route mark without crossing it.

"What does release permit?" she asked.

The ledger replaced its final line.

The system had learned to state the trap without dressing it as a gift.

If they released the witness, it could return only when both answered again unless it developed a choice of its own. No soul or identity was promised. The rail offered no time limit.

Jiang looked toward Aylin.

"Separate answers and separate limits," he said.

"I was going to insist," Aylin replied.

She asked Hessa Korr to record her words. Jiang asked Miri Kest to record his. Neither selected the rescued people as payers, proof objects, or permanent keepers.

Jiang gave the first answer.

"I release the seven-percent witness from my route seal into the visible comparison rail. I do not grant my name, soul, memories, family promises, relationships, body rights, system access, authority, debts, or current choices. This answer ends at that rail."

Aylin waited until Hessa repeated the answer and Miri confirmed that the tray had not moved.

Then she gave her own.

"I release the seven-percent witness from my route seal into the same visible rail. I grant no crown, succession, physician standing, road authority, subject relation, memory, body right, debt, relationship, or claim to my executed record. This answer grants no destination beyond the rail."

The sealed tray opened inward.

Seven percent of the destroyed old body did not rise as flesh. It emerged as clear physical-essence plates joined around five remembered points: breast angle, left foot, right foot, beak line, and the old force path through the keel.

Those were the five geometries the copied body had repeated before Jiang defeated it.

It had no eyes.

Its beak carried no mouth opening. Both flippers ended in blunt clear edges. The empty spaces between plates showed the comparison rail through its chest.

It moved because the old geometry included movement. That was reproduction, not a new decision.

None of them became solid.

The witness took one copied step along the rail. Its emperor feet landed on the road line. Its clear shoulders passed through the Polar Warden reach marks. A treatment circle followed without selecting a patient.

Nera held up her bandaged hand.

"Can it say the swimmer would have been faster?" she asked.

No answer came from the closed beak.

The system placed two rescue paths beneath the clear feet. One ended at first contact00:32 and required four current answers to open the grate. The other ended at00:18 and showed one Deep-Current body completing the release.

The witness stepped onto the faster path.

It did not look at Jiang. It had no eyes with which to accuse him and no intent the ledger could read. The copied step followed the better measured outcome.

Miri folded her wet sleeve above the elbow.

"That is evidence," she said. "It is not regret."

The path under the witness confirmed only one of those statements.

Crown Physician opened twelve empty patient marks.

Nera stood within range. The witness raised one blunt flipper toward her cut, but no field activated and no subject relation formed. Ordinary linen remained the only treatment on her hand.

White Road Sovereign placed the sealed western route under Aylin.

The witness moved toward the road and stopped where the rail ended. Aylin’s succession remained0. The system had granted the construct a comparison, not a kingdom.

Four records produced three selections and one rejection. They still produced no person.

Miri studied the construct that had selected the body which could have reached her sooner.

"Unchosen Witness names what it has," she said. "It witnessed the outcomes we did not choose. It does not name whose life it owns."

Nera gave a separate answer from beside her.

"Use that label only. Give it no keeper."

Neither woman had route authority over the system. Their words did not complete the classification, but they made the intended boundary public.

Jiang and Aylin answered from their separate marks.
