Chapter 301: The Regret Did Not Change His Answer

  • Next Chapter

The Unchosen Witness kept its beak against the metal cradle.

Four refused outcomes remained beneath its clear feet. Only one had measured two living people waiting underwater.

Jiang stood outside the comparison rail.

He did not need a system to tell him which outline the witness had selected.

[VOICE INTERVAL REQUEST]

[Issuer:Physical Essence Labyrinth, Zone Two]

[Speaker:Unchosen Witness]

[Maximum duration00:90 | uses1]

[Permitted sources:offer records4 | measured outcome sets1 | disclosed answers during interval]

[Intent reading0 | memory reading0 | identity claim0]

[Unsupported claim closes interval]

[Activation payment0 | offer activation0]

Hessa placed an ordinary sand timer beside the rail. Its full fall lasted ninety seconds. The system could count its own interval, but the people outside would keep a separate measure.

Aylin read the permitted sources.

"State the source before every conclusion," she said. "If the source cannot carry the words, stop speaking."

[INTERVAL CONDITION ACCEPTED]

[Source citation required1]

The cradle tightened around the clear beak.

No borrowed human voice came through it. The rail struck three different metal notes and shaped them into words by spacing the impacts. Every sentence sounded assembled because it was.

"Source: exterior rescue outcome. Deep-Current Emperor is the refused body with the largest measured living delay."

The first grains fell.

"Current body contact: thirty-two seconds. Deep-Current projected contact: eighteen seconds. Difference: fourteen seconds."

The witness lifted one emperor foot.

"Current body cooperative return: two living. Deep-Current projected solo return: forty-nine seconds earlier."

Nera kept her wrapped hand against her coat. Miri stood beside her in a dry borrowed sleeve.

Neither woman asked Jiang to defend himself.

The witness continued its comparison.

"Source: offer record one and rescue outcome. Jiang Wei refused the body before the route failed. The offered tariff remained available during the failure. Activation remained zero."

Jiang watched the timer.

"Those facts do not prove regret," he said.

The rail answered with two short strikes.

"Correct. Intent claim is unavailable."

The clear head turned toward him through copied geometry.

"Disclosed question: Do you regret refusing Deep-Current Emperor before that rescue?"

It had not read the answer.

It had built the only question its evidence could support.

Jiang looked at Nera first, then Miri. He did not ask either of them to make the answer easier.

"I regret that my refusal left both of you underwater longer," he said. "I regret every second between the faster return and the one I could give you."

The witness placed its lifted foot on the Deep-Current path.

[DISCLOSED REGRET1]

[Object:living delay after Deep-Current refusal]

[Intent inferred0 | answer provided1]

The rail had identified the refusal correctly. It had not known why Jiang carried it until he said so.

Its next words came after another source strike.

"Source: disclosed regret and offer record one. Reverse refusal?"

Miri looked at Jiang then.

That was the part a cleaner story would have hidden. Regret should have produced a lesson, and the lesson should have changed the answer. Otherwise the pain looked wasted.

Jiang had no cleaner answer.

"No," he said. "Offer the same body at the same price, and I refuse it again."

[REPEAT ANSWER:REFUSE]

[Offer terms unchanged | payment terms3 | activation0]

The witness did not accuse him of lying. It had no authority to do that.

"Source: disclosed answers. Regret1. Reversal0."

The metal cadence paused for four grains.

"Contradiction classification is requested."

"Not a contradiction," Aylin said. "Ask him what he chose between."

The witness cited her answer before using it.

"Source: Aylin disclosed instruction. What costs were compared?"

Jiang indicated the three payment lines still displayed behind Deep-Current Emperor.

"Fourteen seconds against my burden refusal. Forty-nine seconds against my emergency consent boundary. One body doing the work against my habit of waiting for separately led groups."

He touched none of the lines.

"The delay was real. So were the parts of me the body wanted removed. I chose a rescue that took longer because Miri could stop it, Olan and Anik could answer separately, and no one had to become my assigned burden. I hate that the choice cost time. I still choose it."

Nera shifted her wrapped hand.

"My hand was why Miri stopped the first pull," she said. "Would the faster body have stopped?"

The witness used offer record one.

"Emergency consent boundary removed permanently. Predicted solo release does not include trapped-person stop authority. Injury change cannot be measured from available outcome."

It did not claim Deep-Current would have crushed her hand. The record could not prove that.

It also did not claim Jiang’s slower choice had protected her. The actual rescue had stopped. The alternate had never happened.

Both uncertainties remained visible.

[ALTERNATE INJURY CLAIM:UNAVAILABLE]

[Actual stop honored1 | additional injury0]

The sand had fallen past halfway.

The witness changed the comparison.

"Source: offer record one and disclosed answer. If three behavioral payments were removed, physical costs remain: surface mobility6, turn radius2.4m, appetite+52%, route incompatibility, wound retained. Accept body for exterior rescue?"

Jiang examined the terms rather than the outline.

"For that flooded route, yes," he said. "I would accept those physical costs for a bounded rescue interval. I would not accept them as a permanent body without a measured return route."

[DISCLOSED UTILITY ANSWER]

[Deep-Current rescue utility accepted under changed terms1]

[Permanent current offer accepted0]

[Changed terms available0]

The system offered no kinder version.

The witness had enough evidence to separate the body from its tariff.

"Source: offer record one and disclosed answers. Refused object: current permanent package. Desired object: bounded aquatic utility without behavioral deletion. Objects are not equivalent."

Jiang gave no answer.

That conclusion was accurate. It also gave him nothing for free.

The body he wanted had not been offered. The body that had been offered would still cost the three behaviors that made the actual rescue stoppable and shared.

Hessa called twenty seconds remaining.

The witness moved one blunt flipper toward Polar Warden’s reach marks.

"Source: offer record two. Bounded body interval exists. Recurring tariff remains one permanent task-relevant constraint per activation."

It placed the flipper against the clear outline of a hand it did not possess.

"Source: disclosed utility answer. Bounded duration does not remove behavioral price."

Jiang understood the correction.

He had asked for a bounded rescue form. Polar Warden proved that time limits could exist, but it also proved the labyrinth could charge permanent behavior for temporary strength.

The problem was not duration alone.

"I heard you," Jiang said. "Temporary power can still make permanent damage."

The witness cited him.

"Source: Jiang disclosed statement. Confirmed by offer record two."

Hessa called five seconds.

The clear beak struck the cradle once.

"Source: disclosed regret. Refusal remains active. Regret remains active. Neither cancels the other."

The cradle opened at seventy-four seconds.

[VOICE INTERVAL CLOSED00:74/00:90]

[Unsupported claims0 | identity claims0 | intent claims0]

[Disclosed regret1 | repeat refusal1 | changed-term utility answer1]

[Voice uses1/1 | remaining0]

The Unchosen Witness could no longer shape words. Memory remained0; the exterior records held what had been said. Source-citation behavior remained1 because the interval had paid no strength tariff.

Zone Two moved a bar across the deeper end of the comparison rail.

It weighed forty-two kilograms.

The witness tested it with copied old-body force and moved it less than one centimeter. Jiang’s current body could not reach the bar without entering Zone Two again, and his safe breast force remained below the required hold.

[DEEPER RAIL LOAD]

[Bar42kg | required lift38kg for00:12]

[Unchosen Witness current safe lift11kg]

[Jiang current safe lift below requirement]

[Polar Warden measured lift42kg]

The Polar Warden record opened beside the silent witness.

This time the temporary body was not offered to Jiang.

[REVERSIBLE STRENGTH INTERVAL AVAILABLE]

[Candidate:Unchosen Witness]

[Duration02:00 | strength source:Polar Warden load geometry]

[Payment:one demonstrated behavioral constraint]

[Available demonstrated constraint:source citation requirement]

Nine minutes had passed.

Food stood0:16. Fuel remained0. Residents remained133. Holders remained4 with western vacancy1 and Huddle consent0. Camp occupants and entrants remained0. Seasonal Passage remained complete through cycle4.

Jiang’s body state did not change. EP0, Pressure64%, Cold0/47, mobility10%, wound1.0cm, feather loss4, water deficit0.11L, Weather Wake0/residue0, and molt65% remained fixed.

Unchosen Witness remained material7/geometry5/5/alternatives4/outcomes1 with soul, identity, memory, intent, current choice, relationships, authority, debts, and original claim0. Voice uses reached1/1. Offer activations and payments remained0.

The silent body had proved Jiang could regret a refusal and make it again.

Now it had been offered enough strength to lift the next door, at the price of the rule that had kept every word honest.
