Transformed into a Penguin: My Evolution Penguin System

Chapter 299: The Better Swimmer Would Have Reached Them First

  • Next Chapter

The body Jiang refused became useful before its outline cooled behind glass.

The unmeasured Deep-Current exit vented beneath the exterior work ring.

Stone lifted under Nera Holt and Miri Kest. Both dropped through a split0.54 meters wide before Olan Sorn could reach them. Meltwater followed through the opening and carried them beneath a horizontal grate.

Anik pulled Olan away from the collapsing edge. Hessa counted two fallen, two voices, and one air pocket answer from below.

[EXTERIOR ROUTE FAILURE]

[Source:unmeasured Deep-Current exit pressure]

[Living fallen2 | visible returns0/2]

[Water route length6.8m | minimum width0.46m]

[Air pocket0.19m | grate load39kg]

The opening was wide enough for Jiang’s current body and the refused Deep-Current body. It was too narrow for Polar Warden’s upright shoulders.

Deep-Current Emperor would have entered with effective submerged heart46, aquatic acceleration+72%, and sustained output+49%. Its wider breast still fitted0.46 meters by four centimeters.

Jiang stood at Pressure Heart64 with deliberate cardiac use prohibited. His wound remained1.0cm. He could swim without activating the heart, but the grate load exceeded the force he could safely hold while submerged.

The comparison did not wait until after the rescue.

[CURRENT BODY projected first contact00:31]

[DEEP-CURRENT projected first contact00:18]

[CURRENT BODY solo grate release:unsafe]

[DEEP-CURRENT solo grate release:available]

Thirteen seconds and one additional rescuer were not abstract disadvantages while two people were underwater.

Jiang did not activate the refused form. Its three permanent payments had not changed because the emergency became real.

He accepted one current-body line carry with Olan holding the exterior end, Anik controlling edge load, Hessa calling visible times, and Aylin receiving any injured person after return. No one assigned Jiang the grate.

[RESCUE ROLES]

[Jiang:line delivery and interior count]

[Olan:exterior pull | Anik:edge control | Hessa:time | Aylin:receiving care]

[Unified command0 | body activation0]

Jiang entered the water headfirst.

The first meter dropped beneath the broken stone. He folded both flippers, let his oilcoat carry the scrape, and kept the wake-keel wound away from the right wall. The route widened after2.1 meters.

It was not open-water swimming. His feet struck the floor whenever he tried a full kick, while the ceiling forced his neck forward and spoiled the clean line of his breast. Each flipper stroke had to begin against his sides, sweep no farther than the stone allowed, then finish before the next narrowing caught the leading edge.

The emperor body still gave him advantages a human rescuer would not have carried into that channel. His oilcoat shed the first cold shock. His flattened feet found purchase where boots would have slipped, and the pressure change along his beak marked the grate before he could see it. None of those advantages made the route generous. They only made it possible.

At five meters, Nera struck the grate twice. The second impact was weaker. Jiang answered against the floor with two claw taps, received two hurried taps from Miri, and kept swimming instead of spending breath on a call the water would distort.

He reached the grate in thirty-two seconds.

Nera and Miri had found the nineteen-centimeter air pocket on the far side. Nera’s left hand bled from a stone cut. Miri held her collar above water and kept both mouths beneath the highest part of the roof.

[FIRST CONTACT00:32]

[Living located2/2 | conscious2 | missing0]

[Nera hand cut0.7cm | Miri injury0]

Jiang pushed the line through one grate square.

Miri caught it. She looped it around the grate’s center bar rather than either body. Nera confirmed the loop with her uninjured hand.

Jiang tested the grate from below.

Thirty-nine kilograms did not mean a single lift. Water pressed through the opening, and the bent lower hinge converted every push into a sideways twist. Jiang could start movement with both feet against stone. Holding it required breast force through the same region his heart and wound limited.

He pushed once without deliberate cardiac use.

[Grate movement2.8cm]

[Current body sustainable hold:0.9s]

[Required clear opening19cm]

The grate fell back when he stopped.

Current penguin anatomy had reached the trapped people, carried the line, and mapped the hinge. It could not finish the rescue alone.

Jiang called three short pulls through the line. Olan answered from outside. Anik moved the edge brace away from the failing stone. Hessa repeated that both trapped people remained conscious.

They changed the pull angle.

Olan and Anik took exterior force. Jiang placed both feet against the lower hinge and used emperor claws to prevent the bar from twisting. Miri pulled the interior loop toward the air pocket while Nera stayed clear.

[COOPERATIVE GRATE RELEASE]

[Exterior pull2 | interior guide1 | trapped-side pull1]

[Living burden assignment0 | current answers4]

The first pull opened eleven centimeters and stopped.

Miri ended her pull when the loop crossed Nera’s injured hand. Jiang transmitted stop through the line. Olan and Anik returned the load to zero instead of treating the lost opening as a reason to continue.

They moved the loop one square right.

The second pull opened twenty-one centimeters.

Nera crossed first because one hand was injured. Jiang guided her shoulder below the bent hinge and let Olan’s line carry her toward the exterior opening. Miri followed after Nera reached the upper stone ledge.

[VISIBLE RETURNS2/2]

[Missing0 | additional injuries0]

Jiang returned last under his own swim.

Aylin accepted Nera’s request for hand treatment after exterior count. She cleaned the0.7cm cut and closed it with ordinary linen. Treatment field0, subject classification0, Crown Physician activation0.

Miri required warmth and no treatment. Olan ended the rescue line role after recovering all6.8 meters. Anik’s edge role and Hessa’s time role ended after the broken opening was marked and no living body remained below.

[RESCUE COMPLETE]

[Living2/2 | treatment ordinary1 | subjects0]

[Roles ended5 | route ownernone]

The system compared outcomes because Zone Two had preserved the refused offer.

[CURRENT BODY outcome]

[First contact00:32 | solo completion0 | cooperative completion2/2]

[DEEP-CURRENT projected outcome]

[First contact00:18 | solo completion available | projected return00:49 earlier]

[Body payment still required3 | projection does not authorize activation]

The refused body would have reached them fourteen seconds earlier and projected both visible returns forty-nine seconds earlier. It would not have needed Olan, Anik, or Miri to move the grate.

That was a real advantage.

It also would have removed Jiang’s burden refusal, emergency consent boundary, and habit of waiting for separately led groups. The rescue had used all three behaviors: no one assigned him the grate, Miri’s stop ended the first pull, and four current answers replaced one stronger body.

The slower rescue did not prove the current body better.

It proved what the refused body’s efficiency would have made unnecessary.

Cala Venn’s compact answer reached zero during Nera’s treatment.

[CALA COMPACT INTERVAL ENDED]

[Automatic renewal0 | holders5->4 | western vacancy1]

Cala did not renew inside the emergency. She ended her holder role, confirmed Huddle consent remained0, and retained the right to answer again later.

Fifteen minutes had passed.

Food stood0:37. Fuel remained0. Residents remained133. Compact holders stood4 with vacancy1. Seasonal Passage remained complete through cycle4. Jiang’s labyrinth entries/returns remained13/13; Aylin4/4; Zone3/3.

Deep-Current activation0/payments0. Rescue missing0/injuries1 treated ordinarily/subjects0. Jiang’s EP0, Pressure64%, Cold0/47, mobility10%, wound1.0cm, feather loss4, water deficit0.11L, Weather Wake0/residue0, and molt65% remained unchanged.

Behind glass, the better swimmer had an outcome now.

It had also learned exactly which living delays Jiang had chosen to keep.
