Chapter 271: The Red Lantern Offered Maelin’s Hall a New Heart
Before Maelin’s road finished dying, the Armada lantern opened.
Its red shutters peeled back around a wet black center. Something beat inside the light, slow and heavy enough for the sound to cross open dark.
Maelin’s guildhall answered.
Living wings missed one stroke. Every black rib in the lower bay drew inward, then opened toward the lantern as if the wounded hall had smelled a road home.
Kessa still faced the place where Maelin had disappeared.
On Kessa’s shoulder, the stormmew bit through the collar of her coat.
Pain turned her in time to see the launch.
A red heart crossed the guild roads on a white chain.
It was smaller than Maelin had been and larger than Jiang. Stolen mothglass plated its sides in overlapping scales. Between those scales, pale roots tightened and released around a hollow filled with red water.
Guild roads reacted around its flight.
The nearest carried stone towers on the back of a long-winged beast. It folded every bridge against its sides and banked away. An inverted forest drew silver roots out of the chain’s path. Farther off, a keep suspended between four burning sails extinguished the sail nearest the lantern.
Warriors stood along all three moving edges.
Nobody placed a body between the Armada and its target.
No face formed in it.
No dead voice called Kessa by name.
Maelin was unnecessary to the heartseed. It needed the wound she had left.
"Close the founder rib!" Kessa shouted.
Three hunters reached the black wall and shoved against it. Still, the hall opened. Clear roots slid from the empty joining scar and spread like fingers toward the incoming heart.
Kessa struck them with Maelin’s severance blade.
Her first cut landed flat.
Maelin’s blade turned in Kessa’s hand because she was watching another piece of clear root fall from its edge. Maelin’s root. Maelin’s last cut.
A reaching strand split under the second strike.
"Strike it again," Sivra said.
Kessa looked at her.
"You can hate me after," Sivra said. "Cut now."
Kessa cut through the next strand.
Her shoulder bird tore loose another piece of collar. Kessa wanted to turn, catch it, and hear Maelin complain about teeth in the bay. The wish lasted long enough to hurt.
She left the stormmew where it had chosen to stand.
Both hands closed around the blade. Grief could ride her shoulder with the bird, but it would not hold the weapon.
Myrn lowered her sound wing into road-dark outside the wounded bay. With no road mark to guide her, the mount used the pressure of the approaching chain against her clear vanes. She leaned away from it.
Her pressure shifted the guildhall just far enough to change the strike.
Its course missed the center of Maelin’s scar.
The heartseed struck below the scar.
Red water burst across the lower bay.
Impact threw Kessa into the wall and sent Jiang sliding from between Aylin’s knees. His bad shoulder hit first. He rolled onto the failed wing, opened his beak around a cry, and tasted blood before he stopped beside the flooded founder rib.
Aylin reached for him.
Black floor moved under her hand.
Clear roots had folded around the heartseed’s lower half. They were not attacking it. They were pulling it inside.
"The hall wants the anchor," Kessa said.
Her voice carried disbelief, then anger at herself for expecting a wounded body to understand betrayal.
Hest jammed the bent red yoke between two closing ribs. Valea drove both wrapped barbs through empty scale holes, crossed their handles, and forced the wound to stay wide enough for Kessa’s blade.
"It wants not to fall," Aylin said. "That is all the seed needs."
Another heartbeat struck the bay.
Jiang felt it through his breast.
One pressure came from the living floor beneath him. It trembled with the guildhall’s wing strokes, pain changing each pulse. The other entered through the red water coating his feathers and repeated without responding to anything the hall did.
The second pressure was imposed.
Splitflow gave Jiang that single difference.
It did not show the chain outside, the lantern beyond it, or the barb entering the founder wound under his belly. It offered no way to save the hall.
A pale barb moved against his keel.
Four pale prongs unfolded from the heartseed. One entered a clear root Kessa had failed to cut. Another scraped toward the rooted black stain remaining in Jiang’s coat.
Jiang’s stolen call drove the seed’s beat.
His lungs recognized the fixed rhythm and tightened around it.
Jiang dragged himself backward.
High-root followed from the coat loop to Aylin’s hands. She took up only the slack.
"Do you want out?" she asked.
Jiang looked from her to the pale prong.
He wanted out badly enough to tremble.
Air still scraped into his chest instead of filling it. His beak tasted of old blood and new. Every shift of the floor pressed the failed wing against bone that had already done enough for one lifetime.
Aylin would pull if he asked. She would not call leaving cowardice or staying noble.
That mercy made the choice belong entirely to him.
Around the seed, the founder wound continued closing. If Aylin pulled now, he could leave before the lower ribs sealed.
Leaving meant the heartseed would remain.
Jiang pushed himself onto his sound foot.
His straight leg shook beneath him. The useless wing dragged flat over the floor. He stepped over high-root and entered the wound.
Aylin did not improve his answer into courage.
She fed the line after him.
Inside the lower rib, red water reached Jiang’s belly. The passage narrowed around his shoulders and opened beneath the heartseed, where no human arm could turn a blade.
No mothglass protected the seed’s underside.
White root surrounded a soft red sac that compressed against Jiang’s back each time the hall tried to draw it deeper. The first anchor barb had already entered a clear channel ahead.
Jiang pressed his split beak to it.
He could bite through the soft place.
The red sac pulsed against his tongue in the same call Breathwood had fixed inside him. Biting would burst it over his face and drive that rhythm into every open wound.
Jiang closed his beak without cutting.
He lowered his breast beneath the barb.
Emperor weight worked differently from a blade. His keel spread the contact across the prong while both webbed feet found the slick wall behind him.
A wingbeat ran through the guildhall.
Living pressure changed beneath Jiang.
Nothing changed in the imposed beat.
He waited through one painful draw, then kicked when the hall opened for its next wing stroke.
Clear tissue released part of the barb.
White fibers stretched between it and the hall. Jiang gained the height of one feather before his unstable leg folded and the prong drove him back into red water.
Outside, Hest’s yoke bent.
"The rib is closing," he said.
Valea shifted one wrapped barb to a new scale hole. "Then stop describing it and become heavier."
Hest put his shoulder against the yoke.
Kessa knelt at the wound with Maelin’s blade ready, but the heartseed filled her view. She could cut the hall or the red armor. Jiang remained hidden beneath both.
"Where is he?" she asked.
Aylin watched high-root.
The line rested over the wound’s lower edge. It moved with the hall, then stopped while everything around it shifted.
"He is under the barb."
"You cannot know that."
"I know where the line refuses to go."
Aylin pulled until high-root became firm, not tight.
Inside, the line lifted Jiang’s coat away from the closing lower rib.
It did not lift his body.
He still had both feet.
Jiang planted them again. His sound web covered the prong. The unstable foot pressed beside it, late and crooked but present.
Another wing stroke opened the living channel.
Jiang kicked with both damaged legs.
His keel drove up. The barb came free far enough for red water to rush beneath it.
Kessa saw the pale tip.
She brought Maelin’s blade down.
Mothglass cut the white fibers joining barb to hall.
Jiang rolled aside before the severed prong fell. Its point tore his coat wrap instead of his breast and buried itself in the wall behind him.
Red heartseed convulsed around its chain.
All four prongs closed at once. Clear roots released its plated sides.
Wounded living ribs tried to pull it back.
Myrn threw one sound-wing stroke into road-dark.
Sivra had no rein. She put both hands against Myrn’s shell shoulder and shoved when the mount shoved.
Their force turned the hall across the heartseed’s chain.
Hest’s yoke slipped. Valea caught one end with a wrapped barb while Kessa drove her blade beneath a red scale. Together they levered the seed toward the wound’s open edge.
Aylin hauled high-root.
High-root pulled Jiang first.
He slid backward through the lower rib with red water under his belly. His split beak struck one black edge. Aylin released enough pull to spare his neck, then drew again when his feet cleared.
Jiang came out beside Hest’s boot.
Red heartseed followed him out.
Kessa tore Maelin’s blade free. Myrn’s next wing stroke rolled the guildhall away, and the red heart passed through the founder wound without entering it.
For one breath, the hall flew on its own.
Only then did the System return.
[HOSTILE ANCHOR REJECTED]
[EVOLUTION POINTS: 0 -> 1]
[NEW ENVIRONMENTAL BRANCH: STAR-ROAD]
Those words vanished before Jiang found enough breath to hate their timing.
No point came from Maelin’s death. No line named the founder or the preserved masters. The System had waited until Jiang put his own body beneath a new threat and forced one hostile anchor back out.
That distinction mattered to Jiang.
It did not make one point feel generous.
Outside, the heartseed opened again.
Its prongs caught the guildhall’s outer ribs.
White chain split around both living wings, crossed beneath the lower bay, and pulled tight.
Every unfamiliar guild light moved aside.
Far ahead, the Armada lantern began to reel them in.
