Transformed into a Penguin: My Evolution Penguin System
Chapter 272: The Heartseed Beat in Jiang’s Stolen Voice
The white chain took the guildhall’s next wing stroke away.
Living glass opened against the pull, stopped halfway, and bent toward the Armada lantern. Every stall gate in the lower bay rang. Released stormmews dropped from the upper ribs before catching themselves in the red-lit air.
Outside, the confluence moved around the captured hall.
A tower-bearing road-beast climbed over the chain rather than touch it. Silver bridges retracted into a sailing forest. A formation of armored riders broke apart and rejoined after the guildhall passed between them. Their faces remained turned toward Maelin’s open wound.
None of those faces stayed alongside them.
The red lantern owned the direction now.
Jiang remained on his belly beside Hest’s boot.
He had one Evolution Point and no breath to spend admiring it.
The founder wall struck his stolen call.
One hard beat entered through the floor. A pause followed in exactly the wrong place, then a second beat repeated the note Breathwood had fixed inside Jiang’s coat.
Kessa turned toward the sound.
The pale barb she had cut from the heartseed remained buried in the lower rib. Red moisture gathered around it despite the water Valea had swept away. With every beat, the barb sank farther into clear living tissue.
"I cut that free," Kessa said.
"You cut it from the heart," Aylin answered. "Not from the hall."
Kessa crossed the bay with Maelin’s blade.
Jiang tried to rise before she reached the barb. He planted the sound foot, but the unstable leg folded under his belly. Hest caught the coat behind his shoulders without lifting the failed wing.
"I need him over there," Kessa said.
"He needs his leg," Hest replied.
"Both can be true."
Jiang pulled free of Hest’s hand and limped toward the founder wall.
Kessa’s blade point marked a dark curve around the embedded barb. The cut would remove the prong, its surrounding root, and a broad section of black rib already clouded red.
Aylin stepped into her path.
"Move before the cut widens," Kessa said.
"That rib opens the wounded wing."
"That rib is drinking Armada blood."
"Parts of it are fighting."
Kessa’s grip tightened until the green veins in Maelin’s blade vanished under her knuckles.
"Maelin would know where to cut."
"Maelin waited until the last living body crossed," Aylin said. "Do not use her death to make haste sound like her."
The words landed cruelly because they were true.
Kessa lifted the blade away from Aylin’s chest. She did not apologize, and Aylin did not ask her to. Both women looked at the red cloud instead.
Kessa looked at the red cloud. "Show me."
Aylin had no road-name left to wake the glass. Natural Essence could enter living tissue through her hand, but the heartseed had buried itself beside the hall’s own clear roots. Sending cold through both would prove only that both could freeze.
She looked down at Jiang.
He disliked being the answer in an argument conducted over his head.
Jiang settled his keel along the black rib.
Living pressure reached him first. It shivered whenever the bent wing tried to open, weakened when the chain pulled, and surged when small flight-beasts landed along the upper wall.
The buried barb ignored all of it.
Its rhythm arrived fixed and complete through Jiang’s keel.
He stepped sideways on the unstable leg.
The imposed beat weakened when his breast left the barb’s nearest scale. Living shivers continued beneath him, changing with the hall.
Jiang pecked the floor beside Kessa’s cut line.
The single knock entered living glass.
Then he moved his beak inside the curve and pecked again.
Outside the curve, the rib changed.
Inside, the barb repeated him.
Kessa watched the distinction without pretending the two pecks explained everything. She placed the flat of Maelin’s blade against the outer point.
"Does this part still live?"
Jiang answered with one careful strike.
She moved the blade closer to the red cloud.
"Does this part carry the lie?" 𝘧𝓇ℯℴ𝓂
Jiang hit the floor hard enough to jar his beak.
"That was not one of my choices."
"It may mean you asked the wrong question," Aylin said.
Another chain pull cut across them.
Kessa nearly fell against the blade. Aylin caught her sound elbow while Jiang slid beneath both women and struck the founder rib with his shoulder.
Across the bay, the injured flight wall folded inward.
Myrn entered beneath it.
Her sound wing rose under the descending glass. The wall outweighed her, but she changed where its burden landed. Sivra drove her shortened name shard into a hinge while two hunters pulled a stormmew cage out of the closing seam.
The stormmews did not wait for permission. They climbed over Sivra’s back and flew toward the higher wing.
"Hest, bring the yoke!" Kessa called.
He carried the bent red yoke to Myrn’s side and wedged its crosspiece under the wall. Valea wrapped one exposed barb before using it as a second brace. Neither tool stopped the chain. Together they kept the flight wall from crushing Myrn while she shifted the smaller beasts clear.
Jiang returned his breast to the founder rib.
The hall’s living pressure had changed. Its wounded wing now pushed against Myrn, Hest, the yoke, Valea’s barb, and every claw scrambling upward.
The buried fragment still beat alone.
Jiang followed that beat along the floor.
It traveled from the pale prong into a thin red strand beneath the black rib. He could detect the strand only while his body touched each section. When he lifted his breast to move, the path vanished.
Each return to the floor sent the fixed call through his lungs.
Jiang learned the strand by pain rather than sight. Near the barb, pressure crowded the stolen note against his breastbone. Farther away, the hall’s own shiver returned around it. At every pause he had to choose whether the next contact would clarify the route or only let the heartseed strike him again.
One Evolution Point waited uselessly inside him.
No adaptation belonged to it yet. Even if one had, spending before he understood the wound would have been another way to let the System choose the question.
No line appeared before his eyes.
No friendly System prompt mapped the danger for the point it had just awarded.
Jiang crawled by repeated contact, one ugly body-length at a time.
The red strand passed beneath Kessa’s intended cut, then divided near the lower flight joint. One branch entered living tissue and pulsed against the hall. The other continued toward the open road-dark, carrying a harsher pull from the outer chain.
Three pressures met under Jiang.
The hall changed with pain.
The inner barb repeated the stolen call.
The outer chain dragged both.
Jiang stopped at the fork.
Kessa crouched beside him. "Which one do I cut?"
He put his beak over the inner branch, then scraped the point toward the outer.
"You want the chain first," Aylin said.
Jiang struck the outer branch.
Kessa followed it with her blade tip until black wall rose between them and the open flight edge.
"There is no joint here."
Valea looked over from Myrn’s brace. "The outside scale covers it."
"Can you open that scale?"
"From this side? I can open the hall with it."
The red lantern had grown larger through the flight wall.
Its shutters surrounded a mouth of black water. More white chains moved inside, each attached to a dim red shape that had not yet opened.
Kessa saw them and set Maelin’s blade against the inner fragment.
"If I take the whole joint, we lose one wing," she said. "If I leave it, that lantern takes the hall."
"Those are not the only bodies in the choice," Sivra said.
Myrn shoved the flight wall higher. The motion tore the split in her injured wing. Blood ran through the clear vane and fell into open dark.
Sivra put one hand against the wound without seizing a rein or shoulder tack that no longer existed.
"You are done," she told Myrn.
Myrn ducked her armored head and kept lifting.
"That was not a command," Sivra said.
Myrn struck the wall with her jaw.
"Fine. It was an excellent suggestion."
The last trapped glasskite cleared the hinge.
Myrn let the wall settle onto Hest’s yoke and staggered back. Her dark eye found Jiang across the bay.
The heartseed beat through him again.
Jiang’s own fixed call came out of the founder rib, crossed his breast, and entered Myrn’s wounded wing through the floor. The stolen rhythm tried to make one road out of both injuries.
Jiang left the fork.
He crawled to Myrn and placed his sound foot beside, not on, the edge of her blood.
Contact with the floor kept the distinction intact. Myrn’s pressure changed when she breathed. The heartseed’s did not.
Jiang turned toward Kessa and scraped his beak from Myrn’s foot to the open wall.
Kessa understood the route and hated it.
"No human footing past the hinge," she said.
"Then do not send a human," Sivra replied.
Aylin still held high-root. "He cannot fly."
Myrn folded her sound side toward the floor.
The old saddle braces had been cut away. No bit, rein, or command tack remained. Her shell shoulder offered only a shallow curve between the sound wing and the hard ridge of her neck.
Sivra kept both hands away from it.
Jiang faced the open road-dark.
The chain pulled the hall another length toward the lantern. Guild towers passed above them, their windows shut. An immense road-beast rolled away beneath, carrying bells along its belly and a village between its dorsal spines.
Wind crossed Jiang’s damaged coat.
The Wake Scar admitted all of it.
Aylin drew high-root through her hands and checked the outer loop without tightening it. The cord could bring Jiang back from a reachable edge. It could not keep him on a flying body or tell her when Myrn chose to turn.
"No knot around her," Sivra said.
"Agreed. The support stays separate."
"No line through her wing."
"I know how to ask without building a bridle."
Aylin laid the broad support on the floor between Jiang and Myrn. Neither end touched the mount.
Myrn lowered herself farther until the uninjured side reached the floor in front of him.
She waited for the penguin to answer.
