Transformed into a Penguin: My Evolution Penguin System
Chapter 270: The Founder Stayed When the Guildhall Flew
The anchor kept falling.
Maelin caught it with the ribs inside her body.
Her feet left the bay floor. Clear roots stretched from her open side to the oldest black wall, holding her between the broken anchor and the guildhall it was dragging down.
Kessa reached for her.
"Open the flight walls," Maelin said.
"You are coming with us."
"Then open them somewhere I can land."
Kessa’s hand remained out for one furious breath. Another drop threw a row of molt cages against their stops, and living wings beat inside the dark.
She turned away from Maelin.
"Both flight walls!" Kessa shouted. "Break the lower stalls. Nothing stays tethered."
Hunters moved at last.
Blades entered hinges rather than throats. Black-glass stall fronts opened one after another. Small stormmews scrambled over boots, biting any hand that offered to carry them. A clear-backed kite slipped through Kessa’s arms before she could decide whether it needed help.
Maelin heard the bite and laughed once.
The sound broke when the anchor pulled again.
Aylin had both hands on high-root. Frost covered the palm that no Mothglass road knew now, but the cord remained ordinary beneath it: wet, snagged, and attached to Jiang somewhere below.
It shifted against her fingers.
"He’s moving," Hest said.
"The hall is moving. He may only be losing the floor."
Hest took the line behind her without adding a pull. Valea removed the wrapped barb from the seam before the next drop could turn it into a blade across the cord.
"Give him room until the direction changes," Aylin said.
Below them, Jiang slid past the preserved dead.
The oath chamber had become a steep black throat. Released water ran toward Oren’s open lever, carrying pieces of white bark and stolen glass through the gap. Ilyra’s hair streamed after it, but her body stayed in the wall with her unfinished mark.
Jiang planted his sound foot beside her ribs.
High-root drifted behind him. Its lower loop remained caught around the glass spur in the flooded channel, and the falling hall pulled the cord sideways rather than toward Aylin.
The severed root fled beneath Oren’s lever.
Beyond it waited a second grate grown from overlapping wing bones. Water escaped between the narrow bars. The white branch had entered through a central slit and now wound around something heavy enough to bend the whole chamber.
The final anchor sluice.
An adult hunter could not pass Oren’s preserved arm. Jiang could, if he flattened the failed wing and accepted what the rib would do to his shoulder.
He pushed his breast through the ribs.
The first rib scraped his Wake Scar. Cold water followed the bare channel to his belly. Jiang turned his head so the split beak missed the lowest bar and dragged his unstable leg after him.
Behind the grate, the root had wrapped a black release tongue.
Its stolen mothglass had no edge left. It used thickness instead, swelling between the tongue and its housing so neither water nor hall movement could open it.
Jiang bit the pale growth.
His jaw answered with a bolt of pain.
The root compressed under his beak, then expanded as soon as he released. Biting harder would spend his mouth before it changed the latch.
Jiang backed his breast against the grate and searched with one foot.
Three forward toes reached the release tongue. His small rear claw found the gap behind it, a part of emperor anatomy useful mainly for not sliding off ice and offending anyone who thought penguins had elegant feet.
Jiang hooked the claw.
The guildhall dropped again.
His full weight came onto one toe. The release tongue moved, stopped against the swollen root, and drove the claw into its base.
Jiang kicked with the other foot.
Webbing spread across the white growth. Instead of cutting it, he pressed the branch flat against the housing while his rear claw pulled the tongue the opposite way.
The sluice opened one finger’s width.
Water screamed through the gap.
In the bay, the sound came from inside Maelin’s chest.
She folded around the anchor, arms locked through a black rib that no longer belonged entirely to the hall. White root showed between her fingers.
Kessa opened the first flight wall.
Living glass unfolded into a dark wing that hid the higher hall. Air tore through the bay, carrying loose feathers, broken straps, and one angry stormmew toward the opening. The bird caught itself with uneven wings and vanished above.
The opposite wall did not move.
White bark had crossed its lower joint.
Sivra reached it first. Her broken name shard opened nothing, so she drove the sharp end into the joint with both hands.
The shard snapped shorter.
Myrn came up behind her.
The mount could not stand cleanly on the injured wing. She put her shell jaw under the locked wall anyway and rose from her sound side. Blood ran from the split in her clear wing as the joint lifted over Sivra’s blade.
"Do not tear it for me," Sivra said.
Myrn answered by shoving harder.
"Fine. Tear it because you hate the wall."
The second flight wall opened.
Smaller beasts rushed toward the new air. Some flew. Others climbed the ribbed slope on hooked feet. The clear-backed kite that had escaped Kessa landed beside a closed molt cage, struck its latch twice, then left when Valea arrived with a barb.
Valea pried the cage open.
Two glasskites spilled out. They followed the first clear body because it occupied the safest moving air, not because any person had claimed them.
Hest braced the lower slope with the bent red yoke. Wounded mounts crossed above his shoulders while he kept the rising edge from closing on their feet.
Aylin remained at the flooded mouth.
High-root changed direction.
The cord pulled down toward Jiang, then slid across the snag. This time the motion came from the undercroft, not the falling hall.
"Now," Aylin said through clenched teeth.
She and Hest drew together.
Below, Jiang’s coat loop tightened.
The pull lifted his breast against the grate and nearly unhooked his rear claw. He slapped his sound foot wider across the white root, using Aylin’s withdrawal as the force his injured body could not produce.
She did not know what he needed.
She only knew the line had stopped dragging him deeper.
The release tongue tore free.
Black water struck Jiang from behind.
The sluice opened under his belly. White root ripped away from the housing and vanished through the falling anchor channel. Jiang lost the grate, his foot, and every useful idea about which way was up.
High-root found the snag.
The cord tightened around the glass spur until one strand began to part. If it broke there, Aylin would pull back an empty end.
Jiang rolled in the current.
His failed wing hit the wall. His sound foot swept past the spur once, then returned. He pressed the web against the trapped loop and shoved it off the glass instead of trying to grasp it.
The line came free.
Aylin’s pull took him through Oren’s open lever.
Jiang struck the oath ledge on his back, rolled across the empty mark, and entered the flooded throat beak-first. His body fit the return current better than it had fit any floor. Belly smooth, feathers laid flat, feet trailing, he let the water make him fast where walking had made him helpless.
The living mouth opened beneath the beast bay.
Jiang came out in a sheet of black water.
Aylin released the hard pull before his coat loop reached the edge. Hest caught Jiang’s breast with both forearms. Valea took the failed-wing side without closing a hand around it.
Jiang coughed water over Hest’s shoulder.
"I also missed you," Hest said.
No one had time to enjoy the reunion.
The opened sluice tore the last support from the infected anchor. Maelin dropped to one knee. White root broke out of the black rib in her arms and entered the clear roots threaded through her side.
Kessa ran back from the flight wall.
"Every bay is open," she said. "Come away."
Behind her, Myrn crossed the rising wing with Sivra walking at her sound shoulder. The last small stormmew clung to Kessa’s back, where it had apparently decided rescue should be punished.
Maelin looked at it.
"That one tries every hand with its beak."
"You can complain about it tomorrow."
"I already have, every day."
Maelin took Kessa’s mothglass blade.
She set its edge against the clear root joining her ribs to the guildhall. Across her body, the infected anchor pulled toward the closing world below.
Kessa covered Maelin’s hand with hers. "No."
"That is a respectable answer."
"Then listen to it."
"I did." Maelin’s face changed. Fear finally showed as plainly on her as it did on the people around her. "Kessa, I do not want to stay."
The admission took the fight from Kessa’s mouth.
Maelin moved their joined hands until the blade rested in the exact white crack above her hip.
"But the root does."
Across the bay, living wings reached their full span.
No beast remained behind the stalls. Myrn had cleared the hinge. Jiang lay between Aylin and Hest, breathing badly but breathing. Valea crossed last with the bent yoke after the final hooked foot left it.
Maelin watched each body leave the old floor.
"Cut the living root," she said.
Kessa’s blade hand would not move.
Maelin drove both their hands down.
Mothglass passed through the clear root.
The guildhall leaped away.
Maelin stayed on the broken anchor.
For one suspended instant, she stood beyond the open flight wall with both arms around the infected rib. Wind pulled her silvered hair away from her face. The small stormmew on Kessa’s back called after her.
White root burst through Maelin’s chest.
Her arms tightened once.
The branch stopped short of the guildhall.
Maelin died holding it.
Kessa made no sound as the distance opened. She kept one hand around the mothglass blade and the other on the stormmew clawed into her shoulder.
The rooted world folded around Maelin’s body.
No light returned from it.
The guildhall’s living wings beat once.
Black roads shattered behind them. Unmoored living glass pitched through open dark with no founder, home anchor, or known destination.
Nothing appeared before Jiang’s eyes.
No reward named Maelin’s death. No guild mark claimed his part in it.
Ahead, unfamiliar lights kindled across the dark.
Some moved in schools. Others carried towers, sails, forests, or the silhouettes of beasts large enough to bear whole keeps. Dozens of guild roads crossed without touching.
Among them, one lantern already burned Armada red.
