Chapter 269: Aylin Gave Up the Road That Still Knew Her

  • Next Chapter

"Daughter of Edric," the gate said again.

A second breath moved through the living gate, drawn from Aylin’s blood.

High-root snapped toward the wall. The loop around her forearm tightened so violently that her sleeve twisted against the reopened wrist.

Hest seized the cord as it whipped past her, stopping the pull before it took Aylin off her feet. Valea hammered a wrapped barb into a floor seam and bent the cord around it, adding friction without trapping Aylin inside the loop.

"Do not cut it," Aylin said.

Kessa had already raised her blade.

"That gate has his return," Aylin told her.

Kessa understood before she trusted. She turned the blade and struck a white root climbing from the gate instead.

Inside the oath chamber, Jiang lost the ledge.

High-root plunged under his sound foot toward the empty mark. Its pull dragged him between Oren’s ribs and rolled him onto his failed wing. Pain opened through his shoulder, hot enough to steal the breath he had guarded from the false rhythm.

Black water rose over his beak.

Jiang clamped down before it entered his mouth. His straight leg kicked once and folded. The current that had led toward the molt throat now circled the shared knot and pressed him deeper beneath the preserved dead.

Above him, Ilyra’s mouth remained open around the root that wore her voice.

No stolen voice addressed Jiang through the branch.

It used Aylin’s name.

Green light ran along the chamber wall. A crown stroke appeared first, then the curve of a river gate Jiang had seen in false roads and palace stone. Blood inside high-root brightened each line as the mark rebuilt itself around the living woman beyond the wall.

At the knot, the empty wing began to close.

Jiang caught Ilyra’s cut sliver between two toes. It shifted, but the royal current held the braid too tightly for the glass to travel farther.

Outside, the gate opened wider.

Black water stood upright inside it. White roots moved through the water without disturbing its surface, gathering around a road that existed only when Aylin’s bleeding hand came near.

No image of Edric waited in the road. That would have been easier to hate.

It remembered the shape his blood had given the world.

A narrow waterwheel turned in the dark. Copper cups traveled around its rim, each worn by years of fingers and flood grit. A torn glove hung from one spoke. Beyond it, an old bridge waited with its royal lamps unlit.

Aylin forgot the next breath.

She had described those cups to a counterfeit road long ago. She had fed it wet lime, seed cake, and the story of a king dropping his food into a gear pit. Every detail had become a weapon in someone else’s hands.

This road had not learned from her story.

Those copper scratches were wrong in ways only use could make right.

Maelin saw Aylin lean toward the gate. Clear roots pulled at the founder’s sides as she stepped between Aylin and the standing water.

"Does it reach your world?" Maelin asked.

"It carried Edric’s blood once."

"Where does it reach now?"

White roots gathered behind the unlit bridge.

"Now it reaches him."

High-root jerked again.

Hest’s boots slid across the flooded floor. Valea’s barb bent in the seam. Aylin turned the loop off her numb fingers and took the strain along her reliable forearm.

Three dull blows came through the cord.

Not a signal. Jiang’s body striking glass.

Aylin felt the difference because his earlier strikes had stopped her pull. These arrived wherever the gate dragged him.

"Let me sever the royal branch," Kessa said.

"You cannot see which branch that is."

"Neither can you from here."

"It said my name."

Kessa’s mouth hardened. "Names lie."

"Blood is less imaginative."

Over their voices, the gate spoke.

"Aylin," the old road called again.

Its old voice did not sound like Edric. It sounded like every stone road that had opened for his riders before Aylin was born.

Around the turning waterwheel, the torn glove passed beneath black water and emerged dry.

Sivra came from Myrn’s side with her broken name shard in one hand. When she held it toward the opening, the glass remained dull.

"It knows her," Sivra said. "The hall does not know me anymore."

There was no envy in the words. That made them crueler.

Aylin looked at the shard. Sivra had cut herself out of every Mothglass road to free Myrn from a command neither of them had chosen. Now the absence followed her even inside the hall where she had learned to ride.

"Can a road forget one name without forgetting the person?" Aylin asked.

Sivra glanced at Myrn.

Myrn remained on one knee, injured wing tucked beneath her. Her dark eye followed Sivra without any mark telling it to.

"The ones worth keeping can," Sivra said.

Another white branch struck the bay.

Kessa met it beside Aylin’s head. Her mothglass edge split the borrowed weapon vein, but the pale core wrapped around the blade and pulled her toward the gate.

Valea left the tether brace long enough to hook Kessa’s belt. Hest held both lines while Sivra cut the root from the other side.

Maelin braced against the oldest wall rib.

Under Maelin’s skin, the crack passed her elbow and reached one shoulder.

"Choose before the gate reaches the anchor," she said.

Aylin freed her bleeding hand from the high-root loop.

Hest took the full pull. His bad hand opened under it, and he caught the cord against his chest rather than lose it.

"I have him," he said.

"You have a line."

"I know the difference."

Aylin crossed to the gate.

Warm black water closed over Aylin’s palm.

Her palm entered no deeper than the reopened abrasion, yet the old road closed around every cut as if greeting a key returned after years away. Light moved beneath her skin. The waterwheel accelerated.

Inside the oath chamber, high-root pulled Jiang against the empty wing.

Its lowest stroke touched the black pattern trapped in his coat.

His stolen call struck Jiang’s lungs.

Jiang struck the floor with his split beak. Pain gave him one breath that belonged to him. He used it to roll onto his breast and push his sound foot back under Ilyra’s sliver.

Ilyra’s glass edge held beneath his foot.

The rest of the knot yielded nothing.

It tightened around his leg while Aylin’s living road fed it from above.

Cool Natural Essence entered the gate through Aylin’s blood.

Frost did not spread across the standing water. It followed the part of the road already touching her, a thin white burn along the name the hall had recognized.

Instead, the gate fought by showing her the bridge.

One bridge lamp came alive.

Beyond it waited the curve of an Eres canal and a palace roof broken along its eastern edge. No father stood there. No promise reached for her. The road offered only a direction that might still lead to the last place Edric had been alive.

Aylin wanted that bridge. She wanted one real road that had known Edric before every enemy learned his voice, and she had crossed worlds for less.

High-root pulled through Hest’s grip. The line cut his coat and struck the gate beside her.

Aylin heard Jiang’s body hit the wall again.

She pressed her palm flat.

"Edric was my father before you learned his blood," she said. "He remains my father when you forget mine."

Natural Essence entered the first stroke.

Cold traveled from the gate into her wrist. Her two numb fingers whitened without feeling it. Pain found the other three and climbed toward her elbow as the road tried to preserve its living key.

A white fracture split the crown stroke.

Darkness swallowed the bridge lamp.

"Daughter of--" the gate tried again.

Aylin drove the cold deeper.

Her name peeled from the standing water in a skin of black frost.

As the waterwheel slowed, one copper cup fell from its rim and vanished before it struck the road. The torn glove remained for another turn, then passed into darkness.

Behind Aylin, Sivra whispered, "Enough."

It was not a command.

Aylin kept her hand in the gate until the road stopped trying to finish the sentence.

Black water collapsed around her wrist.

She staggered backward with frost covering her palm. Hest caught her shoulder without releasing Jiang’s line.

Kessa stared into the blank wall where the gate had been. "What did you lose?"

Aylin flexed her three painful fingers. The other two did not move.

She remembered wet lime under her childhood nails. She remembered seed cake in a gear pit and Edric blaming a baker who had not been near him. She remembered the anger in his copied face, the torn glove, and every unanswered road home.

Every memory remained her own.

Blank glass no longer knew her.

"The way back as his daughter," she said.

Inside the oath chamber, the royal current died.

Water released Jiang so abruptly that his belly struck the floor. High-root went slack beneath his foot. The empty wing lost its upper curve, and white fibers withdrew from the black pattern in his coat.

Ilyra’s sliver moved.

Jiang hooked it harder between his toes and kicked across the knot instead of into it.

Ilyra’s cut followed the unfinished strokes the dead masters had left. It passed behind her ribs, turned along Tamsa’s buried blade, and reached Oren’s fused release without entering any preserved body.

Oren’s dead thumb lifted from the lock.

Under his hand, the old beast-bay lever opened.

Black water tore through the shared knot.

White roots unbraided from names, scars, and bones. Ilyra’s mouth emptied. Tamsa’s wrist settled beside her blade. The growth around Oren’s ribs peeled away while his hand remained on the release he had chosen.

Jiang held his breast to the floor as the undercroft emptied around him.

The severed root did not die. It fled deeper into the hall.

Pale branches plunged through the open lever and vanished into the oldest black rib beneath the hall.

Above him, Maelin screamed with the hall.

Black wall tore away from her joined side. One clear root snapped inside her body, then another. Across the bay, every living wing folded as the entire hall dropped.

Maelin caught the broken anchor against her ribs.

Still, the anchor kept falling.
