Transformed into a Penguin: My Evolution Penguin System
Chapter 268: The Root Wore the Guild’s Dead Faces
At the sound of Sivra’s name, the preserved hand pulled Aylin’s line toward the dead woman’s mouth.
High-root cut across Jiang’s shoulder. He trapped it under his sound foot before the cord could enter the white bark between her lips.
"Lower Myrn’s bridge," the stolen voice asked again.
That sentence carried no threat. It sounded tired, amused, and certain that Sivra would complain while doing it.
Jiang understood why the lie had survived her blade.
Green light spread through the name above the half-preserved face. Letters appeared under the white growth.
The name read Ilyra Marr.
The woman who had shown Myrn how to take her first road still wore a shallow bill scar along her cheek. One front tooth sat crooked behind her parted lips. White root had copied both details badly enough to prove it had studied the body.
Jiang’s anger found an easy target.
A thin branch passed through Ilyra’s mouth before joining the hand around his line. His beak could reach it from the ledge. One hard bite through the jaw would sever both.
He leaned close enough to bite.
Ilyra’s real teeth showed between the white fibers.
Jiang backed away from the offered cut.
The root wanted him to attack where a face made the branch soft. It had arranged the dead as armor and dared anyone living to call the shortest path mercy.
He slid into the water beside Ilyra’s shoulder.
Below the surface, her body continued into the wall. Mothglass covered her ribs in dark overlapping plates. Each plate carried part of an old road stroke, and every white branch passed behind bone before meeting the next.
Two more masters lay along the chamber curve.
Oren Kiv had died with one hand around a beast-bay release. Heat had fused his palm to the lever, but his thumb still pressed away from the lock. The oath mark above him showed a hooked stormmew and a bridge opening toward clear air.
Tamsa Ro had lost two fingers long before the root found her. Mothglass capped the old wounds cleanly. Her remaining hand held a snapped blade through her own shoulder mark, keeping its final stroke from closing.
Their names had not protected them.
Their last choices had survived in the positions of their hands.
White bark covered Oren’s release and Tamsa’s broken blade. It copied their voices through the marks.
"Close the upper wings," Oren said through a throat filled with root.
"Open the hatchling floor," Tamsa said at the same time.
The commands fought each other because the people had died making different choices in different rooms. The root repeated both as if contradiction were only another sound to wear.
Jiang dipped beneath the surface.
His vision shortened to green smears and pale joints. Healthy feathers kept most of the water from his skin, but the Wake Scar took the chamber cold without resistance. His failed wing dragged beside him and threatened every narrow turn.
High-root remained under his foot.
The preserved hand pulled from above. Aylin’s end held from somewhere beyond two bends and a closed throat. Between them, the snag around the glass spur turned the line into a crooked saw.
Jiang followed the white branches with his breast close to the wall.
Contact gave him no names or memories. It gave him changing pressure from old skin, fixed pull from mothglass, and the same imposed draw converging behind all three bodies.
The knot lay beyond their ribs.
Reaching it from the ledge meant passing through Ilyra’s face. Reaching it from below meant fitting between the chamber floor and a row of dead masters the root had armored together.
Jiang pushed his beak into the lower gap.
The cracked tip touched glass first. He angled his head, flattened the useful wing, and swept one foot until his belly entered. A human chest would have stopped against Oren’s ribs.
An emperor penguin could become an accusation with feet.
Jiang wriggled deeper under the dead.
Mothglass scraped his coat. Tamsa’s broken blade rested above his back, close enough to cut if the root moved her hand. He kept his failed wing tight and used the web of his sound foot to steer around bone.
White fibers tightened across the bodies.
Oren’s dead fingers closed on the beast release.
Tamsa’s blade lowered toward Jiang.
He stopped beneath it.
Her wrist shook against the root’s pull. The missing fingers left her grip uneven, and the blade turned on the old cap rather than descending straight.
Tamsa had kept a flaw the root could not correct without becoming her hand.
Jiang pressed his back against the flat of the blade.
Its point shifted away from his wing and entered the white growth beside her shoulder mark. The branch recoiled. Tamsa’s wrist fell still with the blade buried in the cut she had chosen before death.
Jiang moved on beneath her.
Behind Ilyra’s ribs, the shared knot came into view.
White roots braided around stolen names, bridge strokes, and green weapon veins. At its center waited an empty oath mark shaped like an open wing.
No name filled the upper curve.
The lower stroke matched the fixed note Breathwood had taken from Jiang.
He felt the resemblance when water against his breast began to pulse in his own call.
The empty mark answered him.
White fibers lifted from the knot and settled along the black pattern retained in his torn coat. They did not enter his skin. They arranged his copied rhythm around the empty wing and tried to close the missing name with his body.
Jiang kicked backward from the mark.
Oren’s ribs stopped his retreat. The narrow gap that had admitted him now held his shoulders between bone and living glass.
The false call sounded again.
Pressure struck his chest from the outside, perfectly timed to the note he had already lost. His lungs tried to answer a rhythm they had not made.
No System window appeared to explain the theft.
No ability woke to make it fair.
Jiang lowered his keel against the chamber floor and refused to breathe on the root’s beat.
Above him, Ilyra laughed once more.
The sound crossed the guildhall.
In the lower beast bay, Sivra went rigid beside Myrn’s wounded shoulder.
Myrn heard the voice through the black floor. Her shell jaw lifted. The old road scar along her clear wing brightened under dried blood, and her sound wing opened toward a bridge that did not exist.
Sivra reached for the rein she had cut away.
Her hand closed on empty air.
"That is Ilyra," Kessa said.
"That is where Ilyra used to laugh," Sivra answered.
Another root struck beneath the bay. Maelin’s linked ribs bowed with the floor, and a white crack crossed from her elbow into the black wall behind her. She braced both hands against the hall.
"It wants a living answer," Maelin said.
Kessa raised her mothglass blade toward the flooded mouth. "Can her voice open Myrn’s road?"
"Ilyra could ask," Sivra said. "Myrn could refuse."
The copied voice came through the floor again.
"Sivra, lower her bridge."
Myrn tried to rise on the injured wing. Pain folded the clear edge beneath her, and her shell jaw struck the bay floor.
Sivra crouched in front of the mount without touching her reins, throat, or wounded shoulder.
"I heard it too," she said. "I am not answering for you."
Myrn’s dark eye fixed on Sivra.
Myrn lowered the sound wing on her own.
Kessa looked toward Aylin. "Pull him out before the voice learns another road."
Aylin held high-root around her reliable forearm. The line had gone hard across the fold where her wrist abrasion met the cord.
"The return is snagged," she said. "If I haul, the line cuts him before it frees him."
"If you wait, that thing finds the anchor."
"Both dangers are real."
Aylin kept the cord off her numb fingers while feeding one small loop toward the flooded mouth. Nothing moved. Somewhere below, the snag held.
The guildhall lurched beneath them.
High-root burned across Aylin’s wrist.
Fresh blood entered the pale fibers.
She saw the stain and opened her hand, but the cord stayed taut against Jiang’s weight and the preserved hand below.
Maelin turned from the wall. "Keep that blood from the road ribs."
Aylin pulled her sleeve between skin and cord.
The first red thread had already disappeared into the line.
Inside the oath chamber, warmth reached Jiang’s sound foot.
It was too faint to be a message. Blood changed the taste of the water around high-root, then flowed along the cord toward the shared knot.
The empty oath mark brightened.
Jiang drove his keel harder into the floor and searched the braid for the flaw Ilyra had left.
Her mark should have closed from name to wing, then wing to bridge. One stroke ended early beneath her lowest rib. A mothglass sliver remained wedged there, its cut face turned against the root.
Ilyra had broken her own road before the branch finished taking her.
Jiang hooked the sliver with his sound foot.
His web slipped once. On the next sweep, the glass caught between two toes.
He pushed with both feet.
The sliver entered the shared knot.
White fibers recoiled from Ilyra’s name. Her preserved hand loosened around Aylin’s line, but the blood inside the cord had already reached the empty mark.
Green light ran away from Jiang.
It followed high-root through the lower snag, around the closed molt throat, and into the living ribs beneath Aylin’s feet.
A road-gate opened in the bay wall.
No bridge waited beyond it. Only white roots turning in black water.
The living glass spoke with a voice older than the guildhall.
"Aylin," it said. "Daughter of Edric."
