Chapter 224: The Armada Found the Wound Between Worlds

  • Next Chapter

By the third week, Jiang knew the armada anchor was about to pull before shell dust fell.

It had tested both worlds through the days between. Sometimes the black leader tightened long enough to wake him and went slack before Aylin reached the shell horn. Sometimes Red Aeries answered with Hest’s bar and the injured male remained silent until the female called twice.

Jiang fasted through every pull. More old coat came away when he slept. Dark contour feathers opened in uneven fields along his neck, back, shoulders, and flanks, while the skin beneath them consumed the body reserves Aylin could no longer replace with fish.

Each morning she lifted the warming cloth and looked through the remaining seams. Dry fabric tucked beneath Jiang’s belly was still visible from above. Around the Wake Scar, sparse barbs failed to hide pale skin even when he pressed them flat.

No water was needed to prove the coat remained open.

The surviving messenger strand tightened first. Frost brightened where it crossed Cairnspire’s ruined shutter. A breath later, the cracked lowest star gave a low turn beneath the scorched shelf.

Then the family called through pain.

Jiang’s new contour feathers covered most of his back, flanks, and shoulders. They made him black again from a distance. Up close, dry cloth remained visible through seams beneath the belly and around the permanent Wake Scar.

He could not enter water.

The hook pulled anyway, indifferent to proof.

On Red Aeries, white teeth dragged a rounded scar ridge toward the slit. Warm black-gray tissue tore around the embedded hinge. Blood entered the shallow basin in slow dark folds.

Valea cut one scar-grown fiber before it tightened across the injured male’s feet. Hest braced his bowed bar over the wound mouth and pushed Mottle’s loose messenger root behind it.

"Move them from the ridge," he said.

The female emperor had already begun.

She carried the chick between joined feet and drove her shoulder beneath the injured male’s breast. He tried to stand. The opened side wound folded under him, so she moved in short shoves that kept his weight against her flank.

The chick stayed beneath both adults. Its burned beak no longer opened all the way.

Mottle and Ilex cleared the shallow basin together. The smallest juvenile climbed onto the Bellwyrm’s forelimb without permission. The immense animal shook once, failed to dislodge it, and turned its wounded body away from the hook.

Black-green glass repeated Jiang’s family call through the scar.

The chorus leech answered the glass from the basin. Mottle changed her warning twice, forcing the clear animal to turn away from the route the emperor family used. Ilex limped after her and kept one wing under the smallest juvenile whenever the ledge shifted.

No living emperor answered the copy.

At Cairnspire, the false notes arrived smooth while the real male’s breath broke under his mate’s effort.

Aylin held the remaining strand around a shell horn. "They are moving."

"Not clear yet," Jiang said.

Vessa crouched beside the old shutter housing. White frost had split its outer skin and exposed the last hinge inside the dry breath spine. The hinge carried the surviving messenger strand on one side and the armada’s black leader beneath it.

"If I drop this, both lines go," she said.

"What survives when you drop it?" Aylin asked.

Vessa pushed her shell bar into the crack. Water breathed through it.

"A slit through the rubble. Maybe enough for him after the coat seals. Nothing dry. Nothing for the cradle."

The breath spine was Cairnspire’s final air path into the broken star. Once its roof fell, no human tool could reach the side current without entering water. Vessa would be surrendering the only place from which her people might inspect, widen, or close the wound while breathing.

She slid her hand over the cracked housing as if memorizing it.

"This was here before my mother’s roost," she said. "It ends with me."

Jiang heard grief beneath the plain words and did not insult it with comfort.

Jiang looked at the black water below his bare breast.

Without warning, the anchor pulled harder.

Cairnspire’s exposed service throat split along the place Aylin and Vessa had lifted its cap. Their rescue opening became a mouth for cold spray. Vessa kicked the shell bar free before water touched Jiang’s cloth.

"Everyone off the lower skin," she shouted.

The broad feeding shell boomed beneath Irra’s pole.

Separate swimmers chose separate exits. The copper-backed animal dove beneath Ashwake. The narrow-finned swimmer entered open water with its rider flattened along one side. Another guild beast refused the dark lower cut and climbed a broken window instead.

Morrowfin held the broad entrance, keeping her injured wing tight against one flank.

White-armored divers rose beneath her.

She kept the wounded wing closed and rolled her back across their path. One diver released the stone and escaped beneath her tail. Another drove a short white blade along her dark hide.

Fire opened from shoulder to rump.

Morrowfin’s body convulsed, but she did not spend a pressure stroke. She turned her weight downward and crushed the diver against the broken road long enough for the last Cairnspire swimmer to clear.

The narrow-finned animal paused outside the danger mouth and looked back. A final strip still joined its rider’s wrist to the swimmer. She unwound and dropped it rather than turn the cloth into a rein. Only then did the swimmer leave Morrowfin’s shadow and enter open water.

Only then did Morrowfin release it.

The diver fell alive into dark water. Morrowfin backed from the opening with a white burn crossing her broad back and her old wing wound bleeding beside it.

No rein drew her away.

On Red Aeries, Valea saw the hook begin another pull.

"Now, while the ridge is clear," Valea said.

Hest could not send the word through worlds. He struck his bar into the remaining messenger strand, let the first impact travel, and dragged iron across stone before the second.

The old paired rhythm reached Jiang.

Clear the blade. Move the bar. Weight again.

Valea had room to cut.

Jiang caught the strand in his beak. "They are clear."

Aylin brought Valea’s off-center shaving to the root.

"We lose them when I do this," she said.

"We lose the cord between us."

"That is not what I said."

The distinction hurt enough that Jiang nearly asked her to wait for one more family call.

Red Aeries shook beneath the hook. The injured male cried out. His chick answered from under the female’s breast, alive and farther from the ridge.

Jiang closed his beak around the root.

"Cut the line now," Jiang said.

Aylin severed the last messenger strand.

Its Cairnspire end snapped into Jiang’s beak. The far end vanished through the slit toward Valea and Hest. Nothing living remained tethered to the shutter.

Aylin closed both wrapped hands around the cut end before current could take it. Valea’s off-center shaving stayed in her palm. Across the wound, Valea caught the retreating far root around her forearm while Hest kept his bar between it and the emperor family.

Vessa drove her shell bar into the final hinge.

She did not break the breath spine with her arms. Water, dead-star weight, and three weeks of enemy tension had already done that work. Her strike removed the piece still pretending to hold.

At last, the ancient hinge failed.

Old shutter shell dropped across the side current. Above it, the remaining breath-spine roof folded inward, carrying the torn service cap and dry seam into the flooded gap.

Black root leader caught beneath the falling hinge.

For one instant, the armada pull held Cairnspire, shutter shell, and living scar at Red Aeries on the same line.

At Red Aeries, Valea cut.

Her bent blade passed through the last living fiber around the hook tooth. Hest lifted the white shaft with his bar while the Bellwyrm pressed from the other side with one unburned forelimb.

The leader snapped at Cairnspire.

White fire ran backward along the severed black root. Divers in the lower water released too late and spun away from the recoil. One struck broken shell and continued moving. Another vanished below the settled star before Irra’s next warning reached the water.

Released force tore the hook sideways through the scar ridge. One hinged tooth came free. Another broke inside the living white layers and continued burning.

The main shaft vanished into the wound slit, pulled backward by the armada’s severed leader.

At Cairnspire, the dry breath spine disappeared under water and broken shell.

Cold flooded the service throat, the old shutter housing, and every place Jiang had crawled. Aylin and Vessa dragged his cloth higher before spray reached the unsealed belly.

The place that had carried his body, Aylin’s line, and the family’s first returning call filled to its broken roof. No dry pocket remained to rescue later.

The cracked lowest star settled again. This time no broad road collapsed with it. A narrow blue current found space between shutter fragments and kept moving toward Red Aeries.

It was barely wider than Jiang’s body.

No human shoulder could follow. No feeder cradle could enter. No dry seam remained above it.

Morrowfin surfaced outside the lower ruin. The white burn across her back smoked in cold air. She refused the shelf and stayed in open water, watching the place where the surviving diver had vanished.

Jiang listened for the family.

The female answered first. The chick followed with a small broken-beak sound. After a long absence, the injured male forced one rough breath through his call.

All three voices remained alive.

Valea and Hest had lost the messenger strand, but Hest struck his bar once through the scar. Ordinary iron reached Cairnspire as a faint uneven note.

Aylin touched the cut root to the shell when she heard it. The severed cord carried nothing now. Her hand stayed there until Hest’s note faded from stone.

Then white light answered from inside the wound.

The broken hook tooth still burned in Red Aeries tissue. Each pulse tightened the narrow current and told whatever waited beyond it that the wound had survived.

Aylin lifted the cloth at Jiang’s breast.

Most of his new feathers lay smooth. Along the Wake Scar, pale skin still showed between sparse dark barbs.

The only road to his family was water now.

His coat still leaked before water even touched it.
