Chapter 223: The Chick Bit the Armada’s Hook
The armada hook pulled, and the Red Aeries scar moved under the chick’s feet.
Its hinged teeth had closed around the doubled messenger cord. A black root leader ran behind the white shaft and disappeared into the wound, carrying force from some swimmer or machine neither Valea nor Hest could see.
White tissue stretched toward the slit.
Across the ledge, the messenger cord swept over the female emperor’s joined feet and tightened. She lifted one foot to free it without dropping her chick.
Beneath her breast, the chick escaped.
It pecked the root cord once. When that failed, it lunged farther and closed its small beak around the white hinge.
Fire flashed along the chick’s down.
Still, the chick screamed without releasing.
Its bite stopped one hinged tooth from opening fully. Instead, the hook turned and dragged the doubled cord across the female’s toes toward the chick’s throat.
Already injured, the male struck it with his breast.
White metal scraped along his old side wound. From flank to belly, the scar opened and darkened the feathers clinging around it. He shoved the chick backward with one foot and held himself between the hook and both smaller bodies.
Its mother caught the chick under her beak.
It had released the hinge. A pale burn crossed the edge of its mouth.
Again the chick tried to lunge. Its mother turned sideways and pressed it beneath her breast, smothering the next rush with living weight. Its small beak kept opening in protest until the burned edge touched feathers. Then the call became a thin hurt sound Jiang had never heard from it before.
At Cairnspire, every cry reached Jiang through line and broken stone without bringing a single clear picture.
He rose before breath caught up.
During the second week, dark feathers had opened across his back and flanks. Their short barbs caught the warming cloth when he moved. Beneath them, cold reached exposed skin through the belly seams and Wake Scar.
Jiang’s sound foot found the shelf. His straight leg slid uselessly behind him.
"Put me at the water," he said.
Aylin kept her hands off him and put her body between his cloth and the broken-star opening.
"You would enter bare at the breast."
"That is my chick, Aylin."
"Yes, and you are not sealed."
"Move out of my way."
"No. Try moving me first."
Jiang tried to step around her and collapsed onto the sound wing before completing one body length. His hip failed first. Hunger weakness followed, leaving his beak open against cloth while the family call broke beneath him.
Opened feathers along Jiang’s back made the body look closer to whole than it was. Aylin could see bare channels at his belly whenever he breathed. One splash through those seams would reach skin; a dive would hold cold water there until his failing leg stopped moving.
Aylin crouched without reaching for his feathers.
"If I let you fall into that water," she said, "you die before the current finds them."
"They may die while I stay dry."
"Then help from here. Hate me after."
Jiang imagined the short fall into blue water. He imagined the first clean stroke his body remembered and the cold entering everywhere the new coat did not exist. Wanting the dive did not make the second part less true.
He already hated the truth enough for both of them.
Frost locked the two near strands together around Cairnspire’s shell horns. Valea’s marked shaving lay beside them. Aylin picked it up between wrapped fingers.
"Tell me what you hear."
Jiang closed his eyes and listened.
Sharp and breathless, the chick’s call cut through the line. Its mother covered it with a low warning. Beneath both, the injured male tried to answer and stopped in a wet scrape.
Iron struck stone from the far side.
It could only be Hest.
One blow carried his weight into the scar. Slack followed for Valea’s blade. Then the bar struck again.
Their paired rhythm had crossed the old wound before. Now it entered through the frozen cord as a demand Jiang could feel under his breast.
Black-green glass repeated the blows evenly and from the wrong place. Hest’s real bar dragged after each strike because a living man had to lift it again. Jiang chose the imperfect rhythm.
"They are turning the hook," he said.
"Which strand still carries Valea?"
Both roots had frozen into one white braid. Jiang tested each shell horn with his beak. Hest’s bar shook the left strand. A smoother armada pull traveled through the right.
"Cut the strand on the right."
"If you are wrong, we take Valea’s line."
"I know what it costs."
Aylin set the off-center edge of Valea’s shaving against the frozen root.
"We are wrong together," she said.
Aylin drove the shaving through.
On Red Aeries, the right strand snapped out of the hook.
Its release spun the white shaft across the scar ledge. Hest caught the black root leader beneath his iron bar and dropped his whole weight onto it. Valea drove her bent blade through scar-grown fiber around the opposite tooth, cutting living material only where white metal had already torn it.
Neither action stopped the armada pull.
Together, they changed its direction.
Sideways now, the hook rotated toward a rounded white ridge instead of the emperor chick.
Mottle struck its lower hinge with her good wing. Ilex braced Mottle’s bad side against her own body and kicked the loose messenger strand clear with her sound foot.
With all four gripping limbs, the smallest escaped juvenile seized that strand. It climbed backward along the ledge, changing its frightened trill whenever the chorus leech repeated it.
Behind Valea, the foreign fish struck the shallow basin. Its call pulled the clear leech’s attention away from the chick for one breath, long enough for the juvenile to drag the loose root behind Hest’s bar.
Black-green glass in the scar began copying Hest’s blows.
Valea heard the false impacts and ignored them. Under her hand, the real iron bar bent at a different place each time.
Unable to use its burned mouth, the Bellwyrm lowered one forelimb over the white shaft and pressed until its wounded head shook.
Driven sideways, the hook entered the ridge.
White teeth punched through old scar layers and closed behind them. Across the ledge, the shaft stopped moving.
At last, the chick scrambled free.
So was the female’s trapped foot.
Only when both were behind him did the injured male stop standing. His breast touched stone. Blood moved through the grooves between his new feathers and gathered against the scar ridge.
Valea took one step toward him and stopped when the female opened her beak. No translation was needed. She slid folded cloth across the ledge instead. Its mother ignored it until the chick nudged the clean edge toward the male with its unburned side.
Only then did she draw the cloth beneath his wound with her beak.
She stayed beside the injured male.
She settled over the chick beside his body and gave one low call into the space Jiang always heard as unfinished. When the male tried to answer, his opened side wound shortened the sound to a rough breath.
Jiang heard that failure at Cairnspire.
His body pushed against the shelf again. This time he stopped himself before the hip gave way.
He gripped the remaining messenger strand beside the old beak split.
A single strand still crossed. Valea and Hest held its far loop. White teeth no longer held the chick, but they had entered the living scar too deeply to withdraw without tearing more tissue.
"Cut the last line," Aylin said.
Jiang felt the chick’s quick breaths through changing calls. He felt no people, names, or map. Only the cord moved between his beak and someone else’s hands.
Valea gave one deliberate pull.
Its meaning reached him: wait.
Hest’s bar followed with a slower pressure.
Jiang released the root from his beak.
"They need it," he said.
"The armada needs it too."
"Then we make them fight for the same strand."
Aylin looked at his open breast seams and the water beneath the broken star. "You cannot be the part in the middle."
"I am already between them."
Bravery would have been easier for Aylin to answer. What she heard was frightened, stubborn, and exactly like Jiang, which was worse.
At Red Aeries, the black leader behind the hook pulled again.
Deep in the scar, buried teeth held.
Across living tissue, white fire traveled outward from the rounded scar ridge. The Bellmother’s warm wall tightened around the shaft. Hest’s bar lifted under the new pressure. Valea’s blade tore free before it could be swallowed.
At Cairnspire, the remaining line drew hard against one shell horn.
That pull reached the cracked lowest star. Grit jumped from its buried edge. In the outer water, Morrowfin rolled away from a fresh stream of debris instead of letting it strike her wounded fold. Irra beat Ashwake’s feeding shell once, warning every swimmer away from the lower ruin.
Beneath the remaining line, the ruined shutter cracked.
What remained inside the wound was worse than a probe.
The armada held an anchor between worlds.
