Transformed into a Penguin: My Evolution Penguin System
Chapter 225: The Abyssal Emperor Entered the Water Between Worlds
A full month after Jiang chose the abyssal molt, his last old feather came loose because Aylin sneezed.
It had been clinging above his tail through three days of stubborn inspection. Her breath caught while she leaned over him, the feather lifted, and Vessa snatched it from the air before it could fall into the flooded service throat.
All three of them stared at it.
"That cannot be the official end," Jiang said.
Aylin wiped her nose against her shoulder because both palms were still wrapped. "Your body has shown worse judgment."
The laugh cost him. It caught under his breastbone and became a dry cough that left his beak open over the warming cloth.
He had never been so hungry.
The fast had taken the round strength from his neck and carved hollows above his legs. New black feathers hid much of the loss until he stood. Then his breast seemed too narrow for his head, and the straight leg shook before he had moved anywhere.
No new plumage had repaired the torn shoulder. It had not bent his leg, steadied his hip, cleared his breath, joined his beak, or restored the flesh burned from his tongue. Darkness covered the injuries better than the ragged old coat had. That was all.
Aylin waited for his breathing to settle before she removed the warming cloth.
The new coat lay close from crown to tail. His back had taken the deepest black. White curved beneath his jaw and down the breast, broken where the Wake Scar crossed the new field in a thin, uneven hollow.
Sparse dark barbs covered that hollow now. They did not hide it.
"We test the body we have," Aylin said. "Not the one either of us wanted."
Vessa had carried a shallow shell basin up from Ashwake. She set it on the scorched shelf, well away from the blue current moving through the collapsed shutter.
Jiang eyed the water inside it.
"If you throw that over me, I will bite you."
"I brought a spoon for this."
"Then I will bite you slowly."
Vessa crouched beside him. "That sounds like reserve loss."
Aylin almost smiled. Then she slid clean strips of pale cloth beneath Jiang’s belly, under both wing edges, and along the skin below the Wake Scar. Her care made the danger worse, not smaller. He could feel exactly where each strip waited to expose him.
Vessa lifted a little water in a chipped piece of shell.
The first drops struck his upper back.
They gathered on the feather tips, bright and separate, then rolled toward his flank when he shifted his weight. Aylin caught them before they reached the cloth.
More water followed across the opposite flank. Then the uninjured wing edge. Each bead stayed above the woven barbs and came away against Aylin’s dry wrap.
The torn shoulder was harder.
Jiang tried to settle that wing and pain pulled it away from his side. A gap opened beneath the new feathers.
"Test that shoulder again," he said.
"You will rest first," Aylin said.
"The water will not ask."
She looked at him for long enough that he regretted making the argument sound like hers.
Vessa lowered the shell. Aylin eased the injured wing into the position Jiang could hold without forcing the damaged joint. It was tighter against his body than the other one and gave him less room to steer, but the overlapping feathers met.
This time the water crossed without sinking.
Aylin drew out the cloth beneath it. Dry.
She replaced every strip before they tested his belly. Jiang lifted his breast as far as the straight leg allowed. Water touched the white field, found the direction of the new feathers, and ran away from the skin.
The cloth came out unchanged.
Only the Wake Scar remained.
Vessa offered the shell to Aylin. "You do this one."
"Why are you giving it to me?"
"Because he already promised to bite me."
Jiang did not laugh again. He watched the water tremble in Aylin’s wrapped hand.
She let one drop fall.
It stopped among the sparse barbs.
Cold pressed through them at once. Not wetness against skin, but the clean shape of it, close enough that his breast tightened around the old wound. Aylin reached for the drop.
"Wait. Let the drop settle," Jiang said.
The bead flattened. The feathers around the scar drew together under muscles he had never known how to use. It slid along the hollow, hung at the lower edge, and fell into Aylin’s waiting cloth.
She pulled the hidden strip free. It was dry.
Nobody celebrated after that first success.
A coat could turn away a spoonful and still fail in cold water. Aylin removed every test strip, searched them against the light, then pushed the basin toward a depression in the shelf. Vessa tipped water into it until a shallow dark pool formed with dry stone on every side.
Jiang stood at its edge.
His appetite had not returned. His legs were weak. The flooded road to Red Aeries moved below him with a sound like someone breathing through broken teeth.
His sound foot entered the pool first.
Cold closed around it. The straight leg followed badly, dragging its toes over stone. When water reached his lower belly, the Wake Scar flared so sharply that he struck his beak against Aylin’s shoulder.
She held him there without pretending she had not heard the sound he made.
"Get out of the water," she said.
"Not yet. I can hold."
"Your whole body is shaking."
"I was already shaking before this."
Vessa laid two fingers against the side of his neck. "That is true. Annoyingly."
They stayed through several slow breaths. Jiang felt cold gathering at the scar, but it did not spread beneath the coat. His toes kept their grip. His breath remained rough in the old way instead of shortening into something new.
Aylin made him step out before pride could become evidence.
She pressed fresh cloth along his belly and under each wing. Vessa checked the feather roots at his back. They found no wet patch. Then they wrapped him and waited while the shelf wind worried the loose ends.
Warmth returned first to his good foot, then to the straight one. The ache around the Wake Scar stayed deeper than the rest. Reduced did not mean absent. Permanent did not mean harmless.
Aylin kept one hand against his breast until the tremor eased.
"We should test it again," Jiang said.
"No. One wetting was enough."
"A single test could have been luck."
"A second could be vanity. You passed the water. Now pass the part where you listen."
He wanted to argue. Hunger had taken the energy required to make it convincing.
They waited until his skin was warm and his breathing had returned to its damaged rhythm. Only then did Aylin uncover him and repeat the dry-cloth inspection. Every strip remained pale.
The System appeared after the humans had finished deciding whether he lived.
[Abyssal Emperor Penguin I: transition complete.]
[Wake Scar: permanent. Insulation reduced.]
[Direct-Current Sensitivity: local connected water only. Pressure and flow; no sight, names, destination, or command.]
Nothing poured into Jiang’s body.
His shoulder remained torn. The bad hip throbbed. His stomach cramped around emptiness, and the scar stayed colder than every feathered place around it.
He was grateful for the honesty.
Below the shelf, a pulse of white light traveled through the narrow current.
Jiang felt nothing from it while he stood on dry stone.
Vessa tied no line to him. There was nowhere beyond the collapsed breath spine from which she could pull him back. Aylin brought the cut messenger root anyway and laid its dead end beside his feet with Valea’s marked shaving still caught in the braid.
"It cannot reach them," she said. "I know that."
Jiang touched the off-center metal with his beak. "It reached us once."
"That is also not a reason to carry it into a hole."
"No, the shaving stays with you."
He nudged the shaving toward her wrapped hand. "It is a reason for you to keep it."
Aylin closed her fingers around the proof from Red Aeries.
Jiang’s shoulders nearly filled the blue route. Aylin had measured it with her own body and stopped before the rubble could pin her arms. She could not follow. There was no sentence either of them could use to make that smaller.
At the edge, her forehead touched the uninjured side of his head.
"Do not make me crawl in after you," she said.
"Your shoulders would not fit."
"I am painfully aware of that."
"Then I have finally found a sensible defense."
Her breath warmed the feathers behind his eye. "Come back before I improve it."
Jiang lowered himself from the scorched shelf.
His good foot found the submerged shutter rim. The straight leg slipped, and his breast struck water before he was ready.
Cold seized the Wake Scar.
He folded the injured wing hard against his side. The other opened. His good foot drove; the straight leg trailed like a damaged rudder and pulled his hip sideways. For one ugly moment he moved in a circle beneath the ledge.
Aylin’s hand caught his tail without lifting him.
"Try the forward stroke again," she said.
Jiang drew one rough breath and drove from the good side more gently. His tail corrected what the leg could not. The open wing swept while the injured one gave only a narrow push.
This time, his body moved forward.
Water climbed over his back. The new feathers held it away from the skin. Cold still entered through the thin insulation at his scar, a blade laid flat rather than driven in.
Then the current touched enough of him to become something else.
No map opened inside his head.
Open water behind him pressed broad and restless against his tail. The flooded slit ahead drew a narrow stream past his breast. Inside that stream, the white fragment struck the water in hard repeating blows.
The tooth remained invisible. Jiang did not know how far away it waited. The pressure told him only that the hostile pulse lay somewhere along the same connected flow.
Beneath it came smaller disturbances: stone shedding grit, living tissue tightening around metal, and a faint uneven beat that might have been Hest’s bar or loose shell caught in the current.
No name arrived with any of them.
Farther ahead, beyond the white blows, a rough emperor call entered the water.
Jiang heard that with his ears.
The injured male called once. The female answered. A smaller broken-beak note pushed between them before both adults could finish.
His family remained beyond the enemy fragment.
Behind him waited open sea, Cairnspire, Vessa, Irra, Ashwake, and Aylin’s hand at the end of his tail. Ahead waited a wound between worlds that could close around his body and an armada that now knew it was alive.
Jiang turned his beak toward the narrow current.
Aylin released her hold on his tail.
The white fragment pulsed again, and the pressure reached him through the permanent scar.
He held the injured wing close, set his straight leg as best he could, and pushed into the flooded road’s narrow opening.
