Transformed into a Penguin: My Evolution Penguin System
Chapter 189: Jiang Heard His Human Voice Inside the Scar
Jiang’s human voice said Aylin’s name from inside the Bellmother.
"Aylin, wait," the thorn whispered.
Water blurred the words. It could not blur the throat that had made them.
Jiang remembered how that voice had felt inside his chest, lower when he woke, thin after running, too quick when he lied about being fine. He remembered owning lips instead of a beak and a tongue that could shape Aylin’s name without turning it into an emperor call.
For one breath, his current body became the thing between him and the sound.
The black-green thorn flexed under the scar.
"Aylin, wait," it said again.
Same breath. Same fear. Same mistake in the second word.
Aylin looked at the penguin beside her, not the glass.
She had heard that voice in Wake Court when a stolen-name vessel wore Jiang’s former mouth. Her hand moved toward him and stopped before touch became another decision made for his body.
"I heard it last time," she said. "It was not you then."
She did not call his old voice ugly. She did not claim the beak beside her was somehow more honest than the mouth he remembered. Either comfort would have made his loss easier for her to arrange. Aylin waited for Jiang to decide which body would answer.
Jiang could not answer in the stolen voice.
He struck her wrist once with his beak and turned toward the thorn.
That was enough to choose the next thing.
Copied brood calls had spread through every water-braced root. Notch-Fin and Throat-Scar changed faster, but the thorn kept adding old notes behind them. Broad Mouth rammed one channel wall whenever the echoes caught up. Fin-Tender curled around the injured juvenile in Tovar’s shell and refused to leave the refuge.
The foreign glass had more than one root in the wound.
Black-green threads ran beneath healed white ridges, too deep to follow by sight. Pulling the visible thorn could leave the rest inside. Cutting every dark line could tear Bellmother flesh that already held the district.
Jiang needed to know which pieces still moved.
He swam into a hollow between two scar ridges. His breast fit against warm tissue. Both feet found separate pockets, and his injured shoulder rested where the current could not catch it.
Jiang held himself still and waited.
The brood kept moving. The district groaned. Blood and nursery water crossed above him until his own wake faded beneath both.
`Pressure Wake` opened through the scar.
Bellmother movement struck first.
Her pulse rolled under Jiang as a heavy pressure without a direction he could name. Free juveniles threaded smaller wakes through it. Aylin’s fingers disturbed one ridge. Kesta’s hook scraped iron. Beras held a roof root while Neris and her adult bell worked the rescue lines farther back.
Among them, thin movements arrived late.
One shivered after Notch-Fin turned. Another tightened after Broad Mouth struck the wall. A third answered Aylin’s touch even though no black glass showed beneath her hand.
The ability did not call them thorns.
It did not tell Jiang whether they were alive, crafted, foreign, or dangerous. It gave him small wakes that copied larger ones after the water had already changed.
Pressure crowded behind his eyes. The Bellmother’s next pulse bent every thin movement together.
Jiang released the ability.
He left the hollow and marked three scar ridges with separate beak taps. Aylin put her fingers where he had struck. At the first, she felt nothing until Notch-Fin called; then the flesh twitched late. At the second, one dry bubble escaped. At the third, Beras cut away a pale surface fiber and exposed another black-green thread.
Ordinary evidence finished what the ability could not.
Jiang’s eyes still ached with movements he had not marked. There might have been more sleeping strands. There might have been none. He tapped only the ridges whose delayed wakes Aylin could confirm and left the rest unnamed. Pain did not make uncertainty disappear.
"Three living threads," Aylin said. "Maybe more that do not move."
Beras stared at the exposed glass.
Kesta saw recognition. "How long have you known these?"
"The Hook Choir found splinters in the oldest scar anchors," he said. "Before Kaul led us. Before I took a wing. They held calls after the animal left."
Beras rubbed the silver stitching at his shoulder. Black-green dust still darkened its oldest knots, sealed there from seasons of pressing stored calls into storm lines. One bell could rest while a dead note held the bridge rhythm. The city had called that mercy because the throat strained less, even as the cages filled below.
"So your guild built the cages from them."
"No." Beras pointed below the glass. A throat-tether hook lay sealed in a deeper white ridge, its iron worn smooth long before black-green residue reached it. "The cages were here. The cutting was here. We learned how to make one stolen call last longer."
Kesta’s face hardened. "You made an old cruelty easier."
"Yes," Beras said underwater.
Again, he gave them no lie to defeat.
The thorn spoke in Jiang’s voice behind him.
"Don’t cut me," it begged.
His old mouth would have rounded the last word. The thorn repeated exactly that remembered shape without knowing why Jiang had ever feared pain.
Aylin tore a strip from Neris’s loose awning and folded it into several dry layers. "We pull the center into this. The smaller threads come only when their ridges move."
"Bellmother moves with them," Kesta said.
"Then she will move when we take them."
Nobody called that acceptable. They used the time before it happened.
Behind them, Dema and Tovar closed the inner cradle around the injured pair. Neris moved surviving residents beneath a root arch with her adult bell on its chosen strap. Each person fixed one thing the coming convulsion could otherwise take; nobody gathered merely to watch Jiang confront his stolen voice.
Beras locked his frame around the district root. Kesta slid the brass hook under the visible thorn. Aylin held the folded sailcloth above the wound where an air pocket clung beneath a roof beam.
Jiang took the first thread in his beak.
It flexed like wet cartilage. He bit near the exposed end and pulled until the black-green strand slid through Bellmother tissue instead of cutting across it.
Notch-Fin changed its call.
The thread answered late and tightened around Jiang’s beak.
Throat-Scar bit the strand below him.
No one had invited the juvenile. Jiang stopped pulling long enough for it to choose its grip. Together they drew the thread free.
Kesta lifted the center thorn.
Fresh blood clouded the scar. Aylin caught the glass inside the folded awning without letting it touch open water. Beras tore the second moving thread from beneath the pale ridge. Broad Mouth struck the third from inside its root channel, exposing enough for Neris’s adult bell to seize with its tail.
The adult passed it to Neris. She cut the root around the glass, not the Bellmother flesh.
All three threads came free.
The copied chorus stopped in the middle of Jiang’s human voice.
For one beat, the wound water went still.
Then the Bellmother convulsed.
Her flank rose beneath the district. Roofs tore from the water brace. Tovar’s cradle slammed shut around Fin-Tender and the injured juvenile. Aylin lost the awning bundle, caught it by one corner, and struck the scar hard enough to reopen her shoulder.
Jiang was thrown along the white ridge.
Beras’s root frame held. Kesta’s hook did not.
She disappeared into the wound-side current as the Bellmother’s hide rolled beneath them.
Far below the scar, something opened.
A black eye wider than a Skykeel tower turned through the water and fixed on the severed nursery district.
