Chapter 188: The Second Cage Opened From Within

  • Next Chapter

The voice thorn found the second cage before they did.

Its dry answer traveled down the buried iron, entered the nursery roots, and came back beneath the wrecked district as a muffled chorus. Every note arrived late. Every pause belonged to a call that had already changed.

Something struck the underside of the deck.

Tovar turned so quickly that his cradle rolled against the scar ridge.

"Wet vault," Kesta translated. "There are brood below us."

During the collision, one nursery roof had punched through the floor. A gap opened between its beams, breathing cold bubbles into the street. Pale gripping limbs appeared behind a lattice of submerged roots and vanished when the thorn repeated its stale call.

Dema pulled on the rescue rope. "We take them out."

Beras looked across the surviving district. The roofs not pinned to the Bellmother had started sagging away from one another. "Open that vault and its water leaves with them. This section breaks."

"Leave them and the next roof crushes the cage," Kesta said.

No clean answer arrived before the floor split again.

The notch-finned juvenile made its own.

It crawled completely out of Tovar’s inner shell. Tovar tried to block the wound-side edge with one arm. The juvenile climbed over him, gripped the white scar ridge, and lowered itself into the deck gap.

Dema called after it.

It did not return to the person who had kept its cradle upright.

Tovar shut his eyes once, opened them, and fed out the inner-shell tether instead of dragging the animal back.

Dema stopped calling when she saw the line leave his hands. She wrapped the rescue rope around her wrist and gave the shell wyvern toy to Tovar. He tucked it beneath the empty padding where the juvenile had slept. Neither pretended that keeping a toy made the cradle occupied again.

Jiang followed through the broken floor.

Aylin fixed a line behind his legs without tightening it. He stepped free, then put the loose loop around one root with his beak. The line marked a way back without making her his leash.

Below the deck, the wet vault had become a tilted chamber of trapped water and roof debris. One wall belonged to the Bellmother’s white scar. Another had folded across a living-root cage.

Several juveniles moved inside.

One had a scar around its throat. Another kept a torn fin tucked against its body while a smaller broodmate held the injured edge between both gripping hands. A broad-mouthed juvenile struck the bars whenever the delayed thorn call reached them and stopped when the echo died.

Those wounds did not share an age. Pale ridges had already closed around the throat cut, while the torn fin still bled from the district collision. One injury belonged to the people who built the cage. Another belonged to the disaster now threatening everyone inside it.

Outside the bars, the notch-finned juvenile touched one root.

Its call changed before the echo arrived.

Inside, the throat-scarred juvenile answered high. The fin-tender answered low. The broad mouth made no sound at all; it shoved water through the lower roots with its tail.

Jiang waited for them to choose a pattern.

A roof beam buried the outside latch. He could reach it. Farther in, the cage’s living clasp occupied space his beak and feet would only block.

Jiang forced his stronger foot under the beam.

His shoulder failed on the first push. He changed sides, caught a splinter near his beak hinge, and rolled instead. The beam lifted far enough for the notch-finned juvenile to pull one root free.

Jiang let the wood settle behind it.

He had opened nothing.

Both sides began working.

Notch-Fin climbed the freed root and struck it with alternating hands. The throat-scarred juvenile matched one impact, then deliberately missed the next. Water moved through the gap. Broad Mouth drove its tail again, turning that movement into pressure against the clasp.

One breath later, the thorn repeated their first impacts.

None of the brood followed it.

Fin-Tender changed the spacing. The smallest animal inside pressed its whole body against the clasp while the injured juvenile bit a pale fiber and held.

Under their bodies, living root stretched.

At last, the cage door opened inward.

No hunter had touched its latch.

Broad Mouth came out first and struck Jiang in the breast hard enough to send him into the wall. It used his body as a turning surface, not a leader, then vanished into a water channel beneath the district.

Throat-Scar climbed toward Kesta’s hook. She opened her hand and let the brass tool hang loose rather than meeting teeth with metal. That juvenile passed her without touching it.

Fin-Tender did not leave.

Its injured broodmate could not swim against the draining vault. Fin-Tender wrapped all four limbs around it and stayed inside as water dropped below the upper roots.

Dema entered the gap beside Tovar. She could reach one of them, not both.

Neris went past her on the injured knee.

"Hold my frame," she told Beras.

He caught the back of her harness while Neris lowered herself headfirst into the cage. A gray adult bell crawled from beneath her folded wing and followed.

No cut ring marked its throat. Its gripping limbs found the same worn places on Neris’s frame without a command. Neris opened a belly strap only after the adult touched it, and the bell anchored itself there before reaching down with its tail.

"You ask before every launch?" Kesta said.

Neris kept her head inside the cage. "Every one."

"Who asked the brood?"

Neris’s adult bell tightened its grip on her frame. She looked at the old throat scar below and had no answer that water could improve.

Fin-Tender accepted that tail.

While Neris lifted, the injured juvenile bit through her glove. She kept lifting and did not call the bite permission, gratitude, or forgiveness.

Together they cleared the cage.

Water rushed out behind them.

Under the lost water, the loose district shuddered. One roof root tore free from the Bellmother’s flank. Beras opened a wing underwater, caught too much air, and slammed into the deck before Kesta could close the sail around him.

Beras had been right about the vault water.

None of the brood returned merely to prove him right.

Broad Mouth reappeared inside a lower root channel. The throat-scarred juvenile entered another. Notch-Fin dove beneath the collapsed roof and pushed water through a third route.

Their movements were neither equal nor timed. One current rose while another fell. Together, the shifting pressure filled the spaces the draining vault had left and slowed the district’s break.

Nobody ordered them into place.

Tovar kept the occupied cradle open as an air-and-water refuge. Dema guided the injured pair toward it. Neris’s adult bell remained on her frame by choice, breathing in the same uneven rhythm while she held the rescued juvenile away from her cutting hook.

Black-green glass answered every brood call it heard.

Its copied notes spread through the new water brace, farther than they had traveled before. Roof roots trembled with them. Empty cages sang. The Bellmother’s scar tightened around the old iron.

Then a different voice moved beneath her skin.

It did not repeat.

Pressure rose, broke around one white ridge, and changed again before reaching the next. Notch-Fin turned first. Broad Mouth stopped in the lower channel. Even the injured juvenile lifted its head from Dema’s arms.

One by one, the freed brood faced the scar.

Behind the old iron, something living was still changing its answer.
