Transformed into a Penguin: My Evolution Penguin System
Chapter 190: The Bellmother Chose What She Would Carry
The Bellmother looked at them and moved.
Her eye did not narrow with recognition. No thought crossed the black surface for Jiang to steal. The enormous lid opened farther, water rolled off its edge, and her whole flank turned beneath the nursery district.
Every surviving roof began sliding toward the scar.
"Kesta!" Beras shouted into the water.
No answer reached him.
Jiang saw brass below the old iron.
Kesta tumbled through the wound current with her hook strap wrapped around one wrist. A loose chain link had caught her damaged half-frame and dragged her toward the place where black-green threads had been.
Beras fixed Aylin’s rope to his chest spar.
Jiang took the other end and dove.
He reached Kesta before the next chain pull. His beak could not cut the frame clasp without taking her shoulder with it. Jiang struck the trapped link, then the loose half-sail, and pushed the rope into Kesta’s open hand.
She understood the part that belonged to her.
Kesta folded her body through the frame, kicked off the Bellmother’s scar, and caught the rope with both feet. Beras hauled while Jiang swam beside her. Nobody carried Kesta out of the wound. She climbed the last ridge on her brass hook and collapsed against Beras’s wing.
"You came back twice," she told him.
"The first one did not work."
The district rolled again before she could answer.
Aylin had kept the thorn bundle above open water by one torn awning corner. Her reopened shoulder could no longer lift it. Neris crawled across the roof arch on her injured knee, took the dry layers against her chest, and let her gray adult bell close two gripping limbs around the fold.
"If it speaks, drop the whole roof," Aylin said.
Neris looked at the isolated glass. "If it speaks, I drop myself with it."
"The roof is heavier. Use the roof."
Neris gave her a tired, bloody smile and tied the bundle beneath a dry root.
The Bellmother’s movement pulled the old chain deeper.
Fresh white tissue split around a barbed crosspiece hidden below the largest link. The district did not hang from the chain alone. That iron barb locked the chain behind the scar ridge, turning every roof and cradle into a hook through living flesh.
Aylin pointed at it. "That is what we cut."
Kesta pushed herself upright. "Not until the other hold takes weight."
This time they had something that had not existed during their first argument.
Freed brood moved through the district roots.
Notch-Fin changed direction whenever one channel compressed. Broad Mouth forced water through gaps where roofs had pulled apart. Throat-Scar stayed near the old chain, calling high when pressure rose and biting any pale fiber that closed across the route.
None held a fixed rhythm.
Neris’s adult bell answered only after touching her flight frame. Fin-Tender answered from Tovar’s inner shell, then broke its own note when the injured juvenile moved. The changing calls crossed without becoming one command.
Beras listened with his hands on the rootwork.
"They are showing where the load moves," he said.
He and Kesta had once built flight harnesses around changing wind. Now they worked the same way around water.
Beras cut his intact left sail from its upper frame.
Silver stitching drifted from the severed edge. That sail had carried him back to Kesta, held trapped riders, and given him one remaining claim to the open air beneath Skykeel. Once the last tie parted, his frame could balance and steer. It could no longer make him a whole flyer.
Kesta did not ask whether he could fly afterward. He handed her the spar, and she threaded it beneath a living district root. Neris’s awning supplied the second broad strip. Residents passed both around the outside of the Bellmother’s white ridge instead of through torn flesh.
Aylin carried the line across the scar. Jiang swam it under a roof root too low for a human shoulder. Tovar opened and closed the inner cradle flap, letting the injured pair’s changing water join the pressure brace without exposing them to blood.
The mother held one sling junction. Neris held another despite her knee. Beras used his remaining sail as a rudder rather than a wing.
The external sling tightened around healed white tissue.
For one breath, the district’s weight left the iron barb.
Aylin pressed both hands to the broad root strip. It held without cutting into the white ridge, but every brood movement changed its tension. "If their water brace breaks, this slides."
"If the barb stays, her next turn opens the wound again," Kesta said.
Neither argument defeated the other. Kesta put her hook behind the crosspiece anyway, accepting the fall she had demanded they prepare for. Aylin took Neris’s blade, accepting that the sling might be all they had built.
"Cut it now," Kesta said.
Aylin put both hands on Neris’s hook blade. Kesta slid her brass hook behind the crosspiece. Jiang braced against the outer link with his feet.
They pulled in different directions.
Old iron resisted. The barb had healed into the Bellmother through so many ridges that the newest flesh was not the strongest hold. Aylin cut along rust, not skin. Kesta twisted the crosspiece toward the gap it had first entered.
Jiang felt the link move beneath him.
He kicked once with his stronger leg.
The barbed keeper came free.
Chain shot out of the wound.
Kesta’s hook tore from her wrist. Aylin lost Neris’s blade. Jiang spun with the outer link until Beras’s remaining sail caught both chain and penguin against the sling.
Bellmother blood filled the water.
The district slipped off her flank.
Root-and-sail cloth stretched around the white ridge, but its purpose was spreading weight, not suspending a city forever. One junction parted in the mother’s hands. Roofs rolled toward open sky. Tovar’s cradle broke loose from the deck and hung only from Aylin’s plain rope.
No one had another anchor.
The Bellmother could have shed them with the next turn.
She turned the other way.
Her body rolled beneath the falling district. A long outer ridge rose under the broken roofs, caught the root sling, and carried the platform away from the open edge of the ceiling sea.
Jiang did not know whether she chose the brood calls, relief from the barb, the weight against her scar, or something no human and no penguin had noticed.
He knew only what her body did.
She kept the district.
Nobody cheered. Dema threw herself across Tovar’s hanging cradle until Aylin’s rope stopped snapping. Neris checked the dry thorn bundle before her own bleeding knee. Beras held his ruined frame against the sling and watched the last useful half of his old wing disappear beneath a root.
Being carried solved the next fall. It did not return a home, mend a body, clear a scar, or tell them where the Bellmother intended to swim.
Not as Skykeel had kept her.
The old iron now trailed free behind the nursery. No hook entered living flesh. Sails and roots lay across the healed ridge where the Bellmother could roll them off whenever she wished.
Her eye passed beneath Jiang.
It did not stop on him.
Notch-Fin called from the water brace. Throat-Scar answered. Broad Mouth struck one root channel and changed the pressure around the cradle. Neris’s adult bell joined after choosing its frame again.
The Bellmother opened her mouth somewhere beyond the district.
Her voice was not a sound.
The first edge struck Jiang through his feet and beak. It contained no word, picture, name, order, or welcome. His injured body flattened against the ridge before he understood that the wave had already passed him and was still moving outward.
Pressure crossed the ceiling sea in one living wave. It entered every freed juvenile, every willing adult bell, every surviving chain root, and every tower still hanging beneath distant Skykeel.
Far behind them, the whole city answered.
