Transformed into a Penguin: My Evolution Penguin System
Chapter 124: One Beak Brought Food Through the Gate
Black filament reached for the chick beneath the returning female’s beak.
Varn drove his knife into the latch.
Varn’s damaged edge caught stone instead of thread. Bronze snapped around the blade, wrenching his arm toward the feeding notch. Hest seized Varn’s coat before the opening could take his shoulder too.
"Leave the knife," Valea said.
"It is my last one."
"Then lose your arm with it."
Varn released the handle. The gate swallowed half the blade and stopped.
From the far side, the returning female struck the trapped steel. Food scent spilled through the beak-wide cup. Beneath her, black thread slid around the knife and continued inward.
Stone opened above her head.
Aylin threw herself against the visible catch. Kedra braced the shadowless one with her injured boot. The adult seam shuddered between their lanes, unable to choose either woman’s weight.
"It is using the chick call as a body," Valea said.
"Calls don’t have shoulders," Hest grunted.
"That has never stopped this road from building the wrong thing."
Jiang held the windward gap beside the male. His back had gone numb. The warm salt brick pressed his breast, but whatever heat remained in it was flowing into two adult bodies and the wet chick between them.
More of the male’s weight sagged over Jiang’s foot.
Across the notch, the female called.
Gredudande answered with the male’s stolen voice.
At the false answer, the returning bird froze. Her beak remained inside the cup, but her eye shifted away.
Beside Jiang, the real male raised his beak.
His first note broke. He swallowed and tried again, opening the doubled call low against the chick. The female turned back before he finished.
She answered with the ending she had used when the egg was still closed.
He did not accept it.
He tucked the chick deeper, gave a shorter call, and waited.
Her next answer changed around the wait.
Only then did the male raise his brood fold enough to expose the chick’s beak. He did not step toward the notch. He did not offer the small body. He gave the returning female a path no wider than food.
"That is permission," Pava said.
"It is a penguin call," Varn said through clenched teeth.
"And he moved after it. Watch the body."
Jiang watched. The male’s eye never left the female. His open brood fold was not trust offered to the room, and the narrow path beside the chick was not an invitation for human hands. He had answered one changing voice, then made one careful space for the beak attached to it.
Permission could be that exact.
Jiang wished more humans understood the idea.
With the male still watching, the female pushed deeper.
Black filament rode beneath her beak.
Valea caught the call bronze with both hands. "I can keep the small strand or close everything. I cannot do both and pull that thread."
"Keep the strand," Pava said.
Aylin looked at the seam bearing down on her shoulder. "We can still seal it."
Under the brood fold, the chick opened its beak.
Bending over it, the male tried to feed again, but nothing rose in his throat.
Aylin saw that too. "Keep the strand."
Jiang pulled his supporting foot from beneath the male’s wool.
When the male lurched, Pava pushed Jiang’s salt brick across the stone with two fingers and stopped outside his reach. He hooked it beside the first brick, wedged both under the windward fold, and recovered enough balance to keep the chick covered.
Then he pecked Jiang for leaving.
His blow found the crack in Jiang’s beak.
Pain flashed white through his head. He tasted blood.
"I believe that means hurry," Pava said.
Jiang agreed. Black filament had learned his old three-rest pattern. If he repeated it, the gate would finish before him.
He struck the outer catch once and shoved toward the drain.
His unreliable foot folded. Breast met stone. The reopened shoulder tore against its wrap, but the first tap had already traveled into the feeding bronze.
Black thread lifted from beneath the female’s beak.
Jiang hit the wall with the hard curve of his shoulder.
His second sound came from the body, not the beak.
Gredudande copied the tap and missed the impact.
"It turned," Valea said.
Abandoning the shortest path to the chick, the filament reached toward Jiang’s moving source.
He pushed again. Pava moved beside him with one hand under the loose shoulder cloth. She did not carry him. Each time his failed flipper scraped the floor, she kept the wrap from snagging and let his feet do the work.
Behind them, the returning female began to feed.
Her throat tightened. The beak inside the cup opened over the chick’s raised mouth, and warm sea food passed through the old turn in a dark, soft mouthful.
On the first reach, the chick missed. It struck the male’s breast and slid toward the edge of his foot.
Before it touched bronze, the male caught it with his beak and breast. He settled the small body back above his toes.
Food held at the notch while the female waited.
On the second reach, the chick found her.
Its throat moved. The first swallow barely showed beneath its wet neck. The next made its whole body strain against the male’s skin. Warm food smeared the edge of its beak, carrying salt, fish, and a sea that existed under two moons.
The male steadied the chick against one edge of his bill. He did not try to take the food, though his own body had been fasting long enough to tremble around every breath.
Across the stone, the female held her position. Her throat worked in small pulses, giving the chick time instead of forcing the mouthful through.
Jiang smelled enough fish to make his stomach knot. Hunger urged him toward the cup with a violence that embarrassed the human part of him.
He moved away from it.
This meal had crossed a world for a body smaller than his foot. He would not become another mouth in its path.
For one breath, no stolen call came. There was only the scrape of tiny claws against the male’s skin, the female’s beak held through impossible stone, and the male trying not to collapse around them.
Then Gredudande spoke in Bent-Toe’s voice.
Bent-Toe’s dead answer came from the adult seam.
At once, the filament snapped toward Jiang’s cracked beak.
He changed direction. Instead of reaching the drain, he turned back across the low path.
Pava almost fell over him. "A warning would be lovely."
Jiang struck the bronze with his good foot, then the stone with his beak. Blood spotted the second mark.
Two sounds. Two moving positions. No clean completion.
Black thread followed. Valea shifted the call strand above it. Kedra rolled her shadowless catch inward, and Aylin released enough weight for the adult seam to grind sideways.
Out of the feeding latch, the black thread dropped.
Her living beak remained.
"Now the drain," Valea said.
Jiang turned again. His foot failed completely on the push. He slid on his breast, failed flipper trapped beneath him. The working flipper slapped stone without enough reach to stop his face.
Pava caught the shoulder cloth.
His wrap tightened across the open wound, and Jiang cried out.
His own voice struck the hollow. Gredudande took it.
Before Jiang stopped sliding, the sound came back from the drain.
Not a full contact call. Not the two-part answer in his throat. Pain, raw and brief.
Good enough. Jiang drove his beak into the drain catch.
Pain split the beak crack farther.
Black filament lunged toward the copied cry beneath him. Varn’s half-swallowed knife tore free of the feeding latch and followed, dragged by the thread wrapped around its blade.
"That knife is mine," Varn said.
Hest caught him around the waist. "Not anymore."
Knife and filament crossed the drain lip together.
Jiang rolled clear. Varn kicked the catch. Nothing happened. Buried shell and cloth from the hatch jammed the joint.
"It won’t close," Varn said.
Kedra left her shadowless catch.
Above the feeding female, the adult seam opened. Aylin shouted Kedra’s name.
"Stay on your lane!"
"The drain is my lane now."
Kedra’s answer came through clenched teeth. Leaving the catch had put the weight of the adult seam across her injured wrist, yet she kept moving.
Aylin hauled on the slack waist tether. "Then take me with you."
"You hold the body road."
"And you come back."
Kedra looked at her across the two separate paths. Whatever answer she gave was lost beneath Bent-Toe’s dead call, but she wrapped the tether once around her good forearm before taking the final step.
Kedra ignored her. She crossed one step on the low no-shadow edge, seized the broken hook handle from Varn’s belt, and drove it into the clogged drain.
Pale shell crushed beneath the wood.
"Kedra, back!" Black thread coiled around her wrist.
Jiang pecked it. Cold burned through his beak crack where he caught the filament. He tore it from Kedra’s binding and held long enough for her to wrench the hook handle sideways.
Under the handle, the empty shell collapsed.
At last, the drain opened.
Varn stamped the knife through. Hest threw his weight onto the catch. Pava dragged Jiang by the shoulder cloth as Kedra kicked free.
Stone closed. Below it went the filament, Varn’s last knife, and the broken hook handle.
Kedra stumbled back to the shadowless lane. Aylin caught her through the slack waist tether without letting their bodies merge.
Above them, the broad seam struck closed.
At the feeding reach, the chick swallowed.
With the danger closing, the returning female gave the last of the mouthful and pulled back.
A crack ran through the oval bronze.
Cracked bronze narrowed around her beak.
From the brood rest, the male called.
She twisted, struck the far stone, and tore free before the bronze closed. One dark feather remained caught in the crack.
The female tried to enter again.
Her beak reached the oval and stopped against the new break. The old turn had shifted. She scraped once, then twice, but the notch would not admit her far enough to touch the chick.
The male answered each scrape with a call. He could see her eye through the slit. She could see the dark shelter of his brood fold. Stone kept the rest.
Pava crouched outside striking range and watched the chick swallow the final trace from its beak. Its throat moved. Its head lifted, failed, and settled against the male again.
"It ate," she said.
No one cheered. The meal had worked, and the only path for the next one had cracked in the same act.
Varn stared at the sealed drain. "For the record, that knife was excellent."
Hest flexed both wrapped hands. "We will carve its heroic name into your next one."
"With what carving tool?"
Hest looked at his empty belt. "A fair problem."
Pava reached toward the feeding cup, then stopped. The chick was still on the male’s feet. Food stained its small beak. Its head rested against his breast.
Although the male’s eyes had closed, his brood fold held.
Jiang lay beside the sealed drain. Blood ran from his beak onto stone. His foot would not take weight, and the shoulder wrap had become a wet rope under his feathers.
No frost rose. No warmth gathered. No easy answer came.
Across the hair-thin slit, the female called.
One of the male’s eyes opened, and he answered.
Gredudande replayed the call they had used before the feeding.
Across the slit, the female changed.
The male reshaped his reply around hers.
Their chick made a small sound between them.
Cracked bronze left the beak-sized notch too narrow for another feeding. The adult seam stayed closed. Varn’s knife, the hook handle, the empty shell, and the black filament were buried together.
Valea knelt beside the oval bronze. "It heard all three."
Bent-Toe’s dead answer rose through the sealed drain.
Beside it came the chick’s first call.
Above the feeding reach, a shoulder-shaped line began to open again.
