Chapter 125: Three Living Calls Buried the Dead One

  • Next Chapter

The shoulder-shaped seam opened around a body that did not exist.

Stone spread above the cracked feeding notch. First came room for a neck, then a chest, then two long hollows where arms might pass. Gredudande built each piece from a different stolen sound.

Bent-Toe’s dead answer held the left side.

On the right, the returning female’s first complete call held.

Through the center ran the chick’s cry.

Cold moonlight poured through the empty shape.

"No filament," Hest said.

Valea had both hands on the call bronze. "It does not need one. The road remembers where it went."

"Then make it forget."

"With our excellent tools?"

Varn stripped the empty knife sheath from his belt. "I have achieved the highest rank in the delvers’ guild. Man holding a strap."

"Use it well," Hest said.

Around them, the adult seam widened.

On opposite paths, Aylin and Kedra took one edge each. The slack tether between their waists passed across the opening. Aylin wound her end around a stone tooth. Kedra did the same on the shadowless side.

"If it pulls us together, cut it," Aylin said.

"With Varn’s excellent knife?"

"Use your teeth. Bite it."

Kedra smiled despite the pain. "There you are."

They leaned apart. Down the middle, the seam split, but each stolen call held its own side open.

Near the sealed drain, Jiang lay unable to rise. His foot would not hold him, his beak bled, and his failed flipper had folded beneath his breast. Pava tried to turn him away from the moonlight, but Jiang resisted her grip.

"You have contributed enough blood," she said.

Under the male’s sheltering breast, the chick called.

An older version answered from the broad road.

Jiang stopped resisting Pava and began moving toward the brood rest instead.

"That was not agreement."

He dragged himself on his breast.

Pava caught the loose shoulder wrap and moved with him. "I am revising my diagnosis. You are impossible in every body."

Jiang clicked his broken beak once.

"Do not make jokes with the fracture."

Watching him approach, the unnamed male kept his brood fold low. Both salt bricks lay beneath the windward wool, their stored warmth fading into stone. His head sagged, but his body still covered the chick.

Jiang stopped outside his reach.

From the bronze rest’s rim, the male called.

From the broad road came the call he had used before the hatch.

From beyond the slit, the returning female answered the living male.

Gredudande played her earlier answer over it.

Each response struck a different part of the stone.

Valea pointed with her chin. "The old call holds the shoulder. The new one only passes through."

"Can you make the road hold the living one?" Pava asked.

"Roads like finished shapes."

"Living things are inconvenient," Varn said.

"Only for the roads."

Jiang reached the brood rest.

He did not have a working foot to offer this time. He lowered his breast beside the male’s wool and waited.

First the male pecked his bloodied wrap.

Jiang stayed. Next he struck the floor with his beak.

Jiang remained outside the marked place.

After the next chick sound, the male shifted closer on his own. Their flank feathers touched over the windward fold, with the two salt bricks and the chick inside the shelter their bodies made.

Heat did not bloom. Jiang felt the male’s shivering enter him and his own return through the contact.

Gredudande played the chick’s first call again.

Changed by food and exhaustion, the living chick answered with a rougher sound.

Across the seam, the false torso faltered.

"Again," Valea said. Jiang rapped stone with the outer edge of his good foot.

Pain reached him from the other leg anyway. He shifted his breast before tapping a second time.

Both taps returned from one fixed shoulder.

Jiang moved the third to bare stone beneath the male’s wool.

Instead of the call Gredudande held, the male answered with a breast vibration.

One arm hollow collapsed.

Hest put both wrapped hands into it.

Stone closed over his wrists.

He grunted and held them apart. "I found the part that bites."

Varn looped the empty sheath around Hest’s forearms and the nearest bronze tooth. He pulled until leather cut into his palms.

"Strap is performing above rank," he said.

Pava took over the coat screen with one hand and braced Hest’s elbow with the other.

Aylin and Kedra leaned farther apart.

Their waist tether sawed across the false chest. Fibers snapped one at a time.

"It will break," Aylin said.

"Then we break it in the useful place."

Kedra rolled her injured wrist around the cloth. Blood darkened the binding. Aylin moved with her timing without stepping off the visible lane.

Under the tether’s pressure, the false torso narrowed.

Bent-Toe called from inside it.

Pale-Cheek answered beyond the Antarctic bar.

Bent-Toe’s recording gave the ending stolen before Pale-Cheek’s fear had changed.

White-Nape broke into the recording with a rough live answer.

Gredudande repeated White-Nape.

Pale-Cheek changed again.

On the Antarctic side, the body road lost its shoulder.

"It cannot keep up," Hest said.

"It does not have to," Valea answered. "It only needs one shape to finish."

The returning female set her beak against the cracked notch.

She could not feed through it now. She could still see the male and chick.

Her call began low.

Before the second part, the male answered.

Between their voices, the chick clicked.

Gredudande played all three older sounds at once.

For one breath, the hollow became a person-shaped opening.

Something black stood inside it.

No face formed. No hands emerged. Moonlight gathered around a depth that leaned toward Ninebell and the two rookeries at once.

Its left edge wore the angle of Bent-Toe’s stance. One hollow shoulder rose with the returning female’s old breath, while the narrow center opened and closed around the chick’s first cry.

Nothing about it resembled a whole living creature. That made the shape worse. Gredudande had assembled enough remembered parts to ask the road for a body, and the road did not care that the parts had never lived together.

The opening leaned farther into Ninebell.

Frost spread beneath it, black at the center and white along the edges. Where it touched Valea’s call bronze, the metal curled against her palms. She smelled burned wool from her gloves and did not let go.

Valea’s call bronze began tearing away from the small routes.

"If that comes through, we lose both slits," she said.

"Can you cut the large one?" Aylin asked.

"Not without taking the small ones unless someone gives me separate tension."

Jiang struck stone again.

Before answering, the male moved his breast.

White-Nape and Pale-Cheek changed around one another beyond Antarctica.

When the chick moved, the returning female shortened her call.

Three living exchanges pulled in different directions.

Valea’s hands shook on the bronze. "Now I can feel them."

She hooked one finger beneath the thin Antarctic strand and another beneath the cracked feeding reach. The broad strip remained across her palms.

"I need the body road slack."

Hest could not move with stone over his wrists.

Varn had no blade.

Pava looked at the fraying waist tether. "That cloth is holding Aylin and Kedra apart."

"It is also crossing the chest," Kedra said.

Aylin met her eyes.

Neither woman asked what the other remembered.

They pulled the tether tight.

Around the taut cloth, the false body gathered.

"On three?" Aylin asked.

"No. We are not counting."

Kedra bit through her end.

Sudden release threw both women backward, each on her own lane. Loose cloth whipped through the person-shaped opening and wrapped the broad call strip.

Varn seized it with both hands.

Hest tore one wrist free of stone, leaving cloth and skin behind, and caught the other end.

Pava dropped the coat screen long enough to put both hands on Hest’s back.

Together they pulled. Into Ninebell, the black shape leaned.

Jiang’s contact call rose in his throat.

One full answer might have given Valea the tension she needed. It also would have given Gredudande a living identity to hold after this moment ended.

White-Nape was still beyond the thin Antarctic light. Jiang could answer the old rookery now, after all the silence, and let one complete call say that he lived.

The want nearly broke him.

Then Bent-Toe’s stolen voice opened inside the false chest. Clean, complete, and unable to choose anything new.

Jiang understood what Gredudande wanted from him. Not noise. Not recognition. A finished version of Jiang that could be repeated after the living bird had changed.

He would not leave that weapon behind only to hear White-Nape answer once.

He kept his beak closed.

Instead, Jiang shoved his bleeding breast against the male.

Nothing held the male there.

He pressed back. Their two bodies tightened around the salt bricks and chick. No command passed between them. The warmth was ordinary, failing, and freely shared.

Inside their shelter, the chick called.

Across moonlit stone, the female reshaped her answer.

White-Nape changed. Pale-Cheek changed too.

Beside Jiang, the male answered.

Jiang moved his beak tap before the echo could settle.

Every living source refused the position Gredudande had saved.

Across Valea’s palms, the broad strip went slack.

"Pull!" Varn and Hest dragged the tether downward. Aylin stamped the visible catch. Kedra kicked the shadowless one. Pava held Hest upright. Valea ripped the broad strip away from the two thin routes.

At the chest, the false body folded.

Bent-Toe’s dead call continued from a throat that no longer had a road.

Jiang heard the old emperor’s perfect answer one final time inside Ninebell.

Then the tether, broad bronze, and black shape fell into the sealed drain.

Stone broke over them.

Silence took the dead call.

Antarctic light remained as a thin white bar.

Beside it, the feeding notch kept one cracked eye of moonlight.

No adult body crossed either opening.

Valea tore her hands from the bronze. Curled metal had burned through both gloves, leaving red crescents across her palms. The two small strands still ran between them, one salt-cold and one silver with the far moon.

Hest’s freed wrist bled through its wrap. Varn wound the surviving half of the empty sheath around it and pulled the knot tight with his teeth.

Aylin and Kedra, each on her own path, reached for the tether that was no longer there. Their hands stopped over empty stone.

Neither woman crossed the gap.

"We will need another rope," Aylin said.

Kedra tested her injured wrist. "One with fewer opinions."

The words were light. The space between them was not.

Hest fell onto his knees. Varn sat beside him, still holding half an empty sheath. Aylin and Kedra lay on separate stone with no tether between them.

Retrieving her coat, Pava spread it over the windward edge again.

Aylin’s voice broke through. "The chick?"

Pava watched the male’s brood fold move.

A small click answered her.

"Still here and breathing."

Across the cracked notch, the female lowered her beak to the caught feather. The male answered from Ninebell. They remained a wall apart.

She tried the notch once more. Cracked bronze stopped her before the old turn. The chick heard her scrape and lifted its head beneath the brood fold, but no beak could complete the reach.

The female settled against the far stone instead.

Jiang had helped preserve her voice and one line of sight. He had not reunited the family. Their first feeding might also be their last unless the damaged notch could be repaired without restoring the body road.

Victory left that wound open because closing it would have been easier.

Jiang could not feel his injured foot. His shoulder had soaked through every wrap. The warmth between his flank and the male had narrowed to a thin, stubborn line.

Only then did the System enter Jiang’s sight.

[HUDDLE PULSE I AVAILABLE]

[COST: JIANG PAYS HEAT FIRST]

Jiang looked toward the small body hidden under the male.

One use might have driven warmth through the huddle. The first heat would leave Jiang, and there was not enough in him to know where the cost would end.

He left the ability untouched.

Beside him, the male stayed because the chick was cold, not because the System had counted anything.

For a little while, ordinary contact was enough.

Then water moved beneath the sealed drain.

Valea raised her head.

A low gate opened somewhere below the stone, beyond sight. Green light rolled through moving water on the other side.

Something passed over it and blotted out the light.
